Vandalism of Ambedkar statues
Deliberate vandalism or desecration of B. R. Ambedkar statues has been happening in India till present day since late 1980 assertion by dalits.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Ambedkar statues are vandalized in different parts of India.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]
Motivation
B. R. Ambedkar is one of the revered civil rights leader in India[18][19] for dalits and is called messiah of dalits and oppressed.[20] As Ambedkar was critical of Hinduism and caste system, he is hated figure among caste system supporters[21][22] and orthodox Hindus.[23][24][25][26]
Response
Ambedkar were put in cages in order to protect them for vandalism in Tamil Nadu.[27][28] Dalits often protest vandalism of Ambedkar statues.[29][30][31][32] One of such protest led to 1997 Ramabai killings.[33] Vandalism of any statue of public figure in India is punishable offence under sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intending to outrage religious feelings of any class) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of IPC.[34]
