Army Medical College, Rawalpindi
Army Medical College, Abid Majeed Road, Rawalpindi, Pakistan is the premier medical training institute of the Pakistan Armed Forces and is a constituent medical institution of the National University of Sciences and Technology. It was established in 1977; the 1st course of 99 girls & boys was inducted on 26 March, now celebrated as the "Raising Day". Within years it became one of the most sought after medical colleges in Pakistan.[1]
History
Need for establishing Army Medical College was felt after many years of experience of commissioning the medical graduates of civil medical colleges of Pakistan into the armed forces, the majority of whom were either conscripted or joined the Army on emergency basis and did not stay permanently in the Army. This had resulted in a chronic shortage of doctors in the Pakistani Armed Forces and unbalanced career structure of regular cadre of medical officers of the Army Medical Corps (Pakistan).In 1976, the Government of Pakistan decided to establish the Army Medical College(AMC).The College, a completely residential institution, started imparting medical education to the selected Medical Cadets of the FIRST MBBS COURSE in 1977.The successful training lead to the graduation and award of MBBS Degree by the Quaid-i-AzamUniversity, Islamabad. The College is now affiliated, with the National University of Science & Technology (NUST). Bachelors of Dental Surgery (BDS) classes have also been started since 1998. Thus Army Medical College was established in 1977, by the Government of Pakistan to provide well-trained, competent, disciplined and confident medical officers who would long cherish their career in the Army Medical Corps.
The College, formerly a completely residential institute, started imparting medical education to the selected Medical Cadets of the first MBBS course in 1977. Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) classes commenced in 1998 and the first BDS course passed out in 2002.
Graduates from AMC are much sought after by many private hospitals and are offered pay/benefits that are usually reserved for very senior and experienced medical specialists.
Educational objectives and curriculum
The College offers an undergraduate Course in Medicine (MBBS) extend dover a period of five years and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course of four years duration. The curriculum conforms to the requirements of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. English is the medium of instruction. The College of Medical Sciences undertakes to train the selected young men and women in such qualities of character and professional skills as are necessary of a highly disciplined, professional, and dedicated health professionals. In order to achieve these goals, it has been considered appropriate to follow the curriculum proposed by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council with flexibility.

The College aims to produce a well disciplined, scientifically trained, broadly educated, community oriented physician/ dental surgeon acceptable in any part of the world and who: is motivated by a basic desire to serve Pakistan. Possesses the human qualities of devotion to duty, kindness, tolerance, patience and compassion. Possesses a wide knowledge of the social and economic conditions of Pakistan and the World at large. Academics
Army Medical College (AMC) has its curricula expanded over 5 years for Medicine (MBBS) and 4 years for Dentistry (BDS). The graduates are then required to go through internship for a period of one year to qualify for complete registration with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).

- Military Hospital Rawalpindi (MH) RAWALPINDI
The Military Hospital Rawalpindi, established in 1857, has 800 beds for in-patient treatment. The hospital consists of three medical units, departments of Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Gynecology and Obstetrics. The bed occupancy rate is about 95 percent. The General Medical Council of the UK recognizes the hospital for postgraduate training in various disciplines. The hospital looks after a variety of patients and the medical students of this College are imparted practical clinical training by the concerned specialists and the professors.
- THE COMBINED MILITARYHOSPITAL (CMH), RAWALPINDI
This 550 bedded hospital mainly looks after the surgical diseases and caters for all ranks.It has units of General surgery, Neurosurgery, ENT, facio-maxillary Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Trauma Centre. There is also a battle casualty/artificial limb section attached to the hospital. The General Medical Council of UK recognizes the hospital for Postgraduate training in different surgical fields. The medical students of Army Medical College are imparted clinical training by the concerned specialists and the professors.
- THE ARMED FORCES INSTITUTE OF CARDIOLOGY (AFIC), RAWALPINDI
In 1968, a cardiac centre started functioning in the Military Hospital Rawalpindi and in 1978 it was accorded the status of a self-accounting unit and was designated as the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology. The institute has an impressive five-storey building and is equipped with state of the art sophisticated facilities in the field of Heart diseases. It has the capacity of 250 beds. This institute provides specialized cardiology cover not only to the Armed Forces personnel but also to the entitled civilians and the poor non-entitled civilians. Coronary by-pass operations are carried out here. The average bed occupancy rate is 95% and average daily OPD attendance is about 300. The medical students of Army Medical College are imparted clinical training by the concerned specialists and the professors.
- ARMED FORCES INSTITUTE OF PATHOLOGY (AFIP), RAWALPINDI
This unit, functioning as Command Laboratory of Northern India at the time of independence, was re-designated as the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology on 20th August 1957. A new building was constructed to house the expanded institute in 1961. The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology has been assigned the mission to serve as central reference laboratory and to provide diagnostic facilities in Histopathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Hematology to all the three services. It prepares and supplies diagnostic reagents and biological products. It also imparts training to the medical officers and laboratory technicians of the Armed Forces. It carries out research in various projects approved by the Armed Forces Medical Research Council and the Pakistan Medical Research Council. The laboratory has evolved into a center of excellence in the field of Pathology in Pakistan and has earned an international repute and standing.
- ARMED FORCES INSTITUTE OF TRANSFUSION (AFIT), RAWALPINDI
A field transfusion team raised in Poona in 1947 formed the nucleus of the Army Transfusion Centre, which was established on 10th April 1948. The unit was re-designated as the Armed Forces Institute of Transfusion in 1966. The AFIT serves as a central Transfusion Laboratory for the Armed Forces. It provides blood to the local Military Hospitals. It has facilities to manufacture infusion fluids of all types, anticoagulant bottles for storing blood samples for grouping, sera and dried plasma. The training of the medical officers, students and paramedical staff in blood banking techniques is carried out in this unit. Research facilities in the field of blood and serology are available.
- ARMED FORCES INSTITUTE OF DENTISTRY (AFID), RAWALPINDI
The Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry is located in an impressive building and is equipped with the most modern dental equipment. Its capabilities have been enhanced to undertake all types of treatment modalities. This institute is the nucleus of clinical training in dentistry for the BDS students of Army Medical College. It uses the modern instructional methods such as closed circuit TV for training of the students.
ARMED FORCES INSTITUTE OF REHABILITATION MEDICINE (AFIRM)
The Institute was established in June 1982 .It has hundred beds for the disabled persons. The aim of AFIRM is to rehabilitate handicapped persons of Armed Forces and their families to regain physical, social and mental capabilities. Special care is offered to disabled persons having musculoskeletal ailments, neurological disorders, amputees, deaf, mute and blind children by various measures like Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy.

Categories of students (Cadets)
Each students at the Army Medical College have their roll numbers and get allotted Companies (Hostels). A two to four letter prefix to the roll number indicates the category of the cadet.

Admissions are announced once in a year. The candidate’s meets the following criteria are eligible to apply in AM College, Rwp. BASIC ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA The following conditions govern the eligibility of the candidates for admission in the MBBS and BDS Courses in the Army Medical College:- Nationality: The candidate, except for the Foreign Students, must be a citizen of Pakistan including AJK. Marital Status: Unmarried Age Limit: Between 16-1/2 years to 21-1/2 years on the date fixed by GHQ for admission in the 1st year of the MBBS/BDS course. Minimum Educational Qualifications: F.Sc (Pre-Medical) with 70% marks except residents of Balochistan, Sind, NA, AJK & FATA who can apply with 65% marks. GCE '0' level with five subjects (English as compulsory), additional 'A' level with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with minimum C/6 grades. EQUIVALENCE: The candidates educated from the foreign schools/universities must get an equivalence certificate from the Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC), Ministry of Education Pakistan before applying to General Headquarters. Candidates applying without equivalent marks/certificate from the competent authority will not be considered for admission. Physical Standard: The candidate must be physically fit in all respects for service in any part of the world and must conform to the minimum laid down physical and medical standard of the Army. Selection Procedure of Paying Medical/Dental Cadets
The paying cadet (PC) scheme has been introduced to offer benefit to the wards of Army Forces personnel. Application form for paying cadets should be submitted on the specified dates. Prescribed application form may be obtained from Welfare and Rehabilitation Directorate (WR-4) AG'S Branch General Headquarters, Rawalpindi. (There will be no advertisement of the scheme in the newspapers). The candidates for PCs must have applied in open merit in the Civil Medical Colleges of the Province of domicile. Failure to abide by this instruction will render candidate ineligible for consideration as paying cadet. Selection in Civil Medical College will make the candidate ineligible for admission as a paying cadet. Concealing Information: In case any information about selection on open merit in any civil medical college is concealed and it is revealed later at any stage it will make the candidate liable to necessary disciplinary action/withdrawal from the college.
Selection Procedure of NUSTMedical /Dental Cadets
The Army medical College is one of 10 constituent colleges / institutes of the National University of Science & Technology. To extend the facilities of this centre of excellence to the civil sector, partly on the basis of self-financing, the NUST cadets have been introduced. The University conducts a separate examination for admission into this College for such cadets. Application form for NUST cadets, complete in all respects should be submitted to the National University of Science & Technology, Sector H-12 Islamabad on the dates advertised separately by the University in the national press. The candidate must be willing to follow the rules and regulations of Pakistan Army/ College and will wear uniform and mufti as applicable to Pakistani cadets. Selection Procedure of Foreign Students (FS)
Some seats are offered to friendly foreign countries through the Government of Pakistan. All Foreign Students are inducted through the NUST. (All applications /inquiries regarding admission in the cadre of foreign students may please be routed through the respective embassies/consulates of their country in Pakistan). A candidate desirous in this category must have an Educational Qualification of F.Sc (Pre-medical) or equivalent as recognized by University Grants Commission. He / she is also required to be proficient in written and spoken English, be between 17-21 years of age, be medically fit to undergo the rigorous college studies. The candidate must be willing to follow the rules and regulations of Pakistan Army/ College and will wear uniform and mufti as applicable to Pakistani cadets. The competent authority determines tuition fee and other administration charges from time to time.
Hostels
The first 8 batches - male cadets occupied the barracks across the main college building, while female cadets were housed near CMH Rawalpindi.
Presently, residential arrangements for medical students and cadets are divided into 7 hostels or Companies. Male cadets are allotted one of five companies ie Qasim, Razi, Sina, Ayub and Luqman. Lady cadets get Ayesha and Fatima companies.[2]
Ayub company has the distinction of being the only company to be named after a contemporary personality, in honour of the first Principal; Lt Gen (Late) Ayub Khan.
Sina company has the honor of being declared as the champion company for the maximum number of times, based on the combined result of sports, academic results and other extra-curricular activities. There are 7 separate hostels for male and female cadets near the college campus. A single cubical (11 ft X 11 ft) is usually allotted to a cadet. The Medical Cadets/ Medical Dental Cadets are provided the free furnished accommodation and messing facilities: there stay in the college hostel is compulsory. In the hostel, cadets have to observe the rules and regulation laid for purpose by the college authorities. Rooms once allotted to the cadets in the company hostels will not be changed without specific sanction. Visiting hours are strictly observed. In case of female cadets, only those visitors are allowed whose names have been notified to the college authorities by the parents/guardians. The paying cadets PC, if provided with the accommodation, are required to for it and food.
Computer centre
1.Commensurate to the present era of computer technology and the Internet services, separate well equipped computer labs are available both for Post Graduates students and for undergraduate students. Local area network is installed and all computers installed in the college areas, high performance servers are handling the e-services over college LAN. High-speed Internet services are available both in computer Labs and all in the offices computer. Moreover centrally printing, scanning and CD writing facilities are also available for students. Presently the Internet services are available in college teaching areas but in near future it will be extended in the living area of students. 2. Computer Repair Facility (CRF) is available in the College. Its trained staff ensures that all PCs, printers, scanners, UPSs, and LAN equipment remains in proper working conditions so that efficient and effective computing facilities are provided to the students and faculty members during and after working hours. CRF staff not only repairs all networking equipment, computers and allied accessories but also helps faculty members/ students in resolving minor problems of their personal computers. 3. Our Internet Usage Policy is simple. The Internet facilities provided by the college to its students and staff is solely intended for academic purposes. Internet facilities are planned and installed to enhance the academic quality of the educational, research and administrative work in the college. Any other use will be treated as "personal use" and the traffic/storage/processing capacity used for personal needs should be limited to "reasonable" quantities.
Cafeteria
Cafeteria situated within the premises of college provides snacks/refreshments on payment to cadets. Separate serving arrangements for male and female cadets are available. Separate cafeteria is also provided in the cadet hostels as well. COLLEGE MOSQUE The College mosque is situated in the vicinity of the college campus near hostels and has got the services of a full time Khateeb for offering prayers. (For the Christian students a number of different churches exist in the vicinity of the College as well as at Islamabad). Medical care
Medical care is provided to medical/dental cadets free of charge throughout all academic years. The college Medical Inspection Room (Ml Room) is looked after by a male and a female medical officer and trained paramedical staff. Cases requiring admission and consultation of specialists are referred to Military Hospitals. Sick leave up to 30 daysmay be granted on the recommendation of Medical Boards of Military hospitals. The NUST cadets get their treatment through medical insurance scheme offered by the NUST.
Vacations
Annual vacations in the college are restricted to 60 days as under:-• Summer vacations (July/August) 30 days Winter vacations (December /January) 10 days Eid Holidays 20 days (10 days for each Eid ) Casual leave to cadets is not encouraged but is restricted to extreme emergencies only after prior sanction from the college authorities.
Co-curricular activities
The months of winter are much awaited at the college campus because the sports as well as colorful stage activities are arranged during this period. These activities provide welcome relief from the tiring and cumbersome routine of the academic life. Inter company competitions are held for prizes and trophies.
- SPORTS COMPETITIONS
College sports committee plans, organizes and conducts competitions for Athletics,Cricket,Hockey, Football, basketball, Table tennis, Squash and body building. Sufficient indoor facilities exist in the college campus to carry out these sports activities on regular basis. Recently Swimming Pool has been constructed to add charm to the college life.
- CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
To inculcate leadership qualities among the cadets, ample opportunities exist to exhibit their talents in Qir'at, Debates, Quiz, Drama, Photography and Paintings. The respective societies organize colorful events in the college annual functions. The cadet speakers actively participate in all Pakistan speech competitions held at other institutions like Government College Lahore, PMA, Kakul and PAF Academy Risalpur. THE COLLEGE MAGAZINE College magazine 'AMCOL" represents literary interests of the cadets and is published biennially.
