Army Medical College, Abid Majeed Road, Rawalpindi, Pakistan is the medical training institute of the Pakistan Armed Forces and is a unit of the National University of Science and Technology. It was established in 1977; the 1st course of 99 girls & boys was inducted on 26 March, now celebrated as the "Raising Day". Within years it became one of the most sought after medical colleges in Pakistan.[1]

History

Need for establishing Army Medical College was felt after many years of experience of commissioning the medical graduates of civil medical colleges of Pakistan into the armed forces, the majority of whom were either conscripted or joined the Army on emergency basis and did not stay permanently in the Army. This had resulted in a chronic shortage of doctors in the Armed Forces of Pakistan and unbalanced career structure of regular cadre of medical officers of the Army Medical Corps (Pakistan). Thus Army Medical College was established in 1977, by the Government of Pakistan to provide well-trained, competent, disciplined and confident medical officers who would long cherish their career in the Army Medical Corps.

Founder principal of the college, Lt Gen (Retd) Ayub Khan, affectionately called "Baba" by all Amcolians (graduates of Army Medical College), took the tough challenge of getting the institution recognized against all odds. He not only succeeded in doing so on national level but soon the college was recognized for its excellent academic records the world over.

The College, formerly a completely residential institute, started imparting medical education to the selected Medical Cadets of the first MBBS course in 1977. Successful training lead to the graduation and award of MBBS Degree by the Quaid-i-Azam University. Since 1998, the College has been affiliated with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST).

Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) classes commenced in 1998 and the first BDS course passed out in 2002.

Hostels

For the first 8 batches, male cadets occupied the barracks across the main college building, while female cadets were housed near CMH Rawalpindi.

Presently, residential arrangements for medical students and cadets are divided into 7 hostels or Companies. Male cadets are allotted one of five companies ie Qasim, Razi, Sina, Ayub and Luqman. Females are divided between the newly built Ayesha and Fatima companies.[2]

Ayub company has the distinction of being the only company to be named after a contemporary personality, in honour of the first Principal; Lt Gen (Late) Ayub Khan.

Amcolians, and the College

Cadets and graduates of Army Medical College are referred to as Amcolians.

Within the Amcolian community, Army Medical College is simply, and endearingly, referred to as the 'College'. Hence the query, "Are you from the College"? (asking a doctor if he is a graduate of Army Medical College). While this colloquial reference is not intended to be prejudicial to graduates of other medical colleges, some non-amcolian doctors have been known to take offense to the term.

Alumini Association

Amcolians Alumini Association is essentially an academic and a research body constituted for the graduates of Army Medical College under the patronage of Principal of the College with the President of Pakistan as its Patron in Chief. This body has been formed with the full support and endorsement of the good offices of Pakistan Army. This is to put Pakistan and Armed Forces on the international map in the field of health, medical education and research.

Amcolians@Net

Amcolians@Net is a two part unofficial resource for graduates of Army Medical College. The first part is the website, which provides general information about the institution. It also hosts a password protected database of members. The second part of the resource is an exclusive mailing list, in which emails are sent to all members.

Membership is free, and web hosting and mailing list expenses are borne by volunteers. The only requirement for membership is to be a graduate of Army Medical College.

Amcolians@Net was founded by Dr. Muhammad Babar Khan (8th MBBS) and grew rapidly into a thriving meeting point for all Amcolians. While Dr. Babar Khan remains the webmaster and retains overall responsibility for Amcolians@Net, the mailing list is moderated by Dr. Farrukh Kazmi (6th MBBS).

The mailing list boasts more than a thousand members and is continuously growing, and as such is an unparalleled forum of medical graduates in Pakistan.
