Siberia is a region in northeastern Asia, extending from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, bounded on the north by the Arctic Ocean and on the south by Mongolia and China.

Siberia is roughly three-quarters of the total area of Russia. Much of it is swampland poorly suited to agriculture, the northernmost parts are extremely cold.

Siberia was used as a penal colony as early as the 17th century.
