Japanese figure skater Kagiyama Yuma was born on 5 May, 2003, in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. His father, Masakazu, is a two-time Olympic figure skater at Albertville 1992 and Lillehammer 1994 and is Yuma’s coach. Yuma began skating when he was three and entered his first competition at the age of five.
Kagiyama caught his first major break in November 2019 at the junior Japanese nationals, which he won as a 16-year-old. That earned him a seed at the senior nationals the following December where he, in his debut at the competition, finished third behind two-time Olympic champion Hanyu Yuzuru and PyeongChang 2018 silver medallist Uno Shoma.
In January 2020, Kagiyama competed at the Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lausanne, Switzerland. In the short program, not accustomed to an undersized rink, he skated into the wall and placed third, but bounced back in the free skate to win gold.
A month later in Seoul, Kagiyama finished third at the Four Continents Championships, again sharing the podium with the winner, Hanyu. Kagiyama closed out a successful 2019-20 season by netting silver at the junior worlds in Tallinn, Estonia.
