Although only taking up sprinting in 1896, Jimmy Tremeer was an AAA finalist the following year and from 1897-1906 was a finalist in the 100y, 220y or 440y at the AAAs 10 times; his best performances came in the 220y in which he was second for three successive years (1902-04). In 1906 he equaled the world record of 10.8 for 100m and, on switching to the 400 hurdles, set a new British best for this event at the 1908 Olympic Games. As a 33-year-old, Tremeer placed third in the Olympic final. He was also one of the pioneers of javelin throwing in England. He continued as an active athlete until 1939 when, at the age of 64, he retired from the hardware business and joined the Forestry Commission. He served as President of London AC (1931-32) and was closely involved with the Veterans’ AC.
