Nurturing People and Talent
We have been committed to nurturing talent and creating the scientists and entrepreneurs of tomorrow since the Park’s inception. A spectrum of support is currently available, from internships and apprenticeships to doctoral training programmes.
One of the most prominent and long-standing programmes on the Park is the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). This is a high-profile PhD programme which involves 5 of our Park Partners; the John Innes Centre, Earlham Institute, Quadram Institute, The Sainsbury Laboratory and UEA.
The programme provides students with the opportunity to pursue multidisciplinary research, encompassing a wide range of topics from atomic level structural studies through to computational and system biology and large-scale crop field trials.
In recent years there has been an increasing recognition that we also need to nurture talent outside of traditional research fields. A range of skills are needed for businesses and research organisations to succeed from project management and marketing to law, statistical analysis and licensing.
Research institutes and businesses on the Park offer a wide range of training opportunities. This includes regular short courses to students, staff and the public. The content varies from year-to-year but current topics include python, R, machine learning and GitHub.

Research institutes and businesses now offer a wide range of apprenticeships, internship placements and mentoring schemes each year.
The Earlham Institute and John Innes Centre, for example, participate in the Nuffield Research Placement scheme which is open to students in their first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) course. It takes place over 4-6 weeks and involves attendees tackling real challenges set by the organisations’ scientists. All students are from low-income backgrounds or are the first in their family intending to study at university.
Both the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) and UEA also provide a wide range of apprenticeships. NNUH currently offer non-clinical (e.g. business administration, accountancy and marketing) and clinical opportunities (e.g. pathology support, pharmacy and nursing).
