Baltic Market 'beyond delighted' to open new venue
The team behind Liverpool's Baltic Market are preparing for a new venture
A new food hall hoping to become the best in the UK is preparing to open. The food and drink destination named St Paul's Market is a joint venture with Liverpool's Baltic Market, Independent Birmingham, and street food restaurant Buddha Belly.
Baltic Market opened in June 2017 by the founders of Independent Liverpool - Independent Birmingham's regional sister site. The venue has enjoyed great success, having previously been named as one of the best food markets in the UK.
The upcoming St Paul's Market occupies a 10,000 square foot warehouse on Birmingham's Mary Anne Street, just off Saint Paul’s Square in the Jewellery Quarter. The team has signed a 15 year lease, with the opening more than 11 years in the making.
The food hall wants to champion the city's independent food and drink scene through top chefs, six kitchens and two bars at launch. The 500 person space is set over two floors and hopes to create "the best food hall in the UK".
Liverpool's Baltic Market announced the new venture online, saying: "We're opening a new food hall!!" St Paul's Market revealed more information via Independent Birmingham's Instagram page.
The statement reads: "After years of working hard to make this happen, we’re beyond delighted to announce that we’ll be opening a huge brand new food hall this Summer in the beautiful Jewellery Quarter.
"Teaming up with our good friends from @balticmarket and the legendary @saibuddhabelly, we’ve taken a 15-year lease on this truly stunning 10,000sqft warehouse on Mary Ann Street (just off Saint Paul’s Square in the JQ) and plan to make it one of the very best food halls in the UK and a shining beacon of Brum’s independent scene.
"We’ve spent the last 11 years championing Birmingham’s vibrant independent scene and encouraging countless thousands of people to support local through our social media pages and newsletter, our IB App, and our hugely popular food festivals - creating an essential platform that has helped our independent scene to flourish. And now this is the next stage in our journey to celebrate Brum and showcase our city’s incredible indie scene.
The statement continued: "We plan to be a traditional chef-led food hall - created with love by Brum’s very best indie restaurants and the city’s top up-and-coming chefs (with the hope being that Saint Paul’s Market will act as an incubator/stepping stone for the city’s brightest culinary talents, resulting in more exciting new openings in the future).
"The food hall will feature 6 indie kitchens alongside 2 bars (serving locally brewed craft beers, amazing cocktails, wines, spirits, non-alcoholic cocktails and more) with 500 seats over 2 floors.
"We want to create the best food hall in the UK - and we can’t wait to share our plans with you over the coming months. We really appreciate your amazing support over the years and we hope you’re as excited as us for this incredible new project - we can’t wait to make our dreams a reality. Viva Brum!" An opening date is yet to be confirmed.
