| Description | Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician and NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel in space when she served as an astronaut aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. After graduating with a degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University and a medical degree from Cornell University, she served in the Peace Corps from 1983 until 1985. Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987 and orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12–20, 1992, serving as a mission specialist on the STS-47 mission. In 1993, she resigned from NASA and founded a technology research company and later formed a non-profit educational foundation for children. She has appeared on television several times, including in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Jemison holds nine honorary doctorates in science, engineering, letters, and the humanities.
