I don't think I expected much from this when I picked it up years ago. I know I bought it because I recognized the name from the band (they took their name from the title of this book).
Anyway, glad I bought it (and glad I paid $8 for my first print which is apparently worth a lot more). It's hilarious. It's from 1966 and while it has aged as far as PC culture goes, it was probably offensive to different people when it was first published. This is what I expected Hunter Thompson's "The Rum show more Diaries" to be - hilarious, dark, subversive, thought-provoking. Manus can turn a phrase and while Mott is the main character, other characters in the periphery are developed enough that you get a sense of them and each adds to the story.
I teetered between a 4 and 4 1/2 star...I think I'd give it a solid 4 1/4 stars. show less
