I originally saw this movie because of western actors Russell Haden and Quinn 'Big Boy" Williams but Richard Arlen provided the solid acting it needed. Jean Parker played a good role as the love interest between Arlen and Hayden. It starts with FIxit (Williams) taking Houston (Arlen) in after being punched out of a rail car. Fixit not only gives him room and board, introduces him to his beautiful sister Mary (Jean Parker), he gets Houston on a Minesweeper and in WW ll that's dangerous business. Arlen plays the various dynamics well. He's vying for the love of Mary with Elliot, being a solid friend of Fixit and has a big secret he must hide from the Navy.
New York Times ran with Walter Duranty's fake story at the same time they were supporting Hitler in Germany (See Bonhoeffer 2024). Gareth Jones fighting for the truth fought against the same narrative generating propaganda that we have today with all mainstream media. Major journalists and big media regurgitate and support whatever their financing tyrannical masters tell them. Thus, the Holodomor which murdered millions continued and they were very willing accomplices. A story that couldn't be told in Hollywood as they romanticize all the blood thirsty despots in history. Thanks to the Polish production and English actors who made this possible.
I didn't know much about Bonhoeffer until I read William Federer's outstanding book, "Silence Equals Consent". He portrays Bonhoeffer as the model and essence of what a Christian should and must be. We don't need religion we need Jesus Christ. I had very high expectations for the movie and Angel Studios went above and beyond. The flashback effects were done extremely well. The acting and direction was superb. The high tension scenes with the Nazis were contrasted very well with the lighter scenes when Bonhoeffer was in New York, especially in the jazz club. This was a Clarion Call from Nuremberg to learn from history so we don't repeat it. .
