Too all of the slasher film nerds who enjoy Scream or You're Next, Netflix's October 30 release Time Cut, directed by Hannah MacPherson, adds in the sci-fi element of time travel to the formula. The main cast features Madison Bailey, who plays Lucy; Antonia Gentry, who plays Summer; and Griffin Gluck, who plays Quinn. The film centers around Lucy, who stumbles upon a time machine and ends up back in April 16, 2003, a few days before her sister and a few of her friends are killed by a masked serial killer.
I am a fan of slasher films that loop in elements of sci-fi and time travel, like in the Happy Death Day series. I was ready to see a newer film that intertwines sci-fi with horror and to see some gruesome kills. Did Time Cut give me what I wanted?

In a blend of nostalgic horror and time-twisting thrills, Time Cut—featuring Outer Banks star Madelaine Petsch and Cobra Kai’s Griffin Gluck—captures audiences with its unique spin on the classic slasher genre. Directed by Matt Smukler, this film echoes the gripping suspense of time travel, as it merges horror with a mind-bending narrative. Rooted in the classic ‘80s horror tradition yet reimagined with fresh, inventive elements, Time Cut has found a special place in this year’s releases. If you, like me, were either intrigued or disappointed with Time Cut on Netflix, you can seek out the following movies that feel like they belong with the Netflix original.

Next week’s hyper-contentious election and its face-off between virulently opposed camps has cast a fearful pall over our culture, creating an atmosphere where political terrors are outdoing the movie versions. Why hasn’t someone made a slasher pic about volunteers canvassing door-to-door at dusk?
This uneasy vibe has foregrounded an uncomfortable truth about horror films: how they often come with subtle political messages that are not always subtle enough to obscure which way they might vote in November. (To be clear, films cannot cast votes in a presidential election.) For example, you could easily argue that one of the most blatantly Republican horror movies was The Exorcist, along with the entire satanic-possession genre. In William Friedkin’s 1972 original, science and modern medicine are completely powerless to dent the demon who has possessed the innocent victim, leaving it up to the patriarchal Catholic Church to take on Pazuzu (and forge...

Plot: A high school student accidentally travels back to 2003 and decides to stop the serial killer who murdered her sister.
Review: Time travel and slashers seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly as this is now the second major streaming release in the last year to feature this Back to the Future meets Scream aesthetic. As such, I’m sure there are some that would immediately roll their eyes at the idea of approaching the subject matter again. But I’m not one of those people. Just like slasher movies, I’ll take as much time travel shenanigans as you’ll offer. And Time Cut certainly has plenty to offer…

The streamer’s gimmicky and over-familiar Halloween offering sees a teen going back to 2003 to save her sister from a masked killer
The triumphant return of the slasher movie, a subgenre that had been mostly dead and buried for far too long, arrived with key caveats. Those that were now being made were either part of a legacy franchise (updates to Scream or Halloween or next year’s I Know What You Did Last Summer) or were hinged on a goofy gimmick. We had time loops (the Happy Death Day series), time travel (Totally Killer), timeline jumping (the excellent Fear Street trilogy), alternate realities (It’s a Wonderful Knife) or body swapping (the underrated Freaky), brash genre-bending variations that all seemed a little reticent to rely solely on the base pleasures of the formula.

Are You excited for Netflix's upcoming film Time Cut, set to premiere on October 30? Directed by Hannah Macpherson, Time Cut is about a teen named Lucy who accidentally time-travels from the present day to 2003, days before a masked killer murders her sister.
Parts of Time Cut recall the 2017 film Happy Death Day and its 2019 sequel Happy Death Day 2U. The Happy Death Day series and Time Cut both deal with time travel and a psycho killer who is out for murder. However, Happy Death Day focuses on time traveling through time loops and adds in a multiverse element, with the characters living through a series of events again and again.
Happy Death Day 2U begins with Ryan, who is living the same day over and over, a day that ends with a figure in a creepy baby mask (the mascot of his college) killing him. Tree, the main character from Happy Death Day,...

This past weekend, Peacock and Blumhouse joined forces for a Halloween horror takeover at The Lodge at the iconic Stanley Hotel. The two-night special “Overnightmare” event lets guests choose their fear experience, with this Bloody Disgusting correspondent going all in on the max-level “Insidious” experience and living to tell about it.
Located in Estes Park, Colorado, the Stanley Hotel is the inspiration behind Stephen King’s classic horror novel The Shining, and the sold-out inaugural Overnightmare event delivered a unique, immersive, horror-filled experience that took full advantage of the iconic horror setting. The event began well before arrival: choosing your horror adventure.
Attendees had to sign waivers for participation, choose from a list of activities, and, more importantly, choose which fear experience to endure, each one themed to one of four Blumhouse films—Insidious, The Purge, Freaky, and Happy Death Day. Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 – but that project turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop moved forward first, and is so far along that a teaser trailer was even show at the New York Comic Con over the weekend! That trailer hasn’t made its way online yet, but a teaser poster has, along with some story details. Here’s the poster:

Universal Pictures revealed the new poster for the Drop movie at New York Comic Con today. The new thriller from Blumhouse, directed by Christopher Landon, will open in theaters on April 11, 2025.
Drop is rated PG-13 by the MPA for strong violent content, suicide, some strong language, and sexual references.
First dates are nerve-wracking enough. Going on a first date while an unnamed, unseen troll pings you personal memes that escalate from annoying to homicidal? Blood-chilling.
Director Christopher Landon returns to the thriller genre with the playful, keep-you-guessing intensity he perfected in the Happy Death Day films with this of-the-moment whodunnit where everyone in the vicinity is a suspect… or victim. Everyone’s a suspect according to the new poster for Drop, the latest horror thriller from director Christopher Landon. And it brings with it a new release date.
Drop releases only in theaters on April 11, 2025.
Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy, breakout star of White Lotus and The Perfect Couple, plays Violet, a widowed mother on her first date in years, who arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry (It Ends with Us’ Brandon Sklenar) is more charming and handsome than she expected. But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.
She is instructed to tell nobody and follow instructions or the hooded figure she sees on her home security cameras will kill Violet’s young son and babysitting sister. Violet must do exactly as directed or everyone she loves will die.

The sequel to 2017 horror Ready or Not is finally heading towards production, original directors Radio Silence and star Samara Weaving will return.
Despite the busy schedule of Radio Silence and the original film’s star, Samara Weaving, there have been talks about a sequel to Ready Or Not for several years. According to Deadline, Radio Silence have confirmed the sequel is happening and production will begin soon.
Weaving will return as Grace, and the actor said recently of the sequel, “I’m all in. I think we’re all in, I don’t know. I think we’re all in…I don’t know if we’ve had our blood handshake, but pretty much. We’ve done the spit handshake, but we haven’t cut each other’s hands and rubbed our blood together”.
Directorial duo Radio Silence – Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – have built up a hugely successful filmography over the last few years.

What’s an easy way to spice up the standard slasher formula? That’s easy: time travel. Christopher Landon‘s two “Happy Death Day” movies gave the slasher the “Groundhog Day” treatment to much fanfare back in the mid-late 2010s. Bast year’s “Totally Killer” went all-in on the premise, complete with a time machine, parents as teens, and a general “Back To The Future” vernacular.

“Scream 7,” the beleaguered next entry of the iconic horror franchise, has set a premiere date. On Tuesday, star Neve Campell announced that her return to Woodsboro will open in theaters on Feb. 27, 2026.
Campbell, who starred as Ghostface killer survivor Sidney Prescott in the first five films, is rejoining the franchise after sitting out 2023’s “Scream VI” due to a pay dispute. Also returning is franchise creator Kevin Williamson, who will direct from a script by Guy Busick. Williamson, who wrote three of the first four films, was an executive producer on the 2022 and 2023 revivals, but was not directly creatively involved until now. Courteney Cox, who has appeared in every “Scream” film so far, has not officially signed on yet, but is expected to return.

Legendary author Stephen King wasn’t yet a legendary author when he stayed at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado back in 1974 – but that stay helped him on his way to legendary status, because it inspired him to write the novel The Shining. Fifty years later, Blumhouse Productions and the Peacock streaming service have announced that they’re teaming up to take over the Lodge at the Stanley hotel for a weekend event called the Overnightmare, which is scheduled to take place from Friday, October 18th through Sunday, October 20th. As excited as fans are about the return of the slasher franchise Scream, it looks like there are still some casting and script details to iron out before we get any more official information about what direction the franchise is headed. While it was previously announced that Neve Campbell would return to reprise her role as final girl Sidney Prescott, Variety reported that Courteney Cox has not signed the dotted line to reprise her role as Gale Weathers. But don't panic. It sounds like it's only a matter of time.
"I'm not officially signed on. I'm not, but there will be a Scream 7," the actress told reporter Marc Malkin during a recent charity event.
That doesn't mean Gale won't be back, but it does mean there's a little bit of a hold-up in terms of getting Cox back on board. It's unclear what the issue might be, as it...

In the Virgin River season 5 finale, we learned how Mel met her birth father, and in Virgin River season 6, we're going to learn how Mel's mother met her father.
Jumping off of Mel's major paternity discovery last season, the upcoming new episodes will find the bride-to-be getting to know her birth father, Everett (John Allen Nelson), and part of that will be learning his history.
Earlier this year, Netflix announced that a Virgin River prequel series had been placed in development, and the series would center on Mel's mother, Sarah, and Everett.
On Sept. 23, Deadline announced the official castings for Sarah and Everett's prequel counterparts. Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr will make their debuts as Mel's parents in a 1970s flashback in Virgin River season 6.

Exclusive: As Deadline reported exclusively in February, the upcoming sixth season of Netflix’s Virgin River, which focuses on Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) nuptials, will also feature Mel’s late mother Sarah and biological father, Everett, in flashbacks. We can now reveal that Jessica Rothe and Callum Kerr have been cast in the roles and offer first-look images of them as Sarah and Everett in Season 6.
The recurring characters are being introduced as Netflix is exploring an expansion of the Virgin River universe with a prequel following Sarah and Everett’s origin story.
Seen in flashbacks mostly set in or around 1972, Sarah (Rothe) is a witty, free spirit from the big city with an ardent passion for activism, and trying to avoid the conventional/traditional life of a young woman in the ’70s. Always up for an adventure,...

Horror fans, we're happy to report that the upcoming Spyglass horror rom-com Heart Eyes finally has a theatrical release date. Unfortunately, the movie won't be coming out this year, which was expected since production just recently wrapped in New Zealand in July. The film is currently in post-production. However, Sony will be releasing this movie in theaters early next year. Feb. 7, 2025, to be exact. Don't forget to save the date!
Heart Eyes is described as a Valentine's Day slasher. Josh Ruben directed the film from a screenplay co-written by Phillip Murphy (Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy.
Taking place in Seattle, Washington, Heart Eyes follows a pair of co-workers working overtime at their job during Valentine's Day. But things take a turn for the worse when an infamous couple-hunting murderer known as the "Heart Eyes Killer" shows up at their job and mistakes them for a couple.

February 14th is a Friday in 2025, so that would seem to be the perfect choice of release date for a horror romantic comedy that’s set on Valentine’s Day, which is what the movie Heart Eyes is. But the February 14th release date has already been taken by Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and Paramount’s Smurfs animated movie… so Sony Pictures has chosen to release Heart Eyes on February 7th. Its competition on that date is the Universal action movie With Love, starring Ke Huy Quan.
Coming our way from Josh Ruben, the director of Werewolves Within and Scare Me, Heart Eyes was scripted by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, Landon’s Freaky collaborator Michael Kennedy (who also wrote It’s a Wonderful Knife), and Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard). The film has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a...

Scream queen Jessica Rothe has joined the cast of a new sci-fi horror movie, Affection, one with a plot vaguely reminiscent of her breakout role in the time loop slasher series Happy Death Day.
Deadline reports that the actress is playing the role of Ellie, who becomes trapped inside a "cyclical nightmare" that causes her memories to frequently "reset," erasing her life with her husband and daughter. Even worse, her real memories are replaced with "vivid memories of a life she's never lived."
In some ways, it sounds like a cross between a lighter rom-com like 50 First Dates and Happy Death Day. It's not quite the same thing as a time manipulation movie where each day repeats itself, but one that could be a lot darker depending on what direction this story takes.
Rothe will star opposite Joseph Cross, the actor best known for his performances in Lincoln and Licorice Pizza.

Young up-and-comer Julianna Layne (Prodigal Son) will co-star alongside the duo.
The film follows Ellie (Rothe), who is stuck in a cyclical nightmare. Grappling with a condition that erratically resets her memory, she’s left unable to remember her husband (Cross) or daughter (Julianna Layne). Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.
