Exclusive: Kelly Rowland (Mea Culpa) and Cliff “Method Man” Smith (Power Book II: Ghost) are set to lead the new Amazon MGM Studios rom-com Relationship Goals, based on Michael Todd’s New York Times bestseller Relationship Goals: How to Win at Dating, Marriage, and Sex. Robin Thede (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and Annie Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot) will also star.
Relationship Goals is a funny and inspiring romantic comedy on finding lasting love and sustaining a healthy relationship at every stage of courtship. The book, based on Todd’s viral sermon series about dating, marriage, and sex, spent 13 straight weeks on the NY Times bestsellers list and debuted at No. 1 on Amazon, according to the streamer.
The script was written by Laura Lekkos (Somewhere Only We Know), with prior drafts by Michael Elliot (R&b) and Cory Tynan (R&b). Rowland and Bart Lipton will executive produce while DeVon Franklin will produce. Linda Mendoza is set to direct.

He is represented by Shauna Garr, CAA, and Frankfurt Kernit Klein & Selz.

Gojira won the 2025 Grammy for Best Metal Performance on Sunday (February 2nd). The award was presented during the Premiere Ceremony that streamed online prior to the main televised ceremony.
The French metal band took home the Grammy for “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!),” along with collaborators Marina Viotti and Victor Le Masne. Gojira stole the show during the Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Paris back in July, delivering a mesmerizing performance of the song outside the windows of the Conciergerie building, a former prison and courthouse that sits along the River Seine.
In the Best Metal Performance category, Gojira beat out Judas Priest’s “Crown of Horns,” Metallica’s “Screaming Suicide,” Spiritbox’s “Cellar Door,” and Knocked Loose’s “Suffocate” featuring Poppy.
In a somewhat confusing moment, the house band at the Grammy ceremony played Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” as Gojira walked to the stage to receive their award.

20 years ago, Tyler Perry caught Hollywood completely by surprise when his low-budget romantic comedy "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" opened to $22 million at the U.S. box office. Though critics savaged the film, it received a sterling A+ CinemaScore from audience exit polls, thus indicating that Perry knew precisely what this underserved segment of African-American moviegoers were desperately craving. After this stunning success, Perry was off to the races, churning out at least one movie per year -- a pace that's even more amazing when you factor in the myriad of television series he began producing in 2007. Tyler Perry, whose base of operations is an Atlanta studio that bears his name, is a one-man entertainment industry.
While Perry seems untroubled by his continued lack of critical acclaim, he has on occasion attempted to mount a prestige film with the kind of socially important pedigree that goes down well with Academy Awards voters.

Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” is not only his most-watched Netflix movie to date — with 52.4 million views over its first four weeks on the streamer — but the historical drama has also boosted viewership for his other films on the service.
Netflix tells Variety that eyeballs on Perry’s four other Netflix films increased by more than 45% since “The Six Triple Eight” began streaming on Dec. 20. Plus, the film reached the Top 10 in more than 85 countries, the most of any film he’s made for the streamer.
It stands to reason that viewership numbers like these were what Netflix and Perry had in mind when the two parties entered into a multi-year first-look film deal in 2023. Perry, famous for his volume as a producer, has also turned the titles around swiftly compared to other overall creators at Netflix. His deal expanded last year to include series like “Beauty in Black,...

Tyler Perry's 2024 war movie has achieved a new Netflix viewership record for the filmmaker. As a prolific director, actor, producer, and writer, the current list of Tyler Perry movies on Netflix is extensive. Perry is arguably best known for the Madea franchise, a character Perry created and has portrayed across numerous projects. Perry is also known for his House of Payne series that aired for 11 seasons on TBS, during which Madea made several appearances.
Beyond many of his movies being available to stream on Netflix, Perry has directed several Netflix original movies in recent years. This includes A Madea Homecoming, the drama A Jazzman's Blues, and the legal thriller Mea Culpa. He did not direct Netflix's satirical and Academy Award-nominated film Don't Look Up, but he did star in it as television co-host Jack Bremmer. Critics have never been especially reliable supporters of Tyler Perry. The creator of the comedic Madea franchise, Perry began his career as a relatively unknown playwright. After adapting one of his plays, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, he rocketed into mainstream success and quickly became a prominent figure within Hollywood. He has since contributed to dozens of movies and TV shows as an actor, creator, director, writer, or producer. Perry's work has proven divisive, as many of his lowest-rated movies on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer have impressed audiences:

Gojira have released an official music video for their electrifying performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” at the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris this past summer.
The video captures the performance in all its glory, with the members of Gojira playing the song from platforms outside the windows of the Conciergerie building, a former prison and courthouse that sits along the River Seine. As they deliver the metal version of the French Revolution-era song “Ah, Ça Ira!,” they are joined by opera singer Marina Viotti, who floats down the river in a wooden ship.
This new official version of the video gets rid of the semi-annoying commentary from the original broadcast’s NBC announcers, and lets the music and visuals do the talking.
At the end of August, Gojira released an official single version of the song, which went on to be nominated for Best Metal Performance at the upcoming 2025 Grammy Awards.

Updated November 13, 2:59 p.m., with exclusive details: Netflix VP Film Niija Kuykendall is the latest executive out at the streamer amid staff trimming heading into the holidays.
We hear that Kuykendall will depart after a transition period through the end of the year. No next destination was disclosed.
Sources tell us the departure comes amidst the continued realignment of Netflix’s ‘pod’ system of executive oversight since Dan Lin took over the streamer’s top film post from Scott Stuber earlier this year — a system that has executives responsible for oversight of particular genres.
With Netflix for nearly three years, Kuykendall has had oversight of faith-based, YA and holiday films. Amidst her departure, YA will move over the comedies and rom-coms pod led by Jason Young, who we’ve learned exclusively has been promoted to VP Film. In more news, faith-based and holiday films will move over to the...

In February 2024, a spicy crime drama reigned over the Netflix top 10. That crime drama was "Mea Culpa," the first product to come out of a multi-year first-look deal between Netflix and Tyler Perry. Unfortunately, the critical response to this Kelly Rowland-led outing didn't bode well for future Perry/Netflix emissions, with "Mea Culpa" garnering a damning 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That said, we live in an age where streaming success is enough, and it seems there will be no slowing down for Perry as his new 8-episode drama series has similarly dominated the Netflix charts.
"Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black" is described by Tudum as an "easy-on-the-eyes series." If that's not enough to set off alarm bells, the synopsis might be. Set in Atlanta, "Beauty in Black" follows Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams), an exotic dancer struggling to make ends meet who eventually crosses paths with Mallory (Crystle Stewart) a...

Gojira’s thrilling performance during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics earlier this summer was momentous on a global scale for both the band and heavy metal in general. We might be biased here at Heavy Consequence, but it clearly stole the show.
As a post-celebration of Paris hosting the Summer Games, Gojira’s performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira)” was projected against the famous Arc de Triomphe monument in Place Charles de Gaulle over the weekend.

Gojira themselves weren’t there this time around, as they are in the midst of supporting Korn on a North American tour (pick up tickets here). Instead, a striking visage of the band from the opening ceremony — performing outside the windows of the Conciergerie building overlooking the River Seine — was projected against the archway at night.
Really, the only thing missing from the reprisal was the band.

Meanwhile, frontman Jonathan Davis and company performed three songs each from classic ’90s albums Life Is Peachy, Follow the Leader, and Issues, with each album represented in three-song encore: “Falling Away From Me,” “Good God,” and the show-closing “Freak on a Leash.” Among the highlights was the band’s first performance of “Hey Daddy” since 1999.

Netflix has unveiled a trailer for Tyler Perry’s original wartime drama “The Six Triple Eight,” starring Kerry Washington.
According to the official logline, “‘The Six Triple Eight’ is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.”
Washington plays Major Charity Adams, who, in the trailer, commands a battalion of women soldiers and gives them some stern words of encouragement before starting their training. “I am giving you my best, and you will give me yours. A lot of people do not want us to succeed. We have the most to prove,” she barks. “Welcome to the Women’s Army Corp.”
Other cast members include Oprah Winfrey, Susan Sarandon, Ebony Obsidian, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery,...

Tyler Perry might be known for the ‘Madea’ film series and similarly clownish comedies, but lately, the filmmaker has been leaning towards more serious work and dramas. Following 2022’s “A Jazzman’s Blues,” Perry’s directed three films that will have come out before 2024 is over: the legal thriller “Mea Culpa,” the drama thriller “Divorce In Black” and now, the WWII drama “The Six Triple Eight.”

Tyler Perry’s been making waves through his productions, and the latest one after Netflix’s Mea Culpa is Divorce in the Black. The film follows 37-year-old Ava, who has been putting up with her husband Dallas’ shenanigans for many years. They went against their parents’ wishes and got married, and Ava fought hard to try to prove that Dallas was a good man, and the perfect man for her. However, Dallas has never been good to Ava. In fact, it seems she keeps putting up with him because she knows that his family treated him badly and that he’s the way he is because of some sort of traumatic incident. Ava’s father is a preacher, and her mother is a pious woman, while on the other hand, Dallas’ mom is not particularly interested in the church or Ava’s father’s preachings. The film begins at Dallas’ brother’s funeral,...

Beyoncé‘s solo success was once difficult for her former Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland to watch. The singer felt she was in Beyoncé’s shadow, which took a toll on their friendship. But years later, Rowland gained enough clarity to share her feelings on the situation through a song.

Rowland has been very open about her insecurities regarding Beyoncé’s post-Destiny’s Child success. Beyoncé thrived after breaking away from the group, having sold over 200 million records worldwide on her own. Even back in their Destiny’s Child days, Rowland felt she was playing second fiddle to the artist. That feeling only intensified after the group’s separation.

While the Cannes Film Festival makes headlines for its world premieres of some of the best films of the year, it also comes under fire for a few unsavory moments. Kelly Rowland, who starred in this year’s Mea Culpa, had an argument with a security guard at the red carpet of the festival when she was pushed away from the event quickly.
While Rowland did not expand on what the argument was about, the guard was seen pushing around Dominican actress Massiel Taveras on the red carpet while she posed for the press. Taveras also seemed to have a bitter argument with the guard and was even seen pushing her when the team started to roll up her dress.

Kelly Rowland is setting the record straight about her Cannes Film Festival interaction.
Earlier this week, footage of security guards rushing Rowland (and her defending herself) at the Marcello Mio red carpet went viral. On Thursday, the Destiny’s Child star explained what exactly happened and why she “stood [her] ground.”
“The woman knows what happened. I know what happened,” Rowland told the Associated Press on Thursday. “I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries, and that is it.”

Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are teaming up to produce faith-based films under a multi-year and multi-picture first-look deal at Netflix.
The films will be produced by the duo in conjunction with Tyler Perry Studios in the latest expansion of Perry’s creative partnership at Netflix, inked as a first-look film deal in October 2023 and has broadened to include scripted and unscripted TV projects.
“I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects,” said Perry in a statement announcing the partnership. “I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder everyday, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. And there’s no better place than Netflix.”

Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin (Miracles From Heaven) are getting into business with Netflix to make faith-based movies together.
The first film under their new partnership will be R&b, written by Mike Elliott (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan, and described as a modern-day retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz, an iconic Biblical love story. Set in Tennessee, R&b follows a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widowed woman, only to the love of her life and gain the mother she never had.

Netflix reported its first-quarter 2024 earnings Thursday, revealing it added a whopping 9.33 million paid subscribers.
Analysts consensus estimates were for Netflix to add 3.93 million paid subs globally in Q1 (to reach 264.21 million), according to StreetAccount. Per Netflix, it has now climbed to 269.60 million subs as of March 31.
These impressive Q1 results come following a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers added for the fourth quarter of 2023, which was a Q4 record for Netflix. Despite this back-to-back growth worth boasting about, Netflix announced Thursday it will stop reporting quarterly sub totals beginning in 2025, a move that is sure to shock an industry that has been fueled by the battle for streaming subscribers for years.
The Q1 2024 lineup that fueled Netflix’s sub growth included its live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the “Game of Thrones” creator’s sci-fi series “3 Body Problem,” Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentleman,” the latest season of “Love Is Blind,...

The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender had a big premiere week.
The remake of the beloved Nickelodeon animated series opened at No. 1 overall on Nielsen’s streaming charts for Feb. 19-25. Avatar had 2.56 billion minutes of viewing in the United States over its first four days (it premiered Feb. 22), the second biggest week for any streaming title in 2024 so far (behind the 3.04 billion for Fool Me Once in early January).
Love Is Blind also had a big week for Netflix. The dating show more than doubled its total viewing time from the previous week, growing to 2.41 billion minutes as Netflix released the second batch of episodes from season six.

Millie Bobby Brown is once again reigning over Netflix with her latest project.
Her new film Damsel recorded 35.3M views in just three days of availability, easily boosting it to the top of the English film charts (and taking the crown as the most-watched title of the week) from March 4 to March 10.
The film, also starring Robin Wright and Angela Bassett, is No. 1 in 79 countries, according to Netflix. It had more than three times the viewership of the No. 2 movie, Code 8: Part II — which was at the top of the list last week.
Also among the Top 10 films were Spaceman, which held firm at No. 3 with 10.8M views, and Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa, which ranked No. 5 with 5.1M views.
Over on the TV side of things, The Gentlemen took first place with 12.2M views. Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was recently renewed for two more seasons, stole second place with 9.1M views.

The one Law & Order: Svu character that TVLine readers ask about the most is Det. Terry Bruno, played by Kevin Kane. And we get it: A recurring role in the Bensonverse since Season 24, in addition to a few one-off appearances as different characters before that, has made Kane a full-time member of the squad (even if he technically remains a guest star). Add in Kane’s portrayal of his intriguing character — a cop who’s so rich he never has to work another day in his life, yet chooses to show up for the most grueling of cases?...

Kelly Rowland stole the show as she walked the red carpet on March 10. The “Dilemma” singer‘s look for the Vanity Fair Oscars Party was “classic beauty with a sexy twist.” Some fans said Rowland was giving Pretty Woman; others cited Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Avatar: The Last Airbender strikes again.
The live-action Netflix series was once again on top of the TV list from February 26 to March 3 with 19.9M views in its first full week on the platform. That’s slightly down from last week, but still by far the most-watched series on the platform during this interval.
Avatar still has a bit of a long way to go before it would break into Netflix’s most popular TV list. So far, it’s racked up about 40M of the 83M views it would need to surpass The Witcher Season 1, which is currently sitting in 10th place. There is plenty of time to make that happen, though, since the series has a hefty 91-day premiere window to do so.

It’s unsurprising that Adam Sandler’s “Spaceman” is an immediate #1 for Netflix, but you have to wonder if the Sandler audience knew what it was getting: It’s the story of a long-distance solo astronaut who encounters loneliness and a mutant spider on his journey to Venus. Directed by Johan Renck, who won a DGA Award for his direction of HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Reviews are mediocre and, per Netflix practice, it had token one-week showings in limited theaters. “Spaceman: debuted on the streamer March 1 and it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains. For now, it’s another example of how Sandler uses his Netflix deal to expand his scope. (The film was produced by Channing Tatum’s Free Association.)

Tyler Perry's film "Mea Culpa" flopped with critics but was a Netflix hit, setting high expectations for his next movie. "Six Triple Eight" has a promising storyline that appeals to critics, likely to overshadow the failures of "Mea Culpa." Despite poor reviews, Tyler Perry's popularity ensures success for his upcoming films on Netflix, with "Madea's Destination Wedding" also in the works.

Tyler Perry has wrapped production on the third movie in his four-picture deal with Amazon MGM Studios, a drama led by “P-Valley” and “Mea Culpa” star Shannon Thornton and “Run The World’s” Tosin Morohunfola.

Tyler Perry's legal thriller Mea Culpa helps reconcile a recasting decision in the BET drama series Sistas. Fans were upset with Perry's series Sistas for abruptly recasting Sean Sagar's character Jordan for season 7. Sean Sagar's exit from Sistas led to big roles in Mea Culpa and NCIS: Sydney.
Tyler Perry's new legal thriller Mea Culpa helps to reconcile an abrupt recasting decision within the production of his BET drama series, Sistas. Perry teamed with Netflix for the nail-biter Mea Culpa, an original film that follows a criminal defense attorney who takes on a murder case that becomes much more than it seems on the surface. Following the film's debut, Mea Culpa continues to stave off heavy criticism of Perry's absurd and hollow approach to what could have been an intriguing plot line, but be that as it may, the movie still has some, albeit a few, redeeming qualities.
