Exclusive: Kelly Rowland (Mea Culpa) and Cliff “Method Man” Smith (Power Book II: Ghost) are set to lead the new Amazon MGM Studios rom-com Relationship Goals, based on Michael Todd’s New York Times bestseller Relationship Goals: How to Win at Dating, Marriage, and Sex. Robin Thede (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and Annie Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot) will also star.

Relationship Goals is a funny and inspiring romantic comedy on finding lasting love and sustaining a healthy relationship at every stage of courtship. The book, based on Todd’s viral sermon series about dating, marriage, and sex, spent 13 straight weeks on the NY Times bestsellers list and debuted at No. 1 on Amazon, according to the streamer.

The script was written by Laura Lekkos (Somewhere Only We Know), with prior drafts by Michael Elliot (R&b) and Cory Tynan (R&b). Rowland and Bart Lipton will executive produce while DeVon Franklin will produce. Linda Mendoza is set to direct.

Rowland recently starred in Netflix’s Tyler Perry film Mea Culpa. She has also guest starred on several series including Girlfriends, Empire, American Soul, Being Mary Jane, and L.A.’s Finest. On the film side, Rowland appeared in Kevin Hart’s Think Like A Man, New Line Cinema’s Freddy vs. Jason, Netflix’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow, and produced and starred in Merry Liddle Christmas Baby. Additionally, she executive produced her docuseries Chasing Destiny and co-produced a digital series called Milk + Honey alongside Idris Elba and Issa Rae. She is repped by UTA, Sb Projects, and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka.

Smith starred in all four seasons of the hit Starz series Power Book II: Ghost, which recently wrapped up after four seasons last year. For his portrayal of Davis MacLean, he received three NAACP Image Awards for “Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.” He can currently be seen in Carnegie Hill Entertainment’s feature Bad Shabbos, and the Paramount+’s feature film On the Come Up for which he received an NAACP Image Award nomination for “Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture”. Smith will next be seen in Maude Apatow’s directorial debut Poetic License and as a guest star in Peacock’s Emmy Award-winning original series Poker Face for Season 2. He is represented by Shauna Garr, CAA, and Frankfurt Kernit Klein & Selz.

Six-time Emmy nominee Robin Thede is the creator, showrunner, executive producer, writer, and star of HBO’s Emmy-winning sketch comedy series, A Black Lady Sketch Show. She recently starred alongside Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross in the Amazon MGM Studios holiday feature, Candy Cane Lane. Previously, she was the creator, executive producer, writer and host of The Rundown with Robin Thede on BET becoming one of the only Black women to host a late-night talk show. She is represented by WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole Llp.

Gonzalez can be seen in films such as East of the Mountains directed by S.J. Chiro, Flamin’ Hot from Searchlight Pictures and Franklin Entertainment, Drive-Away Dolls directed by Ethan Coen, and Jenni, which Gonzalez stars in and produced. On the TV side, credits include Netflix’s Gentefied, Showtime’s Shameless, FX’s American Horror Story, Netflix’s Good Girls, Starz’s Vida, and most recently, NBC’s Lopez vs Lopez. Franklin serves as President and CEO of Franklin Entertainment, a production company dedicated to uplifting the human spirit through inspirational content. He just wrapped production on R & B, a modern version of the Biblical love story of Ruth & Boaz. Franklin has also produced the inspirational hit films Flamin’ Hot directed by Eva Longoria, Breakthrough starring Chrissy Metz for Disney/Fox, Sony’s The Star and Miracles From Heaven starring Jennifer Garner. Gojira won the 2025 Grammy for Best Metal Performance on Sunday (February 2nd). The award was presented during the Premiere Ceremony that streamed online prior to the main televised ceremony.

Though critics savaged the film, it received a sterling A+ CinemaScore from audience exit polls, thus indicating that Perry knew precisely what this underserved segment of African-American moviegoers were desperately craving. After this stunning success, Perry was off to the races, churning out at least one movie per year -- a pace that's even more amazing when you factor in the myriad of television series he began producing in 2007. Tyler Perry, whose base of operations is an Atlanta studio that bears his name, is a one-man entertainment industry.

While Perry seems untroubled by his continued lack of critical acclaim, he has on occasion attempted to mount a prestige film with the kind of socially important pedigree that goes down well with Academy Awards voters.

Tyler Perry’s “The Six Triple Eight” is not only his most-watched Netflix movie to date — with 52.4 million views over its first four weeks on the streamer — but the historical drama has also boosted viewership for his other films on the service.

Gojira have released an official music video for their electrifying performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” at the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris this past summer.

The video captures the performance in all its glory, with the members of Gojira playing the song from platforms outside the windows of the Conciergerie building, a former prison and courthouse that sits along the River Seine. As they deliver the metal version of the French Revolution-era song “Ah, Ça Ira!,” they are joined by opera singer Marina Viotti, who floats down the river in a wooden ship.

This new official version of the video gets rid of the semi-annoying commentary from the original broadcast’s NBC announcers, and lets the music and visuals do the talking.

At the end of August, Gojira released an official single version of the song, which went on to be nominated for Best Metal Performance at the upcoming 2025 Grammy Awards.

Updated November 13, 2:59 p.m., with exclusive details: Netflix VP Film Niija Kuykendall is the latest executive out at the streamer amid staff trimming heading into the holidays.

We hear that Kuykendall will depart after a transition period through the end of the year. No next destination was disclosed.

Sources tell us the departure comes amidst the continued realignment of Netflix’s ‘pod’ system of executive oversight since Dan Lin took over the streamer’s top film post from Scott Stuber earlier this year — a system that has executives responsible for oversight of particular genres.

She joined in October 2021 as VP of film, where she oversaw a new department focusing on mid-sized holiday, faith-based and young adult movies. Netflix didn’t give a reason for her departure but confirmed she’ll be exiting the company at the end of the year.

“Niija’s creative relationships with established and upcoming filmmakers, like Tyler Perry, Denzel and Malcolm Washington, and David Yates, have had a great impact on our film slate,” Netflix’s film VP Doug Belgrad said in a statement. “I want to thank her for her many contributions, including films such as ‘The Piano Lesson,’ ‘The Deliverance,’ ‘The Six Triple Eight,’ ‘Pain Hustlers’ and ‘Mea Culpa.’”

In February 2024, a spicy crime drama reigned over the Netflix top 10. That crime drama was "Mea Culpa," the first product to come out of a multi-year first-look deal between Netflix and Tyler Perry. Gojira’s thrilling performance during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics earlier this summer was momentous on a global scale for both the band and heavy metal in general. We might be biased here at Heavy Consequence, but it clearly stole the show.

As a post-celebration of Paris hosting the Summer Games, Gojira’s performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira)” was projected against the famous Arc de Triomphe monument in Place Charles de Gaulle over the weekend.

Gojira themselves weren’t there this time around, as they are in the midst of supporting Korn on a North American tour (pick up tickets here). Instead, a striking visage of the band from the opening ceremony — performing outside the windows of the Conciergerie building overlooking the River Seine — was projected against the archway at night.

Really, the only thing missing from the reprisal was the band.

Korn launched their Fall 2024 North American tour on Thursday night (September 12th) at MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa, Florida.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beauty in Black's release date on Oct. 24 will be the first of a two-part drop for the series. Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for Tyler Perry’s “Divorce in the Black,” starring Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict. The thriller will be available to stream globally on Prime Video starting July 11.

Per Amazon’s official logline, the film follows ���Ava, a young bank professional who is devastated when her husband Dallas abandons a marriage she is determined to fight for until fate intervenes, revealing Dallas’ wicked deeds that have trashed their marriage, and once upon a time sabotaged Ava’s destiny to be loved by her true soulmate.”

“I’ve tried everything. You have taught me since I was a little girl to be a wife,” Ava tells her parents in the trailer. “But what happens when that’s not enough?”

Good and Hardrict are joined by a cast that includes Joseph Lee Anderson, Shannon Wallace, Taylor Polidore, Richard Lawson and Debbi Morgan. Perry serves as writer-director.

Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are teaming up to produce faith-based films under a multi-year and multi-picture first-look deal at Netflix.

The films will be produced by the duo in conjunction with Tyler Perry Studios in the latest expansion of Perry’s creative partnership at Netflix, inked as a first-look film deal in October 2023 and has broadened to include scripted and unscripted TV projects.

“I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects,” said Perry in a statement announcing the partnership. “I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder everyday, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. The first film under their new partnership will be R&b, written by Mike Elliott (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan, and described as a modern-day retelling of the story of Ruth and Boaz, an iconic Biblical love story. Set in Tennessee, R&b follows a young woman who escapes the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widowed woman, only to the love of her life and gain the mother she never had.

Netflix reported its first-quarter 2024 earnings Thursday, revealing it added a whopping 9.33 million paid subscribers.

Analysts consensus estimates were for Netflix to add 3.93 million paid subs globally in Q1 (to reach 264.21 million), according to StreetAccount. Per Netflix, it has now climbed to 269.60 million subs as of March 31.

These impressive Q1 results come following a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers added for the fourth quarter of 2023, which was a Q4 record for Netflix. Despite this back-to-back growth worth boasting about, Netflix announced Thursday it will stop reporting quarterly sub totals beginning in 2025, a move that is sure to shock an industry that has been fueled by the battle for streaming subscribers for years.

Her new film Damsel recorded 35.3M views in just three days of availability, easily boosting it to the top of the English film charts (and taking the crown as the most-watched title of the week) from March 4 to March 10.

The film, also starring Robin Wright and Angela Bassett, is No. 1 in 79 countries, according to Netflix. It had more than three times the viewership of the No. 2 movie, Code 8: Part II — which was at the top of the list last week.

The live-action Netflix series was once again on top of the TV list from February 26 to March 3 with 19.9M views in its first full week on the platform. That’s slightly down from last week, but still by far the most-watched series on the platform during this interval.

Avatar still has a bit of a long way to go before it would break into Netflix’s most popular TV list. So far, it’s racked up about 40M of the 83M views it would need to surpass The Witcher Season 1, which is currently sitting in 10th place. There is plenty of time to make that happen, though, since the series has a hefty 91-day premiere window to do so.

It’s unsurprising that Adam Sandler’s “Spaceman” is an immediate #1 for Netflix, but you have to wonder if the Sandler audience knew what it was getting: It’s the story of a long-distance solo astronaut who encounters loneliness and a mutant spider on his journey to Venus. Directed by Johan Renck, who won a DGA Award for his direction of HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Reviews are mediocre and, per Netflix practice, it had token one-week showings in limited theaters. “Spaceman: debuted on the streamer March 1 and it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains. For now, it’s another example of how Sandler uses his Netflix deal to expand his scope. (The film was produced by Channing Tatum’s Free Association.)

The Today Show being criticized for its poor dressing rooms wasn’t on our 2024 bingo card, but thankfully, something good will come of it.

Hoda Kotb has revealed that the hit morning show is upgrading its dressing rooms.

“We are [upgrading them]!” Kotb said.

The 57-year-old shared the news with Page Six at the fifth anniversary of her co-host Jenna Bush Hager’s book club, Read with Jenna.

Hager was on hand to offer her two cents on the imminent upgrade.

Tyler Perry has wrapped production on the third movie in his four-picture deal with Amazon MGM Studios, a drama led by “P-Valley” and “Mea Culpa” star Shannon Thornton and “Run The World’s” Tosin Morohunfola.

Perry wrote, directed and produced the film, which recently wrapped filming on location in Colorado and at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta under the working title “Joy Ridge.”
