This In-Betweeners style coming-of-age comedy backed by a rock anthem score is set in 1980s Bangalore. Know-it all teenager Naman (Shashank Arora), and his fellow nerdy mates Ajay and Ramu win every local quiz competition and get hammered on the prize money. Then their big chance comes as the All-India Quiz Final in Calcutta is announced. The three quiz musketeers set out on a chaotic train ride north, but on the journey Naman has a mighty crush on the super-quiz heroine Naina. Well it certainly seems to be falling all in place for very suave and edgy Mallya Jr. on his film front. Sid, who is currently completing his degree at The Royal Central School of Drama in London, is over the moon about his debut film: not just premiering but also competing in the World Cinema dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film is directed by Calcutta – based Q, quite the darling of the indie circuit having caused a stir with groundbreaking hits like Tasher Desh and Gandu. The film is produced by Steve Barron who’s other comedies include Dan Akroyd’s ‘Coneheads’ and ‘Mike Bassett – England Manager’. The script is by Naman Ramachandran.
The movie’s plot is centered on the quiz team scene in India in the early eighties and is a smart teen comedy in the vein of the British hit ‘The In-betweeners’ from 2011. Apparently...

“India is one of the most interesting places in Asia in terms of new talent and dynamic young directors,” said Bursztejn who co-produced Lou Ye’s Summer Palace and Wang Chao’s Luxury Car.

Ludo co-director Q has been a filmmaker that I've had my eye on since his brash explosion onto the international art house scene with 2010's Gandu. That film is loud, aggressive, and challenging to the viewer, in the way that the best transgressive cinema can be. Over the years I've watched Q struggle to wrangle in that fury that he showcased with Gandu and hone in on a more focused, more direct style that still refuses to play nice with his audiences. Tasher Desh, his second narrative film, was a psychedelic transmutation of Rabindranath Tagore's stage play by way of a diptych meta narrative that excited me for its "fuck you" attitude and guerrilla style. This latest film, Ludo, a collaboration between Q and his...

The Times of India today reported that Bengali filmmaker Q (Gandu, Tasher Desh) is preparing to play Satyajit Ray in a movie about the making of Ray's seminal work in Indian cinema, Pather Panchali. The film will center around Ray's struggle to get the film off the ground and will feature several other notable personalities from the era in supporting roles. This announcement comes hot on the heels of the brand new restoration of Ray's Apu Trilogy (Pather Panchali, Aparajito, and The World of Apu) currently making the art house rounds from Janus Films. There are no more internationally revered Indian films than this trilogy, so it is perfectly ripe for adaptation as a story. The film, which is as yet untitled, already has several other main...

Speculations have been on about Sid Mallya’s Hollywood ventures but now it seems like there is some solid development on his acting debut.
Looks like Sid Mallya is all set to finally make his silver screen debut, having landed himself his debut film – an international production that shows off Sid’s true blue Brit side. Directed by Calcutta based Q, produced by Steve Barron (who’s other comedies include Dan Akroyd’s Coneheads and Mike Bassett: England Manager), the film story is centered on the quizzers scene in the early 80s in India. It is a smart and witty teen comedy. Director Q has created quite a stir in the indie film circuit with festival hits like Tasher Desh and Gandu.

Bengali cinema’s controversial duo, Nikon and Q are ready with their latest film – Ludo. A film entering the unchartered territory of fantasy thrillers, Ludo is bound to both – shock and leave audiences awestruck – with its brand new storytelling.
The makers of the movie have gone ahead and applied for registering the film’s title ‘Ludo’ as a trademark, as an entertainment idea, after sensing its strong potential of building a franchise around the movie/concept.
Co-producer Nandini Mansinghka of Idyabooster says, “To acquire/own a film title, one needs to register it with a film association, in this case we have done with Eimpa (Eastern Indian Motion Pictures Association). But that’s not enough in case of a dispute. If one trademarks the title, which is registering it with the government, it protects our interest and refrain others in the country from using it (in that category) as a film’s title/name.

The film is the latest by director Q, who made the critically acclaimed and controversial film ‘Gandu’, which was banned from a theatrical release in India but became a cult phenomenon, both in India and across the globe. Q’s films have always found festival and critical appreciation internationally, with BBC calling him the ‘most subversive Indian filmmaker’. His latest film, ‘Tasher Desh’, premiered in Rome, and has been received very well. Nikon is Q’s collaborator and editor, an alumnus of Srfti and Emily Carr, Vancouver. He has edited ‘Tasher Desh’, ‘Bishh’ and ‘Love In India’.
‘Ludo’ is being made under the banner of OverdoseJoint, Q’s production house, a progressive art platform making original films, music and design and is co-produced by Idyabooster and Starfire Movies.
The movie stars the vivacious and beautiful actress Rii, who plays a character yet to be seen on the Indian screens.

Bengali cinema's enfant terrible, Q, is not known for making films for the faint of heart or weak of mind. His latest film, an adaptation of a play from Nobel Prize winning Bengali author Rabindranath Tagore, is no exception. Tasher Desh may not be as sexually confrontational or vulgar as Q's breakout feature, Gandu, but it is nonetheless a piece of work to be contemplated as much as enjoyed by the more adventurous viewer.Much like Gandu, Tasher Desh follows its own rhythm, abandoning the traditional three act structure and all rules of dialogue. Rather than telling us a story, Q is putting us through an experience. A beautifully shot, impeccably scored, and at times completely infuriating experience. If you can make it through the first...

I n a recent interview, Q, the director of Tasher Desh mentioned, “It’s exactly the same story everywhere in the world. The kind of unrest, the feeling of revolt, the feeling of dissent is getting more and more every day. The entire Snowden episode…there is something going on. But it’s allegory. You won’t get any real stuff from this. It’s a poem. It’s less of a film, more of a poem, more of a song, more of an installation.”
Hence it becomes a bit risky to label Td as cinema and review it from that perspective. Truly there are parts of it which seem straight out of any jazzy music video and some from the similar-looking perfume/deo advertisements with foreign models in skimpy dresses. Yes, Td boasts of an international cast for the possible excuse that the narrative of Td in Tagore’s...

You'd either love "Tasher Desh" or hate it, but you can definitely not ignore it. This Nfdc (National Film Development Corporation)-presented Bengali film released under PVR Director's Rare Banner is pitched as a quirky adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's edgy fantasy.
The narration has three layers bursting with lessons of life, regarding rules, hopes, desires and fate.
It's a story about society and culture, of brotherhood and winds of destiny, of acceptance and revolution..

Q breaks through the clutter not only by making unconventional films but also coming up with innovative strategies to promote them. Just like the concert Gandu Circus emerged from his last film Gandu; Kolkata is now gearing up for TripTash, a live extension of Tasher Desh that comprises of an art installation, live music and much more. TripTash runs from August 20-27 while Tasher Desh hits theatres in Kolkata and Mumbai on August 23.
In a telephone conversation just before the event, Q gives DearCinema a feel of what TripTash is going to be like.
What is TripTash all about?
I am sitting here in the middle of it all. It is basically a live installation, a live extension of the idea of Tasher Desh. Just like how Gandu circus emerged out of Gandu. A band emerges out of a film and then the band becomes real, it comes out of the context of the film.
