Exclusive: Thirteen-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams has signed on to produce the Mikey Alfred-directed drama North Hollywood, which is billed as being the first movie ever about becoming a pro skateboarder.

The film was submitted to Sundance but was rejected. Instead of letting that stop everyone involved, the filmmakers decided to hold their own buyers screening, which is set for Thursday in Los Angeles. They posted that news on Instagram and are generating great buzz (see below).

Williams will produce with Mimi Valdés, Malcolm Washington, Kevin Turen, Harrison Kreiss, and Carmen Cuba. North Hollywood stars Ryder McLaughlin, Aramis Hudson, Nico Hiraga, Miranda Cosgrove, Angus Cloud and Vince Vaughn.

It’s almost unheard of for one artist to earn multiple Grammy nominations for Record of the Year at the same ceremony. Pharrell Williams did it in 2014 as a featured artist on both “Blurred Lines” and the winning song “Get Lucky,” but when nominations are announced on December 5 two hopefuls could make history as the first female artists ever to accomplish the feat: Beyonce and Cardi B.

Beyonce has been nominated for Record of the Year five times without a win thus far: “Say My Name” with Destiny’s Child (2001), “Crazy in Love” (2004), “Irreplaceable” (2008), “Halo” (2010) and “Formation” (2017). She could up that total to seven this year with a pair of duets. Avicii received a loving tribute from the stage thanks to Norwegian DJ Kygo. Towards the end of his set, an image of Avicii appeared in triplicate on the giant video screens while the 2017 song “Without You” played. Music icons came together in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Sunday to try to add some brightness after some dark times.

Dave Matthews Band -- which was founded in the college town -- headlined the Concert for Charlottesville on Sunday at the University of Virginia's Scott Stadium, where some of the biggest names in music turned out to help the town heal in the wake of deadly clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters in August.

While the end of summer saw 2015’s festival season coming to a close, music lovers can rejoice that next year’s season is already on the horizon, as the first news of 2016’s headlining acts begin to surface. Exclusive: Craig Fairbrass to star in action-thriller Cartel.

UK finance outfit Red Rock Entertainment and actor-producer Craig Fairbrass’s (Get Lucky) Impact Entertainment are to collaborate for the third time on action-thriller Cartel, which is in development.

Outside Bet and Bonded By Blood director Sacha Bennett is due to direct the Puerto Rico-based story about a military policeman (Fairbrass) who clashes with a local cartel while investigating the murder of a priest.

The deal was negotiated by Red Rock Entertainment’s Gary Collins and Impact Entertainment’s Luke Fairbrass.

Collins said: “We are delighted to be partnering again with Impact Entertainment; working with them has been seamless and are very excited about Cartel’s International appeal.”

The BBC's Daft Punk documentary will feature guest appearances from the likes of Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Todd Edwards, Pete Tong and more will appear on Daft Punk Unchained, which is being produced by BBC Worldwide France.

The documentary will premiere on French TV station Canal+ on June 24, but details of a UK transmission have yet to be confirmed.

Few names in Edm carry the kind of weight that Daft Punk does. The French duo – which consists of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter – made a lasting mark on the world of dance music with 1997’s Homework, but instead of fading into obscurity like so many of the genre’s other elder statesmen, their influence has endured through their last full-length effort, Get Lucky. For this reason, it’s no wonder that the Edm community is rejoicing over murmurs that they’ve got a new album in the works.

And speaking of elder statesmen, the information comes from none other than Paul Johnson – a proper Chicago house legend in his own right whose track “Hear The Music” inspired Daft Punk to create house music in the first place. As such, it’s quite fitting that according to Johnson, the upcoming album will mark the duo’s return to house.

He scored an Oscar nomination and topped several charts with his hit single “Happy” and now Pharrell Williams is turning the ditty into a book for children.

Per a Billboard report, the “Get Lucky” singer will release “Happy” on September 22nd and Putnam Publishers has ordered an initial run of 250,000.

Adding to the excitement, the new project is the first of a four-book deal between Pharrell and Putnam, so Williams will pen at least three subsequent installments for kids in the years to come. Tom Varner: Nine Surprises (Tom Varner Music)

Composer and French horn player Tom Varner is indeed full of surprises, and they are not confined to the suite of that name (which, surprisingly, has 15 movements). I was most surprised by the outburst of New Orleans jazz in the last piece on the CD, "Mele," which Varner calls "a Gil Evans-influenced variation on the harmonic structure of a pop Hawaiian Christmas song." In general the music here seems highly composed -- these are not heads with strings of solos -- but still allowing for improvisation. Max Milner ended up being one of our favourite Voice contestants in the first series - and not just because of the relish with which Danny O'Donoghue said his name. This was on the very first episode of The Voice UK and instantly got us interested, as Max skilfully combined 'Come Together' and 'Lose Yourself' in a mash-up that isn't just a gimmick. He's great - and Danny attempting to rap along adds some laughs, too.

Stephen Colbert will sign off for good at the end of Thursday night’s “Colbert Report,” but the memories he leaves behind from nine years of satirical late-night comedy may out-live all of us.
