Music-centered biopics are one of the hottest commodities in Cinema today. From the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic to the retellings of the Whitney Houston and Elvis stories, it feels as if you’re a figure in music, you will get a biopic onscreen. However, there is an upcoming biopic about one of the biggest musicians out there. That is a little more unconventional. Pharrell Williams’ biopic, ‘Piece by Piece’, had a trailer before the new ‘Despicable Me’ movie. While many people were excited to see a Pharrell Williams biopic, many were confused as a biopic does not portray the Pharrell Williams story with actors. Rather, ‘Piece by Piece’ is a Lego movie, meaning that the Pharrell Williams story will be told with animated Lego characters. Who will win Song of the Year at the 2022 Grammys? This category is awarded strictly to the songwriters of the year’s best composition. This differs from Record of the Year, which goes to the artists, producers, and engineers. So which scribe or scribes will take it in 2022? Scroll down for our official odds, which have been calculated based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The odds are constantly changing, so we’ll be updating this list as the season progresses.
From 2019 to 2021, there were eight Grammy nomination slots in this category, as well as in Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. That was up from five nominees per category as had been the previous standard. And this year the top four categories were expanded again to 10 slots. But that isn’t the only recent shakeup. After prolonged criticism of the voting system,...

Exclusive: Thirteen-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams has signed on to produce the Mikey Alfred-directed drama North Hollywood, which is billed as being the first movie ever about becoming a pro skateboarder.
The film was submitted to Sundance but was rejected. Instead of letting that stop everyone involved, the filmmakers decided to hold their own buyers screening, which is set for Thursday in Los Angeles. They posted that news on Instagram and are generating great buzz (see below).
Williams will produce with Mimi Valdés, Malcolm Washington, Kevin Turen, Harrison Kreiss, and Carmen Cuba. North Hollywood stars Ryder McLaughlin, Aramis Hudson, Nico Hiraga, Miranda Cosgrove, Angus Cloud and Vince Vaughn.
Williams has produced some notable movies including Rick Famuyiwa’s Sundance and Cannes feature Dope; 20th Century Fox’s $236M-grossing Hidden Figures, for which Williams received an Oscar Best Picture nomination; and the 2017 biopic Roxanne, Roxanne, about...

It’s almost unheard of for one artist to earn multiple Grammy nominations for Record of the Year at the same ceremony. Pharrell Williams did it in 2014 as a featured artist on both “Blurred Lines” and the winning song “Get Lucky,” but when nominations are announced on December 5 two hopefuls could make history as the first female artists ever to accomplish the feat: Beyonce and Cardi B.
Beyonce has been nominated for Record of the Year five times without a win thus far: “Say My Name” with Destiny’s Child (2001), “Crazy in Love” (2004), “Irreplaceable” (2008), “Halo” (2010) and “Formation” (2017). She could up that total to seven this year with a pair of duets. According to the combined predictions of nearly 2,000 Gold Derby users, she ranks fourth in the category for “Perfect” with Ed Sheeran (17/2 odds) and sixth for “Apeshit” with Jay-z (13/1).

Nile Rodgers, cofounder of Chic and a legendary producer and songwriter, has few peers in today’s music world: He co-wrote “We Are Family,” “Le Freak” and “Good Times,” the song that essentially created the backbone of hip-hop when interpolated by the Sugarhill Gang; he’s produced massive albums and songs by Madonna, David Bowie, Diana Ross, Duran Duran, Inxs, the B-52s and collaborated with Daft Punk (on the Grammy-winning “Get Lucky”) Pharrell, Disclosure, Lady Gaga and dozens and dozens of others.
He also worked extensively and was close friends with DJ and artist Avicii — who died of undisclosed causes Friday at the age of just 28 — although just one song has emerged, 2013’s “Lay Me Down,” which was sung by Adam Lambert.

The unexpected death of Edm superstar Avicii on the first day of the second weekend of the 2018 Coachella festival brought a somber tone to the desert fest, especially near the Sahara Tent — the Edm stage where (in a different location on the field) the DJ closed out the night in 2012.
Avicii received a loving tribute from the stage thanks to Norwegian DJ Kygo. Towards the end of his set, an image of Avicii appeared in triplicate on the giant video screens while the 2017 song “Without You” played. The screens then flashed to Avicii’s name and the words: “Rest in peace. We will miss you.”
On Saturday night, Nile Rodgers, who had collaborated with Avicii, said from the stage: “Just yesterday, one of my best friends in the world, Avicii, passed away.” Rodgers, who survived cancer after being diagnosed eight years ago, remarked that he was lucky to be alive,...

Beyoncé’s performance to cap off Coachella’s second day was so spectacular that it nearly rendered the 125,000 attendees amnesiac to anything that had come before. But there were other great sets that day — here are five other shows from Saturday that are slowly coming back to us:
David Byrne
Coincidentally, the ex-Talking Head also brought a marching band of sorts to Coachella, though his was a fraction of the size of Beyoncé’s, and they were dressed in gray business attire (minus shoes). Reports had been coming in from the east coast about how uniquely theatrical the setup is on his new “American Utopia”-supporting tour, and the brain that designed “Stop Making Sense” didn’t disappoint. Byrne’s entire 10-piece support team was as mobile as he was — keyboardists and bass drummers included — and spent the entire hour, to borrow a phrase from Ms. Knowles, getting into formation…...

Varun Dhawan’s career has had a lot of laughs and dances with films like Judwaa 2 and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania being amongst fan favourites. However, his 2018 releases seem to be taking a shift toward more serious and heartfelt stories. October, is one of those movies. Releasing the 13th April, the romantic drama is directed by Shoojit Sircar, written by Juhi Chaturvedi and starring alongside Varun, Banita Sandhu and Gitanjali Rao in the lead roles. We imagine that knowing a hint of the story that the music for this film is likely to be tender and really aim to toy with the audiences’ heartstrings. This responsibility has been handed to Shantanu Moitra, Abhishek Arora and Anupam Roy all experienced in the art of the love song.

Donald Trump didn’t get lucky this Bastille Day — he looked decidedly unenthusiastic as he watched a French marching band blaze through a medley of Daft Punk hits. With a beaming French President Emmanuel Macron seated nearby, Trump grimly endured the sight of French musicians doing robot choreography while reinterpreting electro-dance masterpieces like “Get Lucky” and “One More Time.” White-gloved French dignitaries clapped along enthusiastically, in a scene that at times recalled the Val Kilmer Cold War-Elvis movie parody “Top Secret.” Also Read: Trump to French First Lady Brigitte Macron: 'You're in Such Good Shape' (Video) To his credit,...

"I don't know if you deserve me," the pontiff formerly known as Lenny Belardo tells the horrified crowd in St. Peter's Square at the end of his bonkers first homily. Neither do we, Lenny, neither do we. Two episodes in, and The Young Pope shines like a city on a hill – a beacon of madcap brilliance, savage humor, and go-for-broke filmmaking excess right when we need it most. It's a light in the darkness, even if it ends with its title character in a very dark place. We mean that both literally and metaphorically.

By an overwhelming margin, "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars is leading Gold Derby's predictions to win Record of the Year with 1/3 odds, likely propelled by the fact that Mars has been a mainstay in the category: he was first nominated in 2010 ("Nothin' on You") and returned in 2011 ("Grenade") and 2013 ("Locked Out of Heaven"). A year before disco officially shimmied back into the mainstream via Daft Punk's “Get Lucky” in 2013, the then-17-piece New York collective Escort made a strong case for the genre’s revival with their critically adored self-titled debut. Three years later, the disco equivalent of hell freezing over (a new Giorgio Moroder album, one from Chic on the way) came to be, house music superseded disco as pop’s influence du jour (thanks, Disclosure), and Escort are finally releasing a sophomore LP (Animal Nature, out October 30). Check out the exclusive premiere of "Body Talk," Animal Nature’s buoyant banger of an opening number:Though Escort's songs will always take the shape of Studio 54’s flared silhouettes, their new material sounds more like dance music in the years following Disco Demolition Night. “When our first album came out, we were playing strictly dusty disco 12-inches and edits. That was the soundtrack...

In The Garden Of Garage: Hansen-Løve Recounts Brother’s Coming of Age During the Rise of House Music
Thanks to her brother Sven’s involvement in the popularization of French house music as a young DJ and club promoter throughout the 90s, director Mia Hansen-Løve grew up baptized in the propulsive wash of beats and samples that make up garage music. Her latest film, Eden, fictionalizes her brother’s Inside Llewyn Davis-esque music career with an authentic eye and ear for the electronic dance music scene as it metamorphosizes over the course of twenty rough and tumble years of spinning soulful dance tracks, snorting copious amounts of blow and trying desperately manage to both finances and romances.
Deeply personal in its portrayal of artistic passion and the intimate repercussions that come with banging one’s head against a metaphoric professional wall, Hansen-Løve’s film aches with nostalgia and heartbreak...

“Forget “Touch,” “Instant Crush,” or even “Get Lucky” — the best love song on Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning 2013 album Random Access Memories is “Giorgio by Moroder,” a labyrinthine, freewheeling, and strange duet between a man and the machine he’d use to change pop music forever. The man is the legendarily mustachioed 75-year-old producer Giorgio Moroder, who, in a spoken-word segment of the Daft Punk track, waxes nostalgic for the heady early days of electronic music (“I knew that it could be a sound of the future,” he says in his thick Italian accent. “But I didn’t realize how much the impact would be”). The machine is the Moog modular synthesizer, which in the early ’70s cost about as much as a small house. (Moroder was fortunate to know a wealthy German composer who owned one and would sometimes let him come over to experiment.) Landing somewhere in the vast...

Few names in Edm carry the kind of weight that Daft Punk does. The French duo – which consists of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter – made a lasting mark on the world of dance music with 1997’s Homework, but instead of fading into obscurity like so many of the genre’s other elder statesmen, their influence has endured through their last full-length effort, Get Lucky. For this reason, it’s no wonder that the Edm community is rejoicing over murmurs that they’ve got a new album in the works.
And speaking of elder statesmen, the information comes from none other than Paul Johnson – a proper Chicago house legend in his own right whose track “Hear The Music” inspired Daft Punk to create house music in the first place. As such, it’s quite fitting that according to Johnson, the upcoming album will mark the duo’s return to house.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including The Walking Dead, Castle, Cougar Town and Scandal!
1 | Really? Not one of these Walking Dead walkers has half a brain to simply (if even accidentally) lift the latch on the gate? Also, how rotten did you feel about yourself for hoping Sasha would kill Gabriel and for Glenn to off Nicholas, after neither of them wound up shooting the villains? And is there any rational explanation for why Maggie didn’t warn her...

Here, Henry Simmons previews for TVLine the illuminating hour, makes a compelling argument to unseat Phil Coulson as S.H.I.E.L.D. director and teases the “return” of Lucy Lawless’ incredibly able agent.

We have already reviewed the major contenders thus far for this year’s Album of the Year race, but now we will take a look at the singles that will fight for Record of the Year. -Break- Over the course of the last five years, there have been 26 nominees for Record of the Year. 22 of those have hit the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and 16 have topped the chart. It is clear that this category leans towards massive, ubiquitous hits, and nothing in the last six months has been a bigger monster than "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars. The producer/singer collaboration has been resting atop the Hot 100 for the last 12 weeks and shows no signs of slowing down. It fits in perfectly with the recent retro-soul-funk-pop winners of this category ("Stay with Me," "Get Lucky," "Rolling in the Deep"). Grammys: Beyonce outshines performances by Katy Perry, Madonna,...

I didn't have enough free time in 2014 to review nearly as many of last year's prolific output of fine jazz albums as I wanted to. Here's a small step toward catching up, plus two 2015 releases (Ligeti/McDonas, The Side Project Saxophone 4tet).
Tom Varner: Nine Surprises (Tom Varner Music)
Composer and French horn player Tom Varner is indeed full of surprises, and they are not confined to the suite of that name (which, surprisingly, has 15 movements). I was most surprised by the outburst of New Orleans jazz in the last piece on the CD, "Mele," which Varner calls "a Gil Evans-influenced variation on the harmonic structure of a pop Hawaiian Christmas song." In general the music here seems highly composed -- these are not heads with strings of solos -- but still allowing for improvisation. The soloists who make the biggest impression are trombonist David Marriott and, no surprise here,...

Now, we love a good blind audition, so the show's return got us thinking about some of our favourites. 1. Max Milner
Max Milner ended up being one of our favourite Voice contestants in the first series - and not just because of the relish with which Danny O'Donoghue said his name. This was on the very first episode of The Voice UK and instantly got us interested, as Max skilfully combined 'Come Together' and 'Lose Yourself' in a mash-up that isn't just a gimmick. He's great - and Danny attempting to rap along adds some laughs, too.
2. Vince Kidd
We've all heard 'Like A Virgin' a gazillion times.

Best Pop Duo/Group isn't a new category at the Grammys, but starting in 2011 it was combined with Best Pop Collaboration, and since then it has gone to an artist collaboration every year: "Body and Soul" (Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse, 2011), "Somebody That I Used to Know" (Gotye and Kimbra, 2012), and "Get Lucky" (Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, and Nile Rodgers, 2013). When I interviewed John Oliver in the spring about the impending debut of his HBO show "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver," he admitted that they still didn't entirely have the formula locked down yet, and were experimenting with different ideas for how to structure the show. But if Oliver and his team didn't know in late April exactly how "Last Week Tonight" would best function, they figured it out in a hurry. Within an eyeblink, the show established itself not as a weekly version of Oliver's stint as "The Daily Show" fill-in host, but as a very specific, powerful, wonderful thing. It became so beloved so quickly that they could spend a good chunk of last night's first season finale with a segment whose primary purpose was to show how many famous people and TV shows wanted to be associated with what Oliver was doing: Other late night shows...
