The Walking Dead is returning for a batch of fresh episodes in about six weeks’ time, and this new promo reminds us why we should be feeling the hype. Produced last fall and made specifically to comply with Covid-19 regulations, these six anthology-style outings will feature the survivors continuing their journeys after defeating the Whisperers and take place ahead of the show’s eleventh and final season.
Unlike the previous trailer, which unveiled fresh footage, this promo features stills of the main characters, with quotes played over the top. There’s Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan), Ezekiel (Khary Payton), Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming), Princess (Paula Lazaro), Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), Aaron (Ross Marquand) and, last but not least, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). “Coming February 28,” the tagline reads. “Six new stories, one shared fate.”

Hollywood screenwriter Guy Thomas died Friday at his home in Ventura County, Calif., of a suspected heart attack, his friend Gerri Malcolm confirmed to Variety. He was 66.
Thomas was best known for his screenplay of “The Magic of Belle Isle,” directed by Rob Reiner and starring Morgan Freeman as a struggling alcoholic writer and Virginia Madsen as his neighbor. His other screenplay credits include 1980’s “Wholly Moses!” and 2001’s “Chasing Destiny.”
Before his death, Thomas was working on an alt-history science fiction Western series, “Billy Stars,” with Oscar-nominated producer David Valdes.
Born in Bay Shore, N.Y., Thomas grew up in Georgia, where he first wrote for live theater and eventually for the screen. He sold his first screenplay, “Jungle Boy,” when he was 22. While it seems like more has been discussed about the sequel to Call Me by Your Name than most independent films that have actually been made the last few years, in a time when little else brings joy, it’s worth providing the updates that do come in. Since the 2017 release of his romantic drama, Luca Guadagnino has been vocal about wanting to continue this story in a Before trilogy-esque way and it looks like things are still moving forward despite a pandemic-related hiccup.

For about 35 years now, Rob Reiner has been a director. For the first decade and a half, he was among the best in the business. Recently? Not so much. That being said, we’re focusing on the good today. Since he’s releasing a new film in the next few days, it feels apt to look at his best work. So, that’s what I’m doing. A full ranking of all of his movies is on the way, with special attention paid to his top features. I would argue that half of his output is good to very good, with five or six legitimately great works on his resume. This week, Reiner puts out his 20th feature, this time another political offering. It’s Shock and Awe, his treatise on the lies of the Bush Administration, namely in terms of going to war with Iraq. As per IMDb:...

Once more, Rose McGowan is not holding back. This time, the Twitter warrior has taken aim at one of the biggest and most enduring stars in Hollywood, Meryl Streep, as well as other non-specified actresses who are planning on wearing black in a "silent protest" of solidarity at the upcoming 75th annual Golden Globe Awards—claiming that the women who worked with her accused rapist Harvey Weinstein are part of the problem. On Saturday, the Scream star, who has been making headlines going after Weinstein over his past misdeeds, tweeted, "Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest. Once, he was a man out of time… and now he’s about to re-live that moment all over again. Following the shocking ending of Captain America #697, Steve Rogers is back on ice in Captain America #698, and it’s a brave new (and cold) world. Now, it’s up to the super soldier to assemble a new group of Howling Commandos to help him battle for this freedom.
“Everybody thought it couldn’t happen again—but it has!” teased Svp and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “Once more, Cap is a man out of time—but the new era he finds himself in is fraught with perils, personal hardships, and challenges unlike anything the shield-slinger has ever experienced before. The lead-up to our big blow-out #700 issue starts here!”

By now, I’m sure many of you know to stay after the credits whenever seeing the latest Marvel movie and, likewise, wonder where the heck everyone else is going when they begin to roll. I mean, haven’t people learned their lesson on numerous occasions since the first Iron Man flick debuted back in 2008?
Anyway, beginning in 2018, the House of Ideas intend on implementing a similar flourish in their comic books, specifically involving Wolverine. As you may have heard by now, the 616 Logan that we all love is once again among the living, having returned this fall in the Marvel Legacy one-shot. Still, much mystery surrounds the resurrected icon, particularly why he’s not dead anymore – and how he came into possession of an Infinity Stone.

Though Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead was the third in a row to feature almost non-stop smackdowns and shoot-’em-ups, battle fatigue and fatalities were beginning to be less of a concern than crises of conscience. In fact, the speed at which sides were forming (with Daryl, Morgan and Tara on Team Kill ’Em All, and Jesus, suddenly Rick and maybe Maggie on Team Live and Let Live) strongly suggested that, before the Saviors were vanquished, the allied forces would be fighting one another. Which characters wouldn’t still be around to see the conflict resolved? Read on…...

Over the years, no one has quite captured the feeling of just spending time with friends on the big screen like Richard Linklater has. It’s an amazing skill for which he doesn’t quite get the credit he deserves. Yes, he’s feted often and this skill is mentioned, but to be able to do it like he does is really something. This week, and today, actually, audiences can see Linklater once again chronicle individuals just spending time with each other, as Last Flag Flying is being released. This is a terrific movie, among the best of the year. Linklater has done it again. He’s on quite the run lately, between this, Everybody Wants Some, and of course, Boyhood. Once more, a description for those of you not aware what this one is about. The film is a sequel of sorts to The Last Detail, though familiarity with that picture is hardly required.

Coming off a weekend of more national anthem protests by NFL players and up against the much-hyped Season 8 debut and 100th episode of The Walking Dead, last night's Sunday Night Football went full Super Bowl redux but lacked the drama of the big game– and any on-field drama at all. 1.4 The Butcher's Knife Cares Not For The Lamb's Cry
What a title this episode has. If Discovery has done nothing else, it’s brought back the spirit of the original series’ episode titles, which were essentially “how grandiose and Shakespearean can we be in fewer than 10 words”. Turns out: very.
Of course, it’s not completely without meaning. There are lots of butcher’s knives in this episode, and lots of lambs crying. Metaphorically, of course. The most Star Trek thing about this episode was Burnham’s insistence that science and compassion prevail over, like, randomly shooting stuff in the face.

In the realm of quintessentially British pop culture staples, few have quite the sheer amount of content as Doctor Who. For over fifty years, the escapades of the time-traveling Doctor and his many companions have delighted audiences the world over, spanning countless serials, TV episodes, audio dramas, comic books, and novels. Unfortunately, when it comes to cinema, the good Doctor is a lot less prolific.
Despite many, many studio attempts (covered in the wonderful Now on the Big Screen by Charles Norton), only three adaptations of Doctor Who ever made it to film. The Canadian TV movie Doctor Who in the ’90s, starring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor, is commonly agreed to be a weak oddity, but that’s not what this article is about. Because in the mid-60s, the British horror studio Amicus Pictures got Peter Cushing, one of the greatest horror actors ever, to step in...

Robert Flaherty's Moana with Sound (1926 / 1980) is playing August 30 - September 29, 2017 on Mubi in most countries around the world.Slowly, slowly, the tufunga taps his comb of bone needles into the young man’s lower back. His movements are practiced and precise, each tap marking the young man for the rest of his days. The young man winces in agony, sweat pouring down his face as his relatives wipe away the blood and excess ink with tapa cloth. A witch-woman stokes a fire and burns candlenut stalks to make more soot for the tufunga’s ink. The infernal tapping continues, now on his upper back, now on his flanks, now on his knees—the most painful part of the ceremony. Outside the hut, a crowd of men dance and sing. “Courage to Moana,” they cry, “Courage to Moana!

In the age of branding and franchises, every existing story has added value. But not every film is fit for TV.
The challenge of adapting movies to a new medium is a tricky one with no clear-cut way to do it. Many new series credit “Fargo” as their benchmark, citing its tone and setting as inspiration for creating a new world around the best parts of what came before. That’s all well and good, but there are as many failed attempts to replicate Noah Hawley’s strategy as successes.
Similarly, some carbon copies — using the same characters and plot points as the preceding movie — are just as good, if not better than their cinematic predecessors. Because any way can work, many various attempts have been made. There’s no right way to do it, but there are a lot of wrong ways; as evidenced by the growing pile of canceled shows based on movies.

1. “Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later” (available August 4)
Why Should I Watch It? Because you can’t resist. The core cast of “Wet Hot American Summer” is as irresistible as a cast can get, including Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, David Hyde Pierce, Christopher Meloni, Elizabeth Banks, Molly Shannon, H. Jon Benjamin, and Ken Marino. Throw in the new members who joined up for Netflix’s prequel season — Kristen Wiig, Josh Charles, Chris Pine, Lake Bell — and this is a comedy dream team. The only problem facing creators (and actors) David Wain and Michael Showalter is finding enough time to highlight each and every one of their talented team, especially with even more actor additions for “10 Years Later” (like Adam Scott!).

George A. Romero rarely had it easy. From the beginning, he faced obstacles to getting his vision on screen and condemnation once he succeeded in doing so. It took him 20 years to make his way into the big leagues, yet faced frustrating interference once he did. Yet today, the work endures. He never abandoned his vision, even when it prevented him from having an easier time of the process, and his movies, once attacked as grotesque exploitation, are now properly celebrated as landmarks of cinematic horror.
Indeed, Romero not invented more than a new and enduring kind of zombie movie when he directed “Night of the Living Dead” 50 years ago; in many ways, he invented independent horror cinema as we know it. There had been lots of off-Hollywood fright films before “Night” hit screens in 1968, of course—even some showcasing graphic if cheaply executed gore, like the Herschell Gordon Lewis flicks.

Written by the director of “Priests” , directed by Lim Dae-wong of “To Sir, With Love”, featuring Yunjin Kim in her first role after 2014, and with a concept very close to that of J-horror, “House of the Disappeared” had all the collateral to become a blockbuster, which I am sure it will, eventually. Let us take a closer look at it though.

You've seriously got to watch this fan-made Japanese-style opening for Spider-Man: Homecoming from Mike Dent. He uses footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming and cut it together in the style of Toei’s 1978 Spider-Man show, with the exact same music. It's a delightfully fun time and I love the cheesiness of the whole thing.
If you're familiar with the Japanese Spider-Man show, you'll be happy to know that Dent made sure to splice in a moment featuring Tom Holland’s Spidey summoning the giant mech robot, Leopardon. Here's what the creator had to say:

There’s nothing like a good mystery, and HBO’s Blackout (1985) has a central premise that’s hard to deny: You survive a car crash, but have no memory of who you were before. Until, 7 years later, someone shows up and insinuates that you were a man who murdered his entire family and then fled. Now, could you go about your life, or would you want to know the truth? And if you were a killer, would that impulse return?
HBO’s original programming was still in its infancy, so the film, which debuted on Sunday, July 28th, plays as a barely more graphic version of a network offering, which is fine anyway; Blackout offers enough story and characterization to diminish any desire for extra blood or sleaze.
Once more, to our faux TV Guide:

This August, “The Defenders” are finally banding together to clean up New York City.
Now that Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) have all starred in their individual series, it’s time to create the supergroup to take out the bad guys in the long-awaited culmination of the Marvel series on Netflix. The streaming service released a new poster today to tease the battle to come this summer.

War is being waged for control of the Big Apple, and while details are scarce so far, it seems that Sigourney Weaver’s character is going to be one of the main antagonists, following in the footsteps of the likes of evildoer such as Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). The Oscar nominee will play Alexandra, the sophisticated and way too smart head of an ancient organization who are up to no good. Also on the bad guy front are the Hand, a group of assassins who not only have ridiculous martial arts skills but also have a pesky habit of coming back from the dead. In fact, they even resurrected Elektra (Elodie Yung), the ex-girlfriend of Daredevil, aka Matthew Murdock.
The series will also bring back Daredevil’s mentor Stick (Scott Glen), Matt’s legal partner Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss), Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor), Malcolm Ducasse (Eka Darville), Misty Knight (Simone Missick), and arguably the best part of “Iron Fist,” Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick). Oh yeah, Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) will also be back because she’s in all of them.
Check out the individual moving posters and the badass, stylish team poster below feating all of The Defenders giving their best perfume ad stare (except for Daredevil, who’s wearing shades):

Before Chadwick Boseman becomes a Hollywood superstar with the release of Marvel’s “Black Panther” in February 2018, he’ll bring the historic rise of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to the big screen in the awards season biopic “Marshall.” The drama is directed by Reginald Hudlin, marking his first feature in 15 years, and focuses on Marshall long before he would go on to become the first African-American to take the role of Supreme Court Justice.

“Marshall” is set in 1941 and follows the young lawyer as he defends a black chauffeur (Emmy-winner Sterling K.Brown) against sexual assault and murder charges. Marshall was partnered with Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young Jewish lawyer who had never tried a case before. Kate Hudson co-stars.
Distributor Open Road Films has already locked in an October 13 release date for the drama, which means it’s likely “Marshall” pops up on the fall film festival circuit. Open Road took both “Spotlight” and “Bleed For This” to Telluride in year’s past, with the former going on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

It’s hard to argue with the idea that 1984’s Ghostbusters is a certified classic. It’s stood the test of time – and will continue to – not merely because of its once-dazzling special effects or laugh quotient but because, underneath it all, it has a big, beating heart that’s granted it an everlasting charm.
It’s clear in every frame and every line delivery that everyone involved is simply having fun, more intent on having you laugh along with them than simply force-feeding you telegraphed punch lines. It’s a love letter to the paranormal, to campfire horror stories, and to goofy science fiction that never needlessly overindulges itself in the genres it adores, remaining accessible for anyone and everyone, powered less by its actual narrative and more by the fact that its characters are genuinely lovable.
Even beyond that, it’s an immensely quotable film with iconic imagery...

His name is Dougie Jones. He has a beer gut, a bad haircut, an even worse selection of sportjackets and a penchant for adultery in vacant development housing. And he does not exist.

Nearly 20 years after directing his debut feature, Southie, veteran actor John Shea (Agent X, An Invisible Sign) steps behind the camera again. Once more focusing on the insidious influence of Boston's criminal underworld, Shea assembles many of the requisite elements of a contemporary crime drama, but orchestrates them so chaotically that audiences may be put off by the film's unwelcome onslaught of stale genre techniques.
Shea knows well enough to lead off with an action sequence, as Boston police detective James Doyle (Eric Dane) responds to a 911 call reporting a hostage situation. Along with his partner (and girlfriend) Maggie...

I wouldn’t have wanted to be in Tom King’s shoes after the last issue. After delivering a gargantuan of a book, whatever followed it would always pale in comparison. In many ways, this is true of Batman #19, which isn’t quite as memorable as its predecessor; however, it does give us something else we crave: villains. Lots and lots of villains.
With Batman licking his wounds, the story revolves around Bane as he makes his way through Arkham Asylum, beating everyone in his path as he searches for his adversary and Psycho-Pirate. Now, get this: the Caped Crusader’s the one who let the inmates out and armed them to battle the Venom-addicted monster. How insane is that? As expected, the villains all fall as the Dark Knight prepares for one last rumble in the Arkham jungle with the beast.

Director E.L. Nobody knew The WB was releasing one of the best television series ever on March 10, 1997.
Yet on that date, on a network no longer in existence, Buffy the Vampire Slayer the series was born, changing genre television forever.
We're celebrating with some of our personal favorite episodes and why they've stuck with us.

I've watched the complete series several times since (Thanks, Netflix!), but I still connect so much to the two episodes from Season 2, "Surprise" & "Innocence. Grrr arggg! Into every generation an excellent TV show is born: One show in all the world. The Chosen One.
It’s been 20 years since Buffy Summers, Mr. Pointy, The Bronze, and Giles’ always-smudged spectacles graced our small screens, and the world has never been the same (mostly because she saved it… a lot).
There were plenty of quips (“Out. For. A. Walk. B**ch.”), tears (Spike’s undying devotion, sob), and frights (bunnies, plus demons and stuff), but Buffy the Vampire Slayer was so much more than that.
The Joss Whedon masterpiece created several feminist icons, spoke to addiction struggles, portrayed the first lesbian sex scene on broadcast television, showed that vampires were sexy long before Twilight and made it ok to wear pink leather pants in public… well, sort of.
Whether you were Team Angel, Team Spike or kind of just wanted Giles and Joyce to get together, the show had...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best concept episode that’s been on television?
Sonia Saraiya (@soniasaraiya), Variety
I have to admit a recency bias, I guess, but “BoJack Horseman’s” “Fish Out of Water” has stuck with me in a way that no other concept episode has — a gimmick that didn’t feel gimmicky but instead desperately necessary for the forward motion of the episode. It’s not quite fair, because “Community,” for example, is comprised almost entirely of concept episodes, and it’s hard to disagree with how much “Buffy’s” “Hush” and “Once More, with Feeling” inspired other, later shows. But “Fish Out of Water” was...

In "Attack on Central City" Jesse Quick and Harry Wells returned to Central City and Earth-1. Sadly, by the end of the hour only one of them ended up sticking around. Harry, the true Harrison Wells in many fans' opinion, went back to his home Earth, leaving Jesse behind to start a new life with Wally West. Once more, Flash fans are saddled with H.R. Wells replacing Harry and unlike the first time, there is absolutely no reason for it. Harry belongs on Earth-1.

Fashionista finds you back in Austin after Red White and Blue. What excites you about Austin so much? Could Fashionista have been set anywhere else?

With Tim League (exec producer), Paul Knauss (co-producer) and Karen Hallford (casting director) I’ve got a great bunch of friends who also happen to be great collaborators and they form the core of both films’ Austin based crew and most probably without them neither films would have happened.
