Chris Pine is clueless when it comes to “The Princess Diaries 3,” which Variety confirmed earlier this month is officially in development at Disney. The “Star Trek” favorite made his film acting debut in the 2004 sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.” He played Nicholas, the slow-burning love interest of Anne Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis. The film ended with the two characters coupled up, so “The Princess Diaries 3” will have to star Pine or be forced to explain Nicholas’ absence.
“I don’t know anything,” Pine said on “Today With Hoda & Jenna” when the topic of the third “Princess Diaries” came up. “Call Disney! Call Bob Iger!”
“Today” co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager expressed shock over Pine being out of the loop on the sequel. “You don’t know anything?” Hager asked.
“The answer is I’ve gotta see,” Pine added. “I don’t know anything about it.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

“Becoming newly anointed knights in the kingdom of Dame Donna Langley is an honour and privilege we do not take lightly,” added Rogen, Goldberg and Weaver. “We pledge to win grand box office battles alongside Peter Cramer, Erik Baiers and...

Since January 2, the four motion picture guilds comprising makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, art directors, and sound mixers have announced their nominations for the year’s best work in their respective fields. While there has been plenty of variation in their choices, all four organizations have shown solidarity in recognizing three films: “Barbie,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer”. All of these rank among our top 10 Best Picture candidates, with “Oppenheimer” in first place, “Barbie” in third, and “Maestro” in sixth.
Six of the remaining nine guilds will be heard from over the next week, starting with both the actors and directors on Jan. 10. They will be followed in order by the cinematographers (Jan. 11), producers (Jan. 12), sound editors (Jan. 15), and visual effects artists (Jan. 16), all of whom will reveal their awards finalists during the Oscar nominations voting period.

Hollywood’s efforts to improve diversity among filmmakers were disparaged as “performative acts” in a new report detailing the still-scant directing opportunities afforded to women and people of color.
Per Variety, the new “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” report from Dr. Stacy L. Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that, of the 116 directors attached to the 100 highest-grossing films of 2023, just 14 were women. That 12.1 percent figure is up from last year’s nine percent — though it’s not even a 10 percent increase from the 4.5 percent of female directors...

Warner Bros. Discovery is projecting huge losses from the impact of writer and actor strikes, but “Barbie” is still around to help them pay bills. It’s hardly news that as Greta Gerwig’s smash hit starts its initial post-theater platform release, it’s #1 on PVOD charts. The real story: that it’s doing so with a hefty premium price.
Gerwig’s #1 theatrical hit worldwide for 2023 (which will end up with around $1.5 billion in theatrical returns) is now renting on PVOD for $24.99, with the option to add it to your digital library permanently for $29.99. Studios recover 80 percent from revenues returned for these transactions, less a small slice for the carrier. That means Warner Bros. Discovery will recoup around $20 for each “Barbie” rental, $25 for each download. It’s a bonanza.
As always, how much actual money is involved with these transactions is not known, but if five million domestic homes rent the film,...

Unlike their just opened “Haunted Mansion”, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” might ultimately break even. If it does, its performance on PVOD could be make or break.
Of note, suggesting Disney’s much-revised strategy, this release came after nine weekends in theaters (60 days) and ahead of future Disney+ streaming.
With a reported production cost of $250 million and the usual added expense, its ultimate worldwide gross of $600 million, though otherwise impressive, means post-theatrical revenues need to be substantial. Opening #1 on all charts its initial week is a good first step.
What it will need is multiple weeks of strong play beyond a default first week #1. Last week “The Flash” (Warner Bros.), a far smaller performer in theaters, did debut at the top. But this week it’s only #2 on one chart (Vudu), while third and fourth elsewhere. The bounty for PVOD comes from long term, and high end charts (with the...

Stop the presses. We don’t need the full weekend results to report huge news.
Two non-franchise films began their massive releases Thursday with partial-day shows, bolstered by stellar reviews and top-tier directors, in a summer that lagged more than five percent behind last year. The result: A combined gross of $32.8 million.
“Barbie” (Warner Bros. Discovery), with a 3 p.m. start and shorter running time, took in $22.3 million. “Oppenheimer” (Universal), which began at 5 p.m., runs three hours; it benefits from higher-priced premium tickets while being limited by lesser total capacity. It grossed $10.5 million.
Results like these beg for hyperboles, and deserve them. However, focusing on the eye-popping numbers risks missing an even bigger point: Audiences are stating, in no uncertain terms, that IP and connected universes and sequels are not going to save theaters. The secret lies in investing in risky projects based on compelling ideas that challenge filmmakers and their audiences.

‘Mission: Impossible’ Provides a Summer Box Office Dead Reckoning: Sequels Are Making Audiences Wary
Maybe Tom Cruise won’t be playing Ethan Hunt at 80.
“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” (Paramount) grossed $80 million in five days in the U.S./Canada, with a worldwide total of $235 million. That’s needed money for theaters and stronger than expected Thursday-to-Sunday results elevated the gross from what some thought might be as low as $70 million.
With its A Cinemascore, this seems like a film that might not suffer the falloff experienced this summer by several other multi-hundred million dollar productions. Less clear is whether it can maintain the stellar longer run of “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” in 2018.

However, “Fallout” was released in late July with minor August competition. Next weekend, “Dead Reckoning” faces “Barbie” (Warner Bros. Discovery), which is expected to open way over $100 million, and “Oppenheimer,” which will gross less while absorbing almost all of the premium screens currently occupied by Tom Cruise.

“Joy Ride,” the raunchy girl’s trip comedy starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu opens this week.
It’s the first studio movie to feature a predominantly Asian cast since Marvel’s “Shang-Chi: The Legend of the 10 Rings” in 2021, and the first since “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2018 to feature Asian female leads.
In the film, lawyer Audrey Sullivan (Park) is tasked with securing a business deal in China. She brings along her childhood friend Lolo (Cola) as her translator, as Audrey was adopted by white parents. They’re joined by Deadeye (Wu), Lolo cousin. While in China, they meet up with Audrey’s college roommate Kat, a successful actress. Lolo encourages Ashley to search for her birth mother, and hijinks — with an emphasis on “high” — ensue.

During a recent press conference in support of FX’s riveting six-part Great Expectations limited series, Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) admitted she’s never read Charles Dickens’ classic novel. Despite that, Colman found being offered the opportunity to play the mysterious and manipulative Miss Havisham too enticing to pass up.
“I’d seen adaptations on the telly before, so I knew roughly who she was and everything,” explained Colman. “I thought ‘Oh, she sounds great. I’d love to get my teeth into her.’”
Colman’s been keeping incredibly busy with starring roles in Joyride, The Lost Daughter, and Empire of Light. The latter film earned the Oscar winner her third Oscar nomination. Colman was ready to take some time off until she read the Great Expectations script by showrunner and executive producer Steven Knight.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Freddie Prinze Jr had such a hard time shooting I Know What You Did Last Summer that he almost quit the film.
The Scooby Doo actor made his big screen debut in the 1997 slasher film, which was directed by Jim Gillespie.
