Netflix has released its viewership figures for the second half of 2024, and they provide a (possibly) interesting bit of insight into its subscribers’ tastes.

The most obvious take-away is that Netflix customers really like their thrillers; festive airport nailbiter Carry-On, starring Taron Edgerton, continues to be one of the most successful original films the streaming firm has released in years. Despite releasing right at the end of last year, it was still the platform’s most-watched movie with 137.3m views.

In January, Carry-On was Netflix’s fifth most-watched movie of all time. A few weeks on, and it’s climbed to the third position with a total of 169.2m views, placing it just behind Don’t Look Up (171.4m) and Red Notice (230.9m). Releasing a high-concept,...

Netflix is giving analysts and subscribers alike another look into what audiences watched on the streamer in 2024. The latest “What We Watched” report includes viewership data for all shows and movies in the Netflix library over the second half of 2024, and it includes some fascinating insights about the streamer. Perhaps unsurprisingly, “Squid Game” — which released its second season late in December — was the most watched show in the second half of they year, while Taron Egerton airplane thriller “Carry-On” was the most viewed film on the service.

You know Netflix is popular, and you know several different series, especially original series, have an immense global appeal. In the second half of 2024 alone, 20 series had at least 25 million views each. 77 movies had at least 25 million views, based on the results Netflix released this week.

But one series stands out above all others. That would be Squid Game Season 2. It led all series in views (and also amassed 619.9 million viewing hours). The magic is that the second season was not released until December 26, which means, of course, that Squid Game got all those views in six days. Clearly, people were ready for the release.

The show coming in second might be a bit more surprising. The first season of The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman, finished in second place. Sure, we knew it was popular, but that popular? Now we know.

Netflix has released its latest six-month trove of viewing data, and if the compilation of more than 15,000 series and movies points to anything, it’s how big a phenomenon Squid Game is.

Season two of the Korean hit was the most watched series worldwide in the second half of 2024, in both Netflix’s preferred view metric (86.5 million, measured by dividing viewing hours by running time) and total viewing time (619.9 million hours). Remarkably, it did all that in just six days — season two premiered on Dec. 26.

In under a week, Squid Game drew 69.5 million more viewing hours than the second-place show in that measure — Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which accumulated 550.4 million hours in three-plus months after its Sept. 19 premiere. In views, Squid Game had 11.4 million more than The Perfect Couple (75.1 million), which also debuted in September and has a running time about two hours shorter than that of Squid Game.

“Carry-On” and “Squid Game” Season 2 were Netflix’s most-watched movie and show, respectively, during the second half of 2024.

Despite only debuting on Dec. 5, “Carry-On” logged 137.3 million views during the month, and ranked as the most-watched movie on the streamer from July to December 2024. The streamer shared the metrics in its bi-annual data dump. Viewership for “Carry-On” exceeded that of “The Union,” which was the second most-watched movie during the interval with 131.1 million views, as well as “Rebel Ridge,” which took third place with 129 million views.

Viewership for “Carry-on,” “The Union” and “Rebel Ridge” well exceeded that of other movies on the streamer, with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” coming in fourth place with 97.1 million views while “Our Little Secret,” which was released in late November, took fifth place with 81.3 million views.

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Netflix has released another six months of viewership data, giving insight into the 94B hours of content that the streamer’s subscribers watched in the second half of 2024.

Despite debuting on December 26, Squid Game Season 2 led the pack for television, amassing 87M views in just six days, which is a massive showing for the follow up to Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. Within 12 days, Season 2 had become Netflix’s No. 2 most popular non-English series of all time.

The Perfect Couple had a much longer runway to come in second place, generating 75M views from its September 5 release through the end of the year. While it didn’t do quite as well as Ryan Murphy’s first Monster outing, The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story came in third among all series with 70M views.

2024 was a busy year for Netflix Games, with over 40 new arrivals in total, although we have begun to see the first set of Netflix Games leave the service, headlined by Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City. That brings Netflix’s library of titles to well over 100 games on mobile, with a further dozen available only on its Cloud Beta service. That list is set to continue growing throughout 2024 and the years to come. Per Netflix, as of February 2024, they have over 90 games in development at their studios and externally.

Nicole Kidman made a vow in 2017 to work with a woman director every 18 months. To say she has made good on that promise would be an understatement. The Oscar winner has teamed up with a women director either as a producer or as an actor 19 times over the last eight years, with more female-directed projects already in the pipeline.

Speaking in a new interview with Time magazine, Kidman explained that one of her reasons behind making the vow is a double standard that women directors face. These filmmakers are under pressure to “be perfect” when their movies get funded and there’s no room for error. Whereas male directors are more likely to get a chance to rebound, female directors are knocked down if they don’t deliver a perfect movie.

“It can be changed,” Kidman said, “but it can only be changed by actually being in the films of women.

Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was originally set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.

The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned. The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both films.

It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie-goers.

Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to have approved of his son, Patrick going n*de in ‘that’ scene in the premiere of The White Lotus. However, the creepiness does not end there as the main Ratliff family seems to have more dark secrets in store, including a possibly inc*stous angle with Patrick’s character’s brother, Lochlan.

Lochlan is played by Sam Nivola in the series, who also reportedly has famous parents. The son of Alessandro Nivola and Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Mortimer, Sam has been in films like Maestro and White Noise. Apart from her son being in the show, Emily Mortimer also seems to have another connection to The White Lotus.

In case you missed it, Tyler Spindel is behind this new rom-com where Amy Schumer headlines as a woman who is jealous of her friend’s upcoming pregnancy and decides to get in on the attention train by wearing a fake baby bump. Her plans ultimately unravel, though, as everyone becomes suspicious, and she falls for the man of her dreams.

The movie also features an original soundtrack that’s provided by Rupert Gregson-Williams, who is best known for working on projects like Aquaman, Hacksaw Ridge, and most recently for Netflix, The Perfect Couple. Other Netflix projects include Back to the Outback, The Crown and Fatherhood.

A followup series is nearing a pilot order from Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to star, reprising her signature role as Buffy Summers, sources said. Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, a self-professed lifelong Buffy fan, is set to direct the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face). The reboot hails from Buffy the Vampire Slayer studio 20th Television and Disney sibling Searchlight TV where Zhao has been under a first-look deal.

Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series. It is unclear yet whether other original Buffy cast members would return; that is considered likely.

It was confirmed last year that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are in talks to reprise their roles for a sequel to the 1998 fantasy Practical Magic. Akiva Goldsman will return to write the script. Alice Hoffman, who wrote the original novel in 1995, also published a sequel called The Book Of Magic in 2021.

Based on the 1995 novel by Hoffman, Practical Magic put a slightly different spin in the romantic drama. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, whose family has been plagued for generations by a curse that kills any man they fall in love with. They have to use their magic to destroy the spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend.

The film also starred Goran Visnjic, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest and Aidan Quinn.

The project, created by Bekah Brunstetter based on the bestselling novel by The Perfect Couple author Elin Hilderbrand, had been in the works at the streamer for about a year under an overall deal Sue Naegle and Ali Krug signed with the Universal Studio Group unit for their Dinner Party Productions. The series green light was secured by Garner coming on board as star and executive producer.

Peacock has ordered a series adaptation of the Elin Hilderbrand novel “The Five-Star Weekend” with Jennifer Garner attached to star, Variety has learned.

The project was first reported to be in development at Peacock in April 2024 as part Sue Naegle and Ali Krug’s overall deal with UCP under their Dinner Party Productions banner.

The official description of the series states:

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are set to reprise their roles as witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens from the 1998 supernatural romantic comedy.

Bier has worked with both actresses in the past: Bullock on Bird Box and Kidman on “The Undoing” and “The Perfect Couple.”

Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original, is returning to pen the script. Bullock and Kidman are producing alongside returning producer Denise Di Novi.

The film features Fahy (The White Lotus and The Perfect Couple) as Violet, a widowed mom who’s trying to get back out on the dating scene. She goes on her first date in years at a fancy restaurant with Sklenar’s (It Ends with Us and Yellowstone: 1923) character, Henry.
