Sam Quah brings real artistry to a story of buried guilt and conspicuous violence, but his neat contrivances tie things up rather too easily
Sam Quah’s Chinese remake of his own Malaysian thriller from 2022 is a film literally dripping in sin. It’s set in 2006 during the clean-up after the tsunami, with the ceiling at the local high school leaking due to the incessant rain. After the pupils punt origami boats out on the college lake, mute loner Tong (Shengdi Wang) is smeared in glue and tortured by the resident girl gang. So if liquid-sloshing Quah hasn’t seen Hideo Nakata’s Dark Water, by the time a mackintosh-sporting psycho is dicing up the bullies it’s clear he must be a fan of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Tong’s mother, willowy school cleaner Li Han (Janine Chang), is one suspect on the police’s list...

‘Lost’ Is Found
Specialty distributor, Trinity CineAsia is releasing China’s summer blockbuster “Lost in the Stars” in the U.K and Ireland on some 30 screens from Friday.
“I was fortunate to watch the film when it opened in China and once I saw it I just knew we had to have it,” said Cedric Behrel of Trinity CineAsia. “‘Lost In The Stars’ is a very clever, uncanny thrill of a ride that harks back to classic Hitchcock and any noteworthy thriller since – the master himself had in fact once optioned the rights to the same story. We organized the fastest turnaround premiere known to man and we’ve been delighted by the reactions to the early previews. It epitomizes the best of what new Chinese cinema can bring to audiences.”

China’s theatrical box office fell to a new low over the weekend as anti-covid restrictions forces thousands of cinemas to close.
Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway showed that nationwide box office across the world’s most populous country amounted to just 10.5 million. That was the lowest scoring weekend of 2022 and means the year-to-date cumulative at 2.42 billion is now running some 28 below last’s equivalent figure.
Major cities in China are currently operating under a range of restrictions that range from citywide lockdown (Shanghai) to so-called static management (Suzhou) which also involve government-mandated restrictions on entertainment.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” held on as the top film for a second weekend, but with receipts of just RMB19.1 million (3 million). After ten days in mainland Chinese cinemas, the film has amassed RMB93.3 million (14.6 million).

Audiences will be rooting for a working-class family to get away with manslaughter in “Sheep Without a Shepherd,” a gripping Chinese crime thriller set in small-town Thailand. Centered on an ordinary guy whose extraordinary film knowledge holds the key to keeping his family out of jail, this cleverly scripted item marks an auspicious feature debut for Malaysia-born, Taipei-based director Sam Quah. After grossing a stellar $191 million domestically in late 2019 and mid-2020 rerelease, “Sheep” ought to attract plenty of viewers in limited U.S. cinemas from July 30 and on streaming from Aug. 6.
Setting what must be some sort of record for the most remakes in the shortest time, “Sheep” is the sixth version of “Drishyam” (2013), a Malayaman-language Indian hit written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. Remakes in Kannada, Telegu, Tamil and Hindi have followed in India, along with a Sinhalese production in Sri Lanka. With its punchy depiction of ordinary people...

Japanese filmmaker Kenji Uchida hit the jackpot when he wrote and directed in 2012 “Key of Life”, a clever, enjoyable and very applicable story of identity-swap between a looser and a sleek professional assassin, played by the star Teruyuki Kagawa. The film in fact, beside winning a bunch of awards, had a South Korean remake in 2015, “Lucky Key” starring the uber-popular Yoo Hae-jin in the lead role, and this year, a Chinese reboot opened successfully across China on Spring Festival (Chinese New Year Holiday), one of the busiest moviegoing periods in China, grossing a record 7.8 billion yuan only in the festival days. This newest big budget version is directed by Xiaozhi Rao after his 2018’s “A Cool Fish” featuring no other than Hong Kong icon and superstar Andy Lau (also credited as executive producer ) and Xiao Yang, recently seen in “Sheep Without A Shepherd”.

In recent days, we've reported on how the heavy hand of the mainland Chinese government has affected the Hong Kong film industry, notably with the incendiary short doc Do Not Split and the dramatic feature Better Days. Good films from the Mainland are still emerging, however; case in point, Sheep Without a Shepherd. Our own Andrew Mack saw it as part of the Fantasia film festival last summer and was energized and impressed, as he noted in his review: "Quah directed a crime drama thriller with emphasis on the thrills. Sheep Without a Shepherd is a genuine thrill-ride that does not ask you to choose sides, you know who to cheer for in the opening moments of the film. Subsequent actions only cement that before...

Artsploitation Films have announced that they have picked up the great crime drama from Chinea, Sheep Without a Shepherd. They're planning a streaming and DVD release of the film on March 23rd. This debut feature film from Malaysian director Sam Quah was a massive hit in China and a standout at Fantasia last year. I used the words 'thrill-ride' too many times in my review from the festival but I truly meant it. Sheep Without a Shepherd is an honest to goodness thrill-ride of a crime drama. An -ism like 'thrill-ride' gets tossed around a lot but here we truly mean it. Few directors knock it out of the park their first time around yet on his first time directing a feature film...

With the beginning of the pandemic taking place in the Sinophone world, the already tumultuous circumstances of the area reached a level pretty close to eruption. However, as it usual the case with sociopolitical instability, the creative forces of the artists emerged once more triumphant, ending up in a number of films that could easily be described as great. Taiwan cemented its place as one of the countries with the most intriguing cinema, China continued with its festival-appealing, European style movies along with a number of blockbusters, while Hong Kong took a definite step back, with the political situation in combination with the pandemic leaving an already declining industry in a rather bad situation, with very few, but occasionally notable, productions overall.
Without further ado, here are the best Sinophone films of 2020, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2019, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them.

Zhang Yimou’s censored film “One Second” apparently now finds itself in the Chinese government’s good books: it has been given pride of place as the opener at the government-run Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival.
The film was initially set to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2019. But its treatment of the still sensitive Cultural revolution period is believed to have been its undoing. It was abruptly pulled from the festival due to “technical reasons,” a common euphemism for censorship, in one of the highest profile cases of Chinese state intervention seen abroad in recent years.
Now, after apparent reshoots and, at long last, government approvals for a Nov. 27 commercial theatrical release, it is set to debut at the festival in Xiamen city on Nov. 25.

The Viola Davis-starring 2018 heist thriller “Widows” is set to hit China on Oct. 16.
It will go up against five other local titles releasing that day, but none of note. Competitive Chinese films have either timed their release for this week during the National Day holiday, or are waiting for a later time when those titles blow over, thereby leaving a bit of a gap in the schedule. Chinese authorities informally ban foreign films from releasing during the holiday as a protectionist measure.

China is a big market for Bollywood, with several Hindi-language releases doing very well at the box-office there. All signs pointed to a local remake from the Chinese industry coming soon and the first one that won out the 2015 Ajay Devgn and Tabu starring “Drishyam”, itself a remake of the Malayalam language film by the same name which has already been redone in different languages across India. Remaking this particular story over other popular titles was an interesting gamble, but one that really paid dividends, because it did exceptionally well. It opened at #1 on the box office and despite of releasing only in December, it managed to break into the top 10 highest grossing films on 2019 in China and ended up as the last box office hit in the country before everything shut down thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
