Screambox has all sorts of goodies hitting the streaming service this month, including the newly-released Pet Sematary-inspired Lizzie Lazarus, not to mention several Giallo movies. They join last month’s release of the incredibly timely Street Trash remake and the nightmarish exorcism drama Deus Irae.
Gorehounds will eat well with Screambox’s double helping of Blood Feast. Herschell Gordon Lewis’s landmark splatter film drops on January 31 while Marcel Walz‘s recent remake starring stars Robert Rusler (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2) and Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) is now streaming!
The new take on 1963’s Blood Feast (read our review) is dripping with copious amounts of the red stuff; our own Chris Coffel called it “a delicious splatterfest that will have horror hounds going back for seconds.”

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers for Smile 2, which is currently in theaters
Smile 2 has received a positive welcome from the audience just like its predecessor. Parker Finn decided to go big with the sequel, setting his story in a big city and casting Naomi Scott in the lead role as world-famous pop star Skye Riley. The Smile Entity, a large skinless humanoid creature, appears to be the only shared aspect in both films, with the exception of Kyle Gallner returning briefly as Joel.

In an attempt to pass on the curse, Joel tries to kill a drug dealer with another dealer as a witness. However, drug dealer Lewis ends up being the inadvertent witness and flees the scene, after inheriting the curse. Skye, who is traumatized by a car crash that killed her boyfriend, relies on Lewis for her Vicodin supply.

A fascinating theory suggests Palpatine could have been artificially created by Plagueis' manipulations to serve as a weapon of mass imbalance in the Force. Anakin's destiny as the Chosen One was to specifically defeat Palpatine to restore the balance. Palpatine's resurrection and the Sith's perpetual desire for power led to Palpatine becoming a living imbalance in the Force, which Rey eventually corrected and brought back balance (just as Anakin had).
A new Star Wars theory about Palpatine's origins would rewrite canon in some pretty fascinating ways. Serving as the biggest villain in the entire galaxy far, far away, this secret Sith Lord transformed a galactic Republic that has lasted for millennia and turned it into his very own Empire. Having been so powerful that he was able to overcome death itself, a new theory suggests a major twist in the origins of Palpatine in the Star Wars canon.

Steven Spielberg helped Daniel Day-Lewis score another Oscar win after casting the actor in his critically acclaimed project Lincoln. However, before Day-Lewis, Neeson was heavily sought after for the role. But Neeson quickly had an epiphany that Lincoln wasn’t for him.
How Liam Neeson turned down ‘Lincoln’ Liam Neeson | Kate Green/Getty Images
Neeson almost collaborated with Spielberg again after their Schindler’s List days. The actor was strongly considered to play Abraham Lincoln in the titular feature. But this went beyond just small talks about doing the feature. In a 2010 interview with GQ, Neeson went as far as to read the script for the movie.
“Steven had approached me to play it—f***, it must be ten years ago. Sent me a script, and I was like, ‘God.’ And he told me roughly when he might want to shoot it, so I started researching. I maybe did four years’ worth of research,...

A postscript to this philosophical effort explains that an unknown Oxford don visited Sigmund Freud’s London home shortly before his death in 1939. What if, the film asks, it had been C.S. Lewis? Well, then we might have had a conversation a little like this confection — although probably considerably sharper.
Freud (Anthony Hopkins) was a prominent atheist: not that that protected him from persecution by the Nazis for his Jewish roots, driving him to flee Vienna to London with his family. Matthew Goode’s Lewis, meanwhile, lost and rediscovered his faith after the early death of his mother and the trauma of World War I. As a second World War looms, both men reckon with its cost and their own regrets. Like One Night In Miami or Mary Queen Of Scots, this therefore uses an imaginary meeting to explore both men’s lives and work, but somehow to less than satisfying effect.

Disney and Bob Iger have received the support of the independent proxy advisory company Glass Lewis in its ongoing proxy battle. Glass Lewis recommended that Disney shareholders vote for the 12 Disney-selected director nominees in a report released on Monday.

Retired English actor Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors in cinema’s history. Although picky, the actor won numerous accolades throughout his career. Most of his performances, if not all, have been critically acclaimed. The proof of this fact is that he has three Academy Awards, making him the actor with the most Academy Awards for Best Actor.
Back to the part about him being picky, Day-Lewis has rejected roles in some great movies. For instance, he rejected the lead role in 1993’s Philadelphia and the role of the vampire Lestat in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire.
Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot
Another such role that Day-Lewis reportedly rejected was Batman. Zack Snyder once approached the actor for a role in Man of Steel, and it was not until much later that he revealed which role it was.

Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Past Session. Here’s the trailer.
Anthony Hopkins is no stranger to playing psychiatrists, though this role is unlikely to involve fava beans and a nice Chianti. In fact, this time, it looks as though dinner is off the menu entirely.
Freud’s Last Session, based on the play of the same name by Mark St Germain, itself based on the book The Question Of God by Dr Armand M Nicholi, Jr, imagines a scenario wherein Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, invites Chronicles Of Narnia author Cs Lewis, here played by Matthew Goode, over for a debate about the existence of God.
Sounds like just the kind of fodder that actors love getting their teeth into, and the acclaim for the play itself suggests that it’s no chore for audiences either. The adaptation into a film should build on that,...

The Barbie film-maker is set to direct adaptations of at least two of Cs Lewis’s fantasy novels for the streaming giant – will she do better than the last ones?
You might think Greta Gerwig an unusual choice to take on Cs Lewis’s Narnia stories for Netflix. And at first glance, few would argue with you. Beginning her career as an actor in mumblecore movies such as Baghead, Hannah Takes the Stairs and Greenberg before transitioning into indie cinema as a film-maker with Lady Bird, Gerwig became a household name with this year’s $1.4bn-grossing, conservative-baiting, slyly subversive comedy fantasy Barbie, a movie that will be remembered as the most topically adroit cinematic event of 2023, despite ostensibly being about a child’s plastic toy.
So what on earth might Gerwig do with Aslan, Eustace Grubb and Mr Tumnus the faun? Gerwig is down to make at least two from...

Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.
In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.
“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”
“Dearest Bill, Somewhere you’ll be singing Let It Be Me and challenging heavenly choirs to look into your Ebony Eyes,” Andrew Lloyd Webber tweeted. “The theatre will...

Now that Endeavour has ended for good, there are a few obvious places for fans to go in search of more of the crossword-solving, bitter-drinking, classics-quoting Oxford detective. The first are Colin Dexter’s novels, which established the character. The second is the original ITV show Inspector Morse based on those books, which starred John Thaw in the title role for 33 feature-length episodes between 1987 and 2000. Thirdly, there’s sequel Lewis, which continued the story of Morse’s underling Robbie through his own inspector days, and which also ran for 33 episodes, up until 2015. Both are currently streamable on BritBox in the UK and US, as well as Itvx, and PBS Masterpiece.
The likelihood though, is that those three will have already been exhausted by Morse devotees, so here are some recommendations of detective shows with a touch of Endeavour about them, whether it’s a melancholic lead with a brilliant mind,...

Jenny Lewis has never had trouble expressing herself. On Joy’All’s “Puppy and a Truck,” she sings, “My 40s are kicking my ass … and handing them to me in a margarita glass.” Even before she split with her indie-rock group Rilo Kiley a decade ago, she’d assumed a persona that’s one part Dusty Springfield, another part Linda Ronstadt, and one more of Mary Richards (shake gently and sprinkle in a dash of Gram Parsons to taste.) She has always sounded a little down on her luck, and...

Lewis Capaldi has revealed that he still reads reviews of his music, even the less favourable ones.
The Grammy-nominated Scottish singer-songwriter is set to release his second studio album, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent, on 19 May.
His 2019 debut, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, topped the UK album charts for six weeks and became the best-selling album of both 2019 and 2020.
At the time of release, The Independent gave the album a four-star review, with Roisin O’Connor stating that it “proved Capaldi’s songwriting chops”.
In a new interview with The Independent, Capaldi says that he remains appreciative of, and entertained by the takes on his musical stylings.

Adil Ray has criticised Laurence Fox after the Lewis star compared insults aimed at him as an actor to Ray’s own experiences of racism.
On Sunday (10 April), the Good Morning Britain host – who has been vocal about past experiences in which he was the target of racism – responded to a news story about Essex police seizing racially offensive dolls from a pub.
The dolls, traditionally known as “golli***s”, feature a racist caricature of Black people.
Writing on Twitter, Ray commented: “I was called golliw*** at school. Just hearing the word frightens me. I can’t think of any good reason why someone on balance might think it’s ok to display them in a pub.”
In response, Fox tweeted: “Stay strong bro. I feel your pain. [Theatre critic] Quentin Letts described me as having a face that belonged in the winners enclosure at Aintree in a theatre review once, which,...

Lewis Capaldi opens up about suffering from bodily twitches while performing live in his new Netflix documentary.
In 2022, the Scottish singer-songwriter was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, a condition that affects the nerves and causes repetitive movements or unwanted sounds.
Before he received the diagnosis, he had experienced shoulder twitches that he said eventually “became out of control”.
“I didn’t know what it was at the time,” Capaldi disclosed in the new film, Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now.
“I’ve since learned that I have Tourette’s,” the Grammy-nominated pop star told the camera a week after his diagnosis. “Oh right, that makes complete sense now, when I look back.”
“Know how many people I’ve told I have Tourette’s since?” he asked. “It’s outrageous. People think I’m bragging. But it’s good to be like, ‘I’ve got this thing by the way, this...

Huey Lewis’ music is featured prominently in American Psycho, but the musician says he still hasn’t seen the movie more than two decades later. He initially boycotted it over a press release claiming Huey Lewis and the News pulled “Hip to Be Square” from the soundtrack due to the film’s violence.

On February 11, Harry Styles, 29, won four Brit Awards, and what better way to celebrate than getting a smooch with Lewis Capaldi.
The two singers had been nominated for Song of the Year with Styles taking the win for “As It Was.”
“This album and this song was the most fun I’ve had making music,” Styles said in his acceptance speech. He also thanked Capaldi and his former One Direction bandmates Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson during his speech.
Coming back to his table, Styles and Capaldi pointed at each other before embracing with a full kiss on the lips.
Amid cheers and claps, Capaldi could be heard joking, “I just kissed Harry Styles on the lips. I’m fully erect,” as he sat back down in his seat.
Also getting some love from the singer was actor Stanley Tucci, 62, who presented Styles with the Best Album award.

Steven Spielberg is no stranger to long movies, but the Oscar-winning “The Fabelmans” director sounds like he’s ready to dive into “prestige TV,” expressing his desire to helm a long-form TV series and singling out a recent hit show he would have directed had he been given the chance.
Appearing on the Smartless podcast, Spielberg was asked if he’d be interested in directing a prestige limited series, and he revealed that he’s ready to dive into long-form storytelling.
“I do have an appetite for long-form, and someday, I will direct a long-form series,” Spielberg said. “I mean, if someone would have brought me ‘Mare of Easttown,’ I would have done that. [Laughs] That was a beautifully directed story.”
“Mare of Easttown,” of course, is the Emmy-winning HBO limited series that aired in 2021 and starred Kate Winslet, directed entirely by Craig Zobel and written by Brad Ingelsby. Perhaps Spielberg...

It hasn't come as a surprise to fans that the BAFTA-nominated actor, Sanjeev Bhaskar, has been praised for playing Cain in Netflix's The Sandman, considering he is an extremely talented actor and has a versatile filmography.
While he might be best known for playing several comedic roles, such as Sanjeev Kumar in The Kumars at No. 42, he hasn't just limited himself to one genre, with the actor also branching out into several dramatic roles too. All these projects have certainly made an impression on the users on IMDb, who have taken the time to look at how he performed and reviewed which shows/movies they believed he was most memorable in.

Surely much fun’s to be had with “In the Ring,” a decade-spanning, 16-film curation of boxing pictures—Raging Bull and Fat City, of course, with some you forget are boxing movies (Rocco and His Brothers) and others you’ve likely never seen at all (count me excited for King Vidor’s The Champ). “Noir in Color” brilliantly upends common conception of a drama (and gives you excuse to see Nicholas Ray’s Party Girl); Setsuko Hara films are gathered into a handy collection; and Blake Edwards gets six.
On the Criterion Editions front they’ve gone all out: the Before trilogy, Alex Cox’s Walker, Leave Her to Heaven, Shaft, Destry Rides Again, Raging Bull, Hedwig and the Angry Inch,...

The multiverse fever of May breaks very soon and in its place, whatever June brings. But what will that be... beside birthday gifts for me (haha) But let's look back quickly at May in case you missed these highlights. You've been quiet as mice in the comments but we hope you're still enjoying. We do take requests if you have any. (May was very light outside of Cannes coverage we're aware but June will be jam-packed. Gird your loins)
A Dozen May Highlights
• FYC Honorary Oscars - 20 suggestions
• Anthony Hopkins full casting circle - from Cs Lewis to Sigmund Freud
• Best Shot: Happy Together - what a ravishment to revisit
• Nostalgia via The Breakfast Club - Baby Clyde revisited from a British kid-at-the-time perspective
• On Alexander Skarsgård - Matt says he's a character actor in hunk body
• Multiverse of Madness - Raves for The Scarlet Witch, otherwise... eh
• Returning Show...

Sometimes it’s like they read your mind—or just notice upcoming releases as you do. Whatever the case, I’m thrilled that the release of Terence Davies’ Benediction played (I assume!) some part in a full retro on the Criterion Channel this June, sad as I know that package will make me and anybody else who comes within ten feet of it. It’s among a handful of career retrospectives: they’ve also set a 12-film Judy Garland series populated by Berkeley and Minnelli, ten from Ulrike Ottinger, and four by Billy Wilder. But maybe their most adventurous idea in some time is a huge microbudget collection ranging from Ulmer’s Detour to Joel Potrykus’ Buzzard, fellow success stories—Nolan, Linklater, Jarmusch, Jia Zhangke—spread about.
