Happy Valentine’s Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared.

Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams’ eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010.

We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don’t, and the lasting effect many of Hyams’ films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers.

80s marked the true rise of buddy cop movies, with iconic films like "Lethal Weapon" setting the standard for the genre. "Red Heat" and "Running Scared" added unique twists to the buddy cop formula, portraying unlikely duos facing dangerous foes. Eddie Murphy's "Beverly Hills Cop" series showcased the comedic talent and action-packed adventures that defined 80s buddy cop films.

The buddy cop movie has had a long journey throughout pop culture, but the 80s are truly the decade in which the genre truly came alive. Just as the name implies, the buddy cop movie is a subgenre referring to action comedies centered around a duo of unlikely partners in law enforcement going on some dangerous or bizarre journey. Arguably, the first buddy cop movie was by famed filmmaker Akria Kurosawa, titled Stray Dog, and released in 1949.

However, it wouldn't be until the 80s that the buddy cop movie truly bloomed.

Apple TV+ is releasing what looks to be a chilling new series, just in time for Halloween. According to the streamer, Before is an “an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller” about a child psychiatrist and widower who encounters a small boy with a “haunting connection” to his past. Naturally, the lead role is played by the “you look mah-velous” guy.

Yup, Billy Crystal is the star of this dramatic, seemingly creepy show that, judging from the description, seems not so dissimilar from The Sixth Sense, another story of a child psychologist who befriends a child with whom he shares a mysterious connection. But imagine the Bruce Willis part played by someone who seems like he might break into a medley of humorous show tunes at any moment.

When you go back and take a look at the movies that were released in 2006, you might think we were all high. I mean some of us were but regardless, everything was so over the top. Eli Roth’s Hostel was tearing off tourists’ clothes while slashing their Achilles’, The Hills Have Eyes remake was gnarly in every way and does anybody remember that really cool but super weird Paul Walker flick Running Scared? We were on some dark stuff back in the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just the horror and action genres, either. Comedies like Grandma’s Boy had a level of wildness to them that you don’t see these days.

The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.

The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. Exclusive: Global sales agent Palisades Park Pictures has signed an agreement with VIP Medienfonds to represent all available media rights to titles in the Media 8 film library.

The slate includes rights to 14 films released between 2002-2013. The library includes titles such as Patty Jenkins’ Monster, starring Charlize Theron; Upside of Anger, starring Kevin Costner, Joan Allen, and Evan Rachel Wood; and Barbara Kopple’s action thriller Havoc, starring Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Channing Tatum.

Palisades Park Pictures will launch sales on the library titles at the upcoming MIPCOM and AFM markets. The licensing deal was negotiated by Birkemoe with VIP Medienfond’s Christian Beutel.

Gayle Hunnicutt, the Texas-born actor known for 1969’s “Marlowe” and her role as Vanessa Beaumont in “Dallas,” died on Aug. 31 in London, according to The Times of London. She was 80.

Hunnicutt played Vanessa Beaumont, an English aristocrat who shares an illegitimate son with Larry Hagman’s J.R. Ewing, in the final three seasons of “Dallas” from 1989 to 1991.

Born on Feb. 6, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas, Hunnicutt made her television debut in 1966 on the NBC sitcom “Mister Roberts.” She guested on several series in the ’60s, including “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Hey Landlord,” “Love on a Rooftop” and “Get Smart.”

On the film side, Hunnicutt starred opposite James Garner in the 1969 neo-noir crime film “Marlowe,” in which she played television star Mavis Wald. She appeared in more than 30 films during her career, including “The Wild Angels,” “P.J.,” “Freelance,” “Running Scared,” “Target” and “The Legend of Hell House” opposite Roddy McDowell.

Based on the 1976 novel of the same name, Confess, Fletch manages to take the bones and tone of a comic murder-mystery and create something as charming as its protagonist. Gregory Mcdonald wrote 15 novels in the series, including two sets of spin-offs. Though the first novel was filmed back in 1985, the second took decades to come to the screen. That despite there already having been a sequel, one written specifically for the screen.

Mcdonald had other works adapted to film including Running Scared and Johnny Depp's directorial debut The Brave. Recurrent themes of murder, suicide, and bad deals abound. Noir-ish in intent, Confess, Fletch occupies a conspiratorial hinterland that'd be familiar to Chandler or Hammett or in some of the finer things the work of Fleming. When Fletch says "I'm an open book" he's got form.

Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Turman died Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital. He was 96. He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.

His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

Turman’s producing career spanned 50 years, and he served as director of USC’s Peter Stark Producing program from 1991 until he retired in 2021 at age 94.

Born in Los Angeles in 1926, Turman graduated from UCLA and broke into the industry after answering an ad in Variety to work at the Kurt Frings agency. He represented actors, and after getting a meeting with Alfred Hitchcock through their friend Ernest Lehman, he was able to book four of his agency’s clients in “North By Northwest.”

Turman moved into producing, working on films including Judy Garland’s last film “I Could Go On Singing,” “The Best Man,” “The Great White Hope” and “Pretty Poison.”

Dominique Fishback is sitting backstage waiting to discuss her latest role, starring in Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm,” when her ears perk up at a familiar sound: an engine revving.

On the other side of a partition, an audience watches a particularly tense scene from the show’s fourth episode, titled “Running Scared,” when Fishback’s Dre — a murderous super fan of Ni’jah, a Beyoncé-esque pop star — faces down a group of women who stand between her and attending the singer’s concert.

Paul Walker enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood that carried him through various roles in several unique movies before his unfortunate death in 2013 at just 40 years old. Fans likely remember him best as Brian O'Conner in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but the talented and handsome actor also appeared in critical hits such as "Pleasantville," "Joy Ride," and Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers," and served as executive producer on the films "Vehicle 19," "Hours," and "Pawn Shop Chronicles." “The Santa Clause” series at Disney Plus has brought on Elizabeth Mitchell to reprise her role from the film franchise, Variety has confirmed.

The series, which was announced on Jan. 14, will see Tim Allen once again play Santa Claus/Scott Calvin. Mitchell will play Scott’s wife, Carol Calvin, a.k.a. Mrs. Claus. Mitchell first played the role in “The Santa Clause 2” and did so again in “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.”

James Jones is mostly known for his debut novel, From Here to Eternity. His second novel, published in 1958, was Some Came Running, a 1,200-page potboiler that blows the lid off small town America. It was a more adult Peyton Place, if that was possible for the time. Colorful, sometimes sordid, characters populate the book, and it didn’t do as well as that classic first publication. Nevertheless, MGM immediately scooped it up and managed to turn it into a motion picture by the end of the same year.

The life of legendary band manager/Creation Records founder Alan McGee has been brought to the big screen by director Nick Moran and screenwriter Irvine Welsh, in Burning Wheel Productions’ Creation Stories.

Adapted from McGee’s autobiography, Creation Stories- Riots, Raves and Running and Record Label, the film charts McGee’s anarchic rise from small town promoter to industry mogul and the formation his record label Creation, which housed the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Oasis.

Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith has joined forces with guitarist Richie Kotzen, best known for stints in Poison and Mr. Big, for a bluesy, hard-rock collaboration they’ve dubbed Smith/Kotzen. The artists will drop a self-titled release on March 26th, and they’re previewing it with “Taking My Chances,” which shows off how their sensibilities blend as Smith’s bluesy licks complement Kotzen’s shredding and husky vocals.

“Conservation In Space”

When Silent Running was released in 1972 as a somewhat “experimental” venture from Universal Pictures, a studio that had decided to give a handful of new filmmakers a million dollars each to make whatever they wanted, it flew under the radar of most folks who weren’t into science fiction. After all, it was a tough challenge to come up with anything to compete with 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), which was still playing on second and third runs around the world. Silent Running did okay at the box office, but it wasn’t a runaway hit.

Nevertheless, Running, which was directed by one of 2001’s visual effects supervisors, Douglas Trumbull (it was his debut as a director), became a cult movie that has played revival houses and did good business on home video years later in multiple formats.

“It calls back a time when there were flowers all over the Earth… and there were valleys. And there were plains of tall green grass that you could lie down in – you could go to sleep in. And there were blue skies, and there was fresh air… and there were things growing all over the place, not just in some domed enclosures blasted some millions of miles out in to space.”

The original Borat was perfectly willing to blend scripted and unscripted material together to make an extremely funny, if difficult to watch film. It was slightly dishonest, but it made me laugh throughout. Borat often held repellent ideas about women, race, and any “hot button” topic one might care to mention. This was all designed to shock and amuse but at his core Borat was always a sweet little boy, who had the bad luck of being raised in a comically backward former Soviet Republic. It was this sweet naivety that held my attention, even if Borat was doing something awful. I felt no such twang of humanity from Baron Cohen’s other comic creation, Bruno who had no excuse for acting like such a jerk.

Paul Walker’s daughter, Meadow, is commemorating what would have been the late actor’s 47th birthday by sharing a photo on Instagram.

In the family photo mage, Walker is holding his baby daughter and smiling. Meadow Walker wrote in the caption, “The moment I realized we are twins,”

Paul Walker died in November 2013 at age 40 in a car crash. The accident happened a few weeks after Meadow turned 15. Walker and friend Roger Rodas were killed when their 2005 Porsche Carrera Gt slammed into a pole and burst into flames.

A year before his death, Meadow moved to live with him after spending most of her childhood in Hawaii with her mother.

It’s been a pretty good couple of months for streaming fans, and it seems like every platform is aiming to ensure viewers stuck inside have plenty to watch and enjoy until life resumes some sense of normalcy again. On that note, this weekend marks yet another few days of further content drops from all of your favorite streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime.

Up first, Netflix is releasing the second season of its hit show, Dead to Me, a dark comedy about loss, grief, and friendship with incredible performances from veteran TV actresses Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.

Hulu, meanwhile, is debuting the very first season of the new animated show, Solar Opposites, created by Rick and Morty masterminds Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan. If you’re a fan of Roiland’s foul-mouth, wacky brand of humor, it might be worth checking out for a weekend binge.

Prolific movie producer David Foster, who collaborated with Steve McQueen on “The Getaway” and shepherded Robert Altman’s “McCabe and Mrs. Miller,” died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 90.

Foster started in the business as a publicist representing McQueen along with Peter Sellers, Richard Attenborough, Shirley MacLaine, Andy Williams and Sonny and Cher.

He left publicity and partnered with Mitchell Brower, where their first production was acclaimed 1971 Western “McCabe and Mrs. Miller.” Warren Beatty and Julie Christie starred, with Christie netting an Oscar nom.

In 1972, he produced Sam Peckinpah’s “The Getaway” in collaboration with McQueen and Ali McGraw. It became one of Peckinpah’s most financially successful films.

Foster partnered with “The Graduate” producer Larry Turman in 1974. The Turman Foster Company started out with “The Drowning Pool,” starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and continued with “Heroes,” John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” “Running Scared,” 1994’s reboot of “The Getaway” and “The River Wild.

Veteran Hollywood producer David Foster died Monday. He was 90 years old.

Foster’s career spanned 60 years and he produced such films as McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Getaway, and John Carpenters’ The Thing. Foster began his career as a publicist representing such talent as Steve McQueen, Peter Sellers, Richard Attenborough, Shirley McClain, Andy Williams, James Coburn, Sonny and Cher and many others. He worked first at Rogers and Cowan, and then as a partner at Allan, Foster Ingersoll and Weber from 1960 to 1968.

In 1968, at the urging of many of his clients, he became a film producer. He partnered with Mitchell Brower and right out the gate they produced Robert Altman’s classic McCabe And Mrs. Miller, starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. He partnered with his close friend, Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw to produce the Sam Peckinpah-directed hit The Getaway.

In 1974, he formed a company with The Graduate producer Larry Turman.
