Happy Valentine’s Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared.
Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams’ eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010.
We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don’t, and the lasting effect many of Hyams’ films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers.
There’s much talk about Hyams’ ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies.

To say Billie Eilish is talented would be an understatement. Despite only being 23 years old, the pop star has accomplished more than most people will in a lifetime, and now the performer is branching out, having made her acting debut in Swarm. Eilish first exploded onto the music scene with hits like "Bad Guy' and "Ocean Eyes". Since then, Eilish's career has only seen upswings. The musician already has two Oscars for her hit songs from No Time to Die and Barbie. She's also won nine Grammy Awards. Suffice it to say, Eilish is multi-faceted.
Swarm, the 2023 Amazon Prime Video miniseries co-created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, is the perfect place for Eilish to show off her acting chops. It centers around a young woman named Andrea "Dre" Greene (Dominique Fishbach) as she falls deeper into obsessive fandom surrounding her favorite pop star. Ni'Jah (Nirine S. Brown). It...

During Paul Walkers brief absence from Fast & Furious, he starred in Into the Blue and it couldve been the actors replacement action-adventure franchise. After playing Brian OConner in The Fast and the Furious and its first sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Walker was missing from the threequel, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. He only returned to the role of Brian in 2009s soft reboot, simply titled Fast & Furious, which moved away from the series focus on street racing and turned it into a more straightforward action movie franchise.
While Brian is undoubtedly Walkers most iconic character, he had a very respectable career outside the Fast & Furious franchise, too. He played a notorious bank robber in the heist movie Takers, he played a parole breaker in the car chase movie Vehicle 19, and he played a low-level mafioso in the neo-noir thriller Running Scared. One of Walkers starring vehicles,...

When Billy Crystal regularly hosted the Academy Awards, he liked to begin the show with a montage where he was inserted into the nominated films. The 2000 opening leaned more on Hollywood history, with Crystal appearing in vintage films like The Graduate and Psycho. There were still jokes about that year’s movies, though, like when a Charlie Chaplin homage included a title card where Crystal quoted the most famous line from The Sixth Sense: “I see dead people.” Crystal later had some more fun with the M. Night Shyamalan sensation with a song parody,...

The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

The Flash is not only the fastest man alive - he's a pillar of DC Comics. He's been racing through the panels and pages since 1940, and his stories are some of the most fast-paced, most nail-biting, and most heartwarming that the comics industry has to offer, all told by the best and the brightest creators of our time.
Over his comic book history, The Flash has changed many times. He's a beacon of hope, he's somehow always late for social engagements, but most of all, he will never stop running the race. From Jay Garrick to Barry Allen to Wally West and more, it's incredibly difficult to pin down a character that can't exactly be caught, considering there is an 80-year-wealth of stories to choose from.
Yet, here they are: the best Flash stories that will make any beginner fall in love with comics, and any veteran fan remember why...

80s marked the true rise of buddy cop movies, with iconic films like "Lethal Weapon" setting the standard for the genre. "Red Heat" and "Running Scared" added unique twists to the buddy cop formula, portraying unlikely duos facing dangerous foes. Eddie Murphy's "Beverly Hills Cop" series showcased the comedic talent and action-packed adventures that defined 80s buddy cop films.
The buddy cop movie has had a long journey throughout pop culture, but the 80s are truly the decade in which the genre truly came alive. Just as the name implies, the buddy cop movie is a subgenre referring to action comedies centered around a duo of unlikely partners in law enforcement going on some dangerous or bizarre journey. Arguably, the first buddy cop movie was by famed filmmaker Akria Kurosawa, titled Stray Dog, and released in 1949.
However, it wouldn't be until the 80s that the buddy cop movie truly bloomed.

Apple TV+ is releasing what looks to be a chilling new series, just in time for Halloween. According to the streamer, Before is an “an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller” about a child psychiatrist and widower who encounters a small boy with a “haunting connection” to his past. Naturally, the lead role is played by the “you look mah-velous” guy.
Yup, Billy Crystal is the star of this dramatic, seemingly creepy show that, judging from the description, seems not so dissimilar from The Sixth Sense, another story of a child psychologist who befriends a child with whom he shares a mysterious connection. But imagine the Bruce Willis part played by someone who seems like he might break into a medley of humorous show tunes at any moment.
Before also stars the great Judith Light, and one of the executive producers is Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, who recently penned the script for...

Lethal Weapon, a classic action movie, has flaws that become more apparent on a rewatch. The film's widespread influence makes it feel unoriginal today, and Mel Gibson's performance is too over-the-top. The movie has plot holes, unprofessional and problematic character actions, a grating soundtrack, and a one-note villain.
This article contains mentions of suicide and homophobia.
Lethal Weapon is a masterpiece of the buddy cop genre, but from plot holes to over-the-top acting to problematic humor, there are some parts of the movie that stand out on a rewatch today. When it was first released in 1987, Lethal Weapon was well-received by critics and became a big hit at the box office. It was so successful, in fact, that it launched a franchise comprised of three additional movies and a TV show.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Snakes on a Plane was Written and Narrated by Mike Holtz, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When you go back and take a look at the movies that were released in 2006, you might think we were all high. I mean some of us were but regardless, everything was so over the top. Eli Roth’s Hostel was tearing off tourists’ clothes while slashing their Achilles’, The Hills Have Eyes remake was gnarly in every way and does anybody remember that really cool but super weird Paul Walker flick Running Scared? We were on some dark stuff back in the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just the horror and action genres, either. Comedies like Grandma’s Boy had a level of wildness to them that you don’t see these days.

The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.
It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

As far as conspiracy theories go, very few have had as much of a life as the notion that NASA faked the Apollo moon landing. In some ways, one can understand why people felt this way, as it was one of the most critical events in human history, and the only witness was a TV camera. Back then, people distrusted anything they couldn’t see with their own eyes. In the seventies, conspiracy theories started to get famous, especially as far as the government went, with this the era of Watergate. People no longer trusted authority, and into this fraught environment came Capricorn One, a sci-fi-tinged conspiracy thriller that was one of the most popular films of 1977 but has since been largely forgotten – save for a small cult of devoted fans.

Based on the 1976 novel of the same name, Confess, Fletch manages to take the bones and tone of a comic murder-mystery and create something as charming as its protagonist. Gregory Mcdonald wrote 15 novels in the series, including two sets of spin-offs. Though the first novel was filmed back in 1985, the second took decades to come to the screen. That despite there already having been a sequel, one written specifically for the screen.
Mcdonald had other works adapted to film including Running Scared and Johnny Depp's directorial debut The Brave. Recurrent themes of murder, suicide, and bad deals abound. Noir-ish in intent, Confess, Fletch occupies a conspiratorial hinterland that'd be familiar to Chandler or Hammett or in some of the finer things the work of Fleming. When Fletch says "I'm an open book" he's got form.
We start as the text does, with a murder. Not one that's...

He had a stellar career not only as a producer of such seminal films as The Graduate (1967), The Great White Hope (1970), American History X (1998) and many more in a producing career that lasted six decades, but he also took a significant turn when he left his partnership with producer David Foster to head the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC in 1991, an association that continued until his retirement just two years ago.
His son, John Turman, confirmed the death to Deadline. “Our father Lawrence Turman passed away late yesterday,” he said. “It’s sad, but he had a long and storied life, and it’s the passing of an era.” He added that the MPTF is planning a memorial service as well as USC at a later date.

Lawrence Turman, producer of films including Oscar winner “The Graduate,” and longtime chair of the Peter Stark Producing program at USC, died Saturday at the Motion Picture Home in Woodland Hills. He was 96.
Turman’s producing career spanned 50 years, and he served as director of USC’s Peter Stark Producing program from 1991 until he retired in 2021 at age 94.
Born in Los Angeles in 1926, Turman graduated from UCLA and broke into the industry after answering an ad in Variety to work at the Kurt Frings agency. He represented actors, and after getting a meeting with Alfred Hitchcock through their friend Ernest Lehman, he was able to book four of his agency’s clients in “North By Northwest.”
Turman moved into producing, working on films including Judy Garland’s last film “I Could Go On Singing,” “The Best Man,” “The Great White Hope” and “Pretty Poison.”

Dominique Fishback is sitting backstage waiting to discuss her latest role, starring in Amazon Prime Video’s “Swarm,” when her ears perk up at a familiar sound: an engine revving.
On the other side of a partition, an audience watches a particularly tense scene from the show’s fourth episode, titled “Running Scared,” when Fishback’s Dre — a murderous super fan of Ni’jah, a Beyoncé-esque pop star — faces down a group of women who stand between her and attending the singer’s concert.
Fishback playfully re-enacts the scene, gripping an imaginary steering wheel and pressing her high-heeled foot down onto a pretend gas pedal that sends her speeding ahead and crashing into Dre’s latest victims. She pulls a funny face and hams it up for a rep’s cellphone camera, unknowingly demonstrating the type of darkly comedic energy that makes “Swarm” so buzzworthy.

Set between 2016 and 2018, Swarm follows Dre (Dominique Fishback), a fan of the fictional Beyoncé-esque music icon Ni’Jah, whose love for her favorite singer crosses the line from obsessive to murderous. After setting off on a cross-country journey, she meets a slew of characters — and commits a slew of crimes.

Paul Walker enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood that carried him through various roles in several unique movies before his unfortunate death in 2013 at just 40 years old. Fans likely remember him best as Brian O'Conner in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, but the talented and handsome actor also appeared in critical hits such as "Pleasantville," "Joy Ride," and Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers," and served as executive producer on the films "Vehicle 19," "Hours," and "Pawn Shop Chronicles." He even enjoyed a guest spot on National Geographic's "Expedition Great White" in 2009.
In his youth, Walker popped up in a variety of high-profile TV shows, among them "Highway to Heaven," "Charles in Charge," "Who's the Boss," and "Touched by an Angel," before making the leap to schlocky B-movie horror films such as "Tammy and the Rex," opposite Denise Richards, in which his character's brain somehow lands inside a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

So Cold the River opens with former hotshot documentary director Erica Shaw making a slideshow for someone’s funeral. It’s about all the work she can get since one of her films proved a convicted killer’s innocence. Only for him to slaughter his entire family as soon as he was released.
One of those slide shows leads to her being hired by Alyssa Bradford to shoot a biography of her father, Campbell Bradford. With a bottle of Pluto Water, mineral water with alleged healing properties as her only clue, she heads to the town of West Braden Indiana to begin shooting. "The King's Man" premieres in theaters this week, bringing the harrowing dangers of World War I firmly into director Matthew Vaughn's spy-film territory. The "Kingsman" prequel centers on a dangerous conspiracy at the heart of the war, and the Duke of Oxford (Ralph Fiennes) must band together a trusted cohort of heroes to combat the terrible menace.
One of the most pivotal of these protagonists is Conrad (Harris Dickinson), the Duke's own son, who struggles to balance his partnership with the fledgling band with his strong sense of duty to the British cause in WWI. Conrad's decisions prove pivotal in...

“Small Town, Big Drama”
By Raymond Benson
James Jones is mostly known for his debut novel, From Here to Eternity. His second novel, published in 1958, was Some Came Running, a 1,200-page potboiler that blows the lid off small town America. It was a more adult Peyton Place, if that was possible for the time. Colorful, sometimes sordid, characters populate the book, and it didn’t do as well as that classic first publication. Nevertheless, MGM immediately scooped it up and managed to turn it into a motion picture by the end of the same year.
Frank Sinatra found the material appealing, and he saw himself as the story’s lead, Dave Hirsh, a prodigal son of sorts from fictional Parkman, Indiana. Discharged from the army, Hirsh arrives in town with a hangover and a party girl he picked up in Chicago, Ginny Moorehead (Shirley MacLaine). His brother,...

The eighties were the heyday of the buddy cop movie. The year before Lethal Weapon came out and make the genre even more popular, Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines were Chicago cops on the trail of a drug lord (played by Jimmy Smits) in Running Scared (1986) by director Peter Hyams. While a solid box office hit (there was even talk of a sequel), in the decades that followed Running Scared would become somewhat obscure. That's too bad as it's a really…...

“Conservation In Space”
By Raymond Benson
When Silent Running was released in 1972 as a somewhat “experimental” venture from Universal Pictures, a studio that had decided to give a handful of new filmmakers a million dollars each to make whatever they wanted, it flew under the radar of most folks who weren’t into science fiction. After all, it was a tough challenge to come up with anything to compete with 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), which was still playing on second and third runs around the world. Silent Running did okay at the box office, but it wasn’t a runaway hit.
Nevertheless, Running, which was directed by one of 2001’s visual effects supervisors, Douglas Trumbull (it was his debut as a director), became a cult movie that has played revival houses and did good business on home video years later in multiple formats.

“It calls back a time when there were flowers all over the Earth… and there were valleys. And there were plains of tall green grass that you could lie down in – you could go to sleep in. And there were blue skies, and there was fresh air… and there were things growing all over the place, not just in some domed enclosures blasted some millions of miles out in to space.”

The original Borat was perfectly willing to blend scripted and unscripted material together to make an extremely funny, if difficult to watch film. It was slightly dishonest, but it made me laugh throughout. Borat often held repellent ideas about women, race, and any “hot button” topic one might care to mention. This was all designed to shock and amuse but at his core Borat was always a sweet little boy, who had the bad luck of being raised in a comically backward former Soviet Republic. It was this sweet naivety that held my attention, even if Borat was doing something awful. I felt no such twang of humanity from Baron Cohen’s other comic creation, Bruno who had no excuse for acting like such a jerk.

It’s been a pretty good couple of months for streaming fans, and it seems like every platform is aiming to ensure viewers stuck inside have plenty to watch and enjoy until life resumes some sense of normalcy again. On that note, this weekend marks yet another few days of further content drops from all of your favorite streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, and Amazon Prime.
Up first, Netflix is releasing the second season of its hit show, Dead to Me, a dark comedy about loss, grief, and friendship with incredible performances from veteran TV actresses Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.
Hulu, meanwhile, is debuting the very first season of the new animated show, Solar Opposites, created by Rick and Morty masterminds Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan. If you’re a fan of Roiland’s foul-mouth, wacky brand of humor, it might be worth checking out for a weekend binge.
