Authenticity and “Territorial Anchors” Are Keys to Success for Content for U.S. Hispanics, Execs Say
Stories for the U.S. Hispanic market were the topic of debate at Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid, Spain on Thursday afternoon.
The fourth edition of the event focused on Portuguese- and Spanish-language content presented a panel featuring Carlos Quintanilla (Control Z, Working Girl), vp, original content at Sony Pictures Television, Christian Gabela, senior vp, head and executive producer for Latam & U.S. Hispanic at Gaumont, Leonardo Zimbrón (Acapulco, Club of Crows), senior vp, film & international coproduction at 3Pas Studios in Mexico, and Sergio Pizzolante (Zorro, Nicky Jam: The Winner), president, Secuoya Studios commercial & international distribution. The session was moderated by Fidela Navarro, CEO of Dopamine in Mexico.
“U.S. Hispanic audiences represent a huge market,” a panel description had said. “Executives reflect on how they approach the creation of films and series for them.”
Early on in the debate, it was all about the continued growth and upside.

On Sunday we are celebrating the winners of the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, the second time this year after January’s strike-delayed 75th Emmys, but we know the results will be, at least in part, quite different (well maybe not for The Bear). So here is my stab at predicting just who those winners will be.
Outstanding Drama Series
With only The Crown returning from the lineup here just eight months ago, what might have been a fresh, wide open race now seems utterly predictable in terms of a runaway winner. After already setting a record for a single season series with 14 wins at last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies, FX’s Shōgun with 25 nominations overall to lead this year’s list of nominees will certainly prevail here, proof that FX’s last minute move from Limited Series to Drama Series will pay off big time.

In news that is sure to move waves in Spain, Portugal and beyond, former Netflix exec Juan Mayne, a name inextricably linked to the build of Spain as a global film-tv power, has been appointed as SkyShowtime regional content director for Iberia, encompassing Spain and Portugal.
The move creates an effective new streaming door to knock on for Spanish producers as some other – though not all – platforms are curbing commissions or orders in the two countries.
SkyShowtime in Spain and Portugal will be led, moreover, by one of Spain’s best known, connected and personable of TV execs, supercharging its operation in Spain from the get-go.
Mayne will report to the Amsterdam-based Kai Finke, himself appointed in September as chief content officer at the Comcast-Paramount joint venture SVOD platform , which focuses on European audiences. Mayne joins the now established European programming team of Edyta Pytlewska – regional content director for Central...

SkyShowtime, the European streaming joint venture of Comcast and Paramount Global, on Sunday unveiled a slate of original and exclusive series that will be premiering on the service later this year and in 2024.
CEO Monty Sarhan announced during a keynote appearance at the Marché du Film in Cannes that overall a total of 10 SkyShowtime originals from different regions and countries would premiere on the service in 2023. Among them are shows from its three regions of the Nordics, Iberia and Central and Eastern Europe. The streamer, which serves a total of 22 markets, described that as “a staggering and nearly unheard of accomplishment for a service that is less than one year old.”
Among others, SkyShowtime will later this year debut Codename: Annika, its first original from the Nordics. The Finnish-Swedish production, which previously had the working title ID, was part of a deal the streamer struck early this year with Warner Bros. Discovery...

SkyShowtime has struck its first major content deal, picking up exclusive rights to 21 HBO Max Europe originals.
The move from the Comcast/Paramount Jv comes after HBO Max pulled commissioning from the majority of European territories and removed originals from its platform, which left numerous scripted shows up for grabs. Following Warner Bros and Discovery’s merger, the window for HBO to benefit from this content has now passed, although the newly-merged Wbd has stressed it remains committed to European content.
SkyShowtime, which launched recently in 12 markets in which Paramount+ and Comcast-owned Peacock aren’t active, has picked up critically-acclaimed shows including Norway’s Beforeigners, Sweden’s Lust and Denmark’s Kamikaze.
Shows that were yet to air include Finland and Sweden’s ID, Czechia and Slovakia’s The Winner and Poland’s Warszawjanka.
All in all, SkyShowtime has picked up 168 episodes of original scripted, a big boost to a...

Television, film, and video games composer Daniel Licht, best known for his work on Showtime’s “Dexter,” died late Wednesday following a battle with cancer. He was 60. Originally from Detroit, Licht’s first major work was scoring the 1991 horror film “Children of the Night.” His compositions caught the attention of Clive Barker, who tapped Licht to score “Hellraiser: Bloodline.” Licht scored numerous horror films but also forayed into more mainstream fare like the Ben Stiller film “Permanent Midnight,” and indies like “The Winner” and “Cowboy Up.” Licht’s work on “Dexter” was well regarded, and each season’s soundtrack was released for sale.
