The Irish accent is consistently voted one of the most attractive in the world, yet even some of the world’s finest actors have trouble with it. Leonardo DiCaprio tried, as did Julia Roberts (twice), and dare we even mention Brad Pitt?
Today (17 March) marks St Patrick’s Day, and if you have no pub and/or beer plans, why not experience the next best thing: reminiscing about the wonkiest Irish accents in film history.
Relatively new to this great lineage of bad accents is Wild Mountain Thyme, a romantic drama released in the UK in early 2021 and so inexplicable that even literal Irish actors seemed to speak with fake Irish accents in it.
Such is the evil power of this particular bit of fakery, though – Hollywood’s bastardised visions of Ireland so all-encompassing and destructive that few can survive it.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Francis Megahy, a writer, director and documentarian whose credits included the Pierce Brosnan film Taffin and such British series as Minder and the Ian McShane-starring Lovejoy, has died. He was 85.
Megahy died Friday in his Los Angeles home after a long battle with cancer, his cousin, Adrian Cohen, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A raconteur and bon vivant, Megahy also was behind The Disappearance of Kevin Johnson (1996), a mockumentary about a Hollywood con man that starred Brosnan, James Coburn and Megahy's close friend Dudley Moore. It opened the inaugural Slamdance Film Festival, and after a screening in London, a ...

The film that Stephen King insisted his name be taken off. It's The Lawnmower Man...
The film: Dr Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) is at the forefront of research, using virtual reality and drug combinations in an attempt to increase intelligence in primates. When it all goes wrong, he turns to an intellectually disabled man, Jobe (Jeff Fahey), and promises him intelligence in return for his role as a human test subject. Naturally, it all goes a bit awry when Jobe succeeds beyond Angelo’s wildest dreams. Oh and Dean Norris adopts a weird, clipped accent and is nefarious.

The Lawnmower Man did not start out life as an adaptation of Stephen King’s folksy short story of the same name, but rather as a screenplay called Cyber God,...

Little White Lies Weekender, London
The best-designed film magazine on the shelf celebrates its 50th issue with a display of its unimpeachable good taste – mostly. The selection is largely overlooked/underpraised auteur classics, such as Harmony Korine's Gummo, Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch Drunk Love, Lynch's Mulholland Drive, and obscure 1970s road movie Wanda. There are also previews of future releases like Lukas Moodysson's We Are The Best!, plus 1980s Irish "thriller" (and Adam and Joe favourite) Taffin – a monumentally bad movie that definitely didn't get Pierce Brosnan the Bond gig. If you're quick, you can still catch Lwl's pop-up shop in Old Street, too.

Susanne Bier’s previous feature, the Academy Award-winning In A Better World, was a largely serious affair that grappled with lofty themes of injustice, violence and retribution, so it’s not at all surprising that she would want to follow it up with something a little more light-hearted. In Love Is All You Need she’s delivered something fun, if not entirely frothy and frivolous, despite the film’s obvious romantic comedy trappings.
The set-up sounds grim, but it’s fair to say that it doesn’t play out quite are depressingly as it sounds. Danish hairdresser Ida (Trine Dyrholm) is recuperating from a bout of chemotherapy and a mastectomy to treat her breast cancer, and arrives home from hospital one day to find her husband boinking a ditzy young woman from his accounts department. Devastated, she heads off alone to her daughter’s wedding in Italy, and when her...

Taffin's iconic flip-out aside, Pierce Brosnan has had no more high-pressure line to deliver in his career than his first "Bond, James Bond" in GoldenEye. The Irishman sums up the demands of the situation quite beautifully in this clip from new Bond documentary Everything Or Nothing. "Roger and Sean would come into my mind", he remembers, "and in the end I didn't fight them, I just let them in." Billed as "The Untold Story of 007", the documentary marks 50 years of James Bond with an in-depth telling of the history of the espionage franchise. Mark your diaries or risk being straddled to death by Xenia Onatopp.Everything Or Nothing is out in cinemas on October 5.
