Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier (Dinner in America) from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Tom Dean, a film titled Carolina Caroline is currently in production – but rather than filming in North or South Carolina, it’s being made in Kentucky. When you first look at the cast list as reported by Deadline, you might be led to believe that this is a horror project, because in the lead roles we have genre icons Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner, who has been in the likes of Red, The Haunting in Connecticut, Jennifer’s Body, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Red State, The Walking Dead, The Cleanse, Alien Code, Ghosts of War, Smile, The Passenger; Mother, May I?; and the upcoming Smile sequel. But this one isn’t horror; it’s being described as a romantic crime thriller.

Watching cheesy horror films with friends is a blast as everyone laughs over the films' ridiculous plots. The 1980s was an important decade for horror films where the best, and cheesiest, examples of slasher films and iconic killers were introduced. Many of the cheesiest horror films from the '80s are purposefully comical and pay homage to the greatest creative figures and tropes in horror.
There's comfort found in watching a hair-raising horror movie with others, but a similar community can be just as appreciated for comedy horror films that are beyond ridiculous. Many horror films lack scares but excel in outlandish plots, wild and over-the-top acts of violence, and, especially when it pertains to the '80s, aged special effects. Horror films have yet to wane in popularity, but the genre saw a peak in the '80s.
The decade introduced iconic horror characters and saw a rise in the popularity of slasher films.

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.
Victor Crowley was played by stuntman Kane Hodder, perhaps best known for playing the masked killer Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood,...

On October 24th, Screambox is premiering the highly sought-after Door, an extremely rare home invasion slasher movie from 1988 that has never been screened outside of Japan and has just been remastered. The final 20 minutes are bonkers!

“A lonely housewife is held hostage in her own apartment by an increasingly deranged door-to-door salesman in this forgotten home invasion masterpiece.”
Directed by Banmei Takahashi, the story behind Door is extremely interesting.
Many of you may remember Director’s Company, a Japanese production company from 1982-1992 that was made up of many legends of Japanese cinema including Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Sogo Ishii, Shinji Somai, and others.
They made many amazing Japanese films but also broke ground for genre cinema in Japan including the cult classic Evil Dead Trap. Before Evil Dead Trap...

A officially sanctioned Nickelback documentary, Hate to Love: Nickelback, is set to receive its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The trailer can be streamed below.
Directed by British filmmaker Leigh Brooks, the career-spanning film will explore Nickelback’s rise to the top of the charts, as well as the negativity that has followed the Canadian band despite its overwhelming commercial success.
The TIFF website’s description of the doc reads, “Nickelback is one of the most successful acts in music history — they’re also the number one band haters love to hate. This intimate portrait surveys the Canadian stadium rockers’ rollercoaster career.”
Brooks finished the film back in June and reflected on the experience in a post on LinkedIn.

Terror Vision has quickly become one of my go-to labels for obscure horror titles, and they're getting a jump-start on the Halloween season with #13WeeksOfHalloween, offering an eclectic mix of new, rare, and cult releases on VHS, Blu-ray, 4K Uhd, LP, and cassette:

Whether he was working as an actor, director, or makeup effects artist, John Carl Buechler brought a unique talent to every project he worked on over the decades, and it is with great sadness that we share the news that he has passed away at the age of 66.
Buechler passed away after a battle with Stage IV prostate cancer, as confirmed by the GoFundMe page that has been set up to raise much-needed funds for his medical costs.
When you talk about influential makeup effects artists from the last four decades, Buechler's name deserves to be mentioned at the top of the list. A practical effects guru, Buechler helped bring monsters and nightmares to life on screen in the heyday of practical effects, working on films such as Trancers, Halloween 4, TerrorVision, the first three Ghoulies films, and so many more projects that dazzled generations of horror fans.

When it comes to horror and sci-fi movies from 1986, there are several milestone titles that always come to mind first: Aliens, The Fly, Blue Velvet, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Manhunter, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, or even Psycho III, just to name a few. But like any great year of cinema, there are always a few underrated gems that get overshadowed along the way and should receive a little extra love. Here are six films from 1986 that I think deserve to be on every genre fan’s radar:
F/X: A movie about a special effects artist who gets mixed up in a government conspiracy, at a time when practical effects were in their heyday? Yes, please. F/X isn’t a film I hear a ton of folks talk about, but it has been on cable a lot lately, which means I’ve spent a few nights revisiting it,...

Though it’s often remembered as one of the many Gremlins rip-offs of the ‘80s, Ghoulies has its origins in 1983 (or a year before Gremlins hit screens), when producer Charles Band and creature effects guru Stan Winston dreamed up a film called Beasties about a bunch of small creatures wreaking havoc on a group of young people. It underwent some changes on the way to the screen: rather than Band directing as originally planned, the film would be helmed by actor Luca Bercovici, who had previously worked for Band on 1982’s Parasite. Stan Winston would not design the creatures, either; those duties fell to John Carl Buechler. And despite what its title might suggest, there wouldn’t end up being very many ghoulies in Ghoulies.
Instead, the 1984 film focuses mainly on a man (Peter Liapis) who inherits a mansion from his father (rocker Richard Des Barres) and ends up conjuring...

I don’t like musicals. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that I hate musicals. Even that one that you think I should see because it just might change my mind, no, I probably hate it. I couldn’t understand why everybody flipped over Repo. I watched it and wanted to turn it off the entire time. I never watched Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd, I didn’t even bother watching Devil’s Carnival. The extent of my enjoyment of the musical ends in things like South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Cannibal the Musical, The Wall, and that’s pretty much it. When I saw that Scream Factory were releasing Phantom of the Paradise, I had mixed emotions. I love Scream, so naturally I want to support one of their releases, and I love De Palma, so of course I want to see one...

It’s hard to believe that it’s already August, which means fall (and Halloween!) are just right around the corner. To keep all you genre fans busy in the meantime, there are a couple of classic releases coming this week from Scream Factory, as well as Mike Flanagan’s Oculus.

Oculus (20th Century Fox, Blu-ray & DVD)
Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. I’ll admit two things. Number one, I’ve never seen Phantom of the Paradise before. I’ve known of its existence, but I have yet to take it in. Number Two, I’m not the worlds biggest musical fan, even when it deals with subject matter that interests me, but I’m willing to give anything a shot. Especially if it’s coming from my favorite Blu-ray label, Scream Factory. The company has announced the extras that will be available on the disc, and they look to be plentiful. I’m looking forward to giving this one a shot when it hits on August 5th. Check out the press release below.

Stars: Paul Hipp, Martha Quinn, Aaron Lustig, Charlie Spradling, Ian Patrick Williams | Written by Jackson Barr | Directed by Ted Nicolaou
I’m a bad Full Moon fan. I really am… I can now cross Bad Channels off my list of Full Moon flicks I know of but haven’t seen.
Yet another collaboration between Charles Band and his Subspecies director Ted Nicolaou, Bad Channels tells the story of Dangerous Dan (Hipp) a newly employed DJ at Kdul who is returning to the airwaves after a six month suspension by the FCC for a stunt he pulled while on the air. Covering Dan’s return to the airwaves is Lisa Cummings (Quinn) who doesn’t trust Dan and thinks he’s a hoax. She becomes the butt of his jokes when she spots a UFO landing near the radio station and Dan is quick to laugh until the alien breaks into Kdul.

The Blob (1958) Criterion Collection Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
This entertaining low-budget favorite gets some well-deserved respect from the folks at Criterion. A gelatinous creature from outer space begins to devour the inhabitants of a small town. Each time it consumes a new body, it grows bigger. A couple of teens (including the wooden Steve McQueen) attempt to warn the town and save the population from certain blech! Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. directs the mayhem with a sure hand while Bart Sloane's great special effects still pack a punch. Followed by the bizarre comedy sequel, Son of Blob, in the early ’70s (directed by Larry Hagman!) and a great, underrated remake in 1988 by Chuck Russell.

Scream! Factory has announced a couple of collector's editions DVDs for die-hard horror fans this February.
First up is Prison, about a man executed for a crime he didn't commit whose ghost returns to to haunt the prison and seek revenge on an especially brutal guard. Extras include an audio commentary track with director Renny Harlin, an all-new "Making Of" featurette, and a Pdf of the first draft script.
Then we have a double feature of Terrorvision and The Video Dead. Terrorvision is about a man whose satellite dish picks up a "signal" from a distant world, causing monsters to indescriminately pop up on his TV. In the same vein, The Video Dead is about an old, haunted TV set that only plays one old zombie movie - and seems to be bringing said zombies into real life. Warning: If you listen to this B-Sides, it will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. You will find yourself humming it. You will hear it in your sleep. It will echo around in your brain non-stop. You will experience TerrorVision.

Back when producer Charles Band ran Empire Pictures, he made some really high-quality B-movies. Besides Re-Animator (which is probably the most famous of all of them), he made Ghoulies, Troll, Rawhead Rex, Intruder, Prison, From Beyond, and more.
