This post contains spoilers for "Die Hard."
Having to choose a favorite scene from "Die Hard" is like sticking to one dish in an all-you-can-eat buffet. The bounties that 1988's "Die Hard" — which is now considered one of the greatest action films of all time — offers are plentiful, but the thing it does best is establish a male protagonist who isn't invincible or immune to emotions; instead, they're as flawed and vulnerable as the average person. At the same time, however, John McClane (Bruce Willis) is anything but average, given his ability to circumvent every attempt to kill him due to sheer luck and emerge as a reluctant hero who must give into vigilantism against all odds.
The opening of "Die Hard" can be considered a solid scene unto itself. As McClane is taken to Nakatomi Plaza by his driver Argyle (De'voreaux White), their exchange allows us to learn a...

Actor Nathan Fillion had Stana Katic as a love interest for eight seasons on Castle. But other than Katic, there was another character Fillion wouldn’t have minded Rick Castle mingling with.

One of the many stories that kept Castle fans coming back to the series was Fillion’s relationship with Katic’s. The titular character, Richard Castle, and Katic’s Kate Beckett spent several seasons teasing a potential romance between each other. Katic was also excited to see if her character would ever end up with Fillion’s, which she looked forward to. Unlike some other fans, Katic felt that the show wouldn’t decline at all if its two main leads became an item.
“I think that those two characters make a lot of sense together,” Katic once told the TV Addict.

Until Hulu did the lord's work and brought back Glenn Gordon Caron's "Moonlighting" last year, the series that launched Bruce Willis' career and solidified Cybill Shepherd's had been languishing for seemingly ages in a digital netherworld where its fans could not access it and potential newcomers had zero chance of discovering it. This would've been unthinkable during the show's 1985-1987 heyday, when the live-wire romantic chemistry of its leads and the inventive mystery plotting of Caron and his writers -- who once plunged their "Moonlighting" protagonists into a Shakespearian reverie -- made it must-see television. "Moonlighting" was hilarious, smart and ridiculously sexy.
And just as fast as it peaked, it was gone.
While the rerelease of "Moonlighting" on Hulu confirmed that it was every bit as fresh and funny as we remembered, bringing it all back meant revisiting its untimely demise. How could a show with two dynamic...

For most of his career, Bruce Willis was known as an action hero, often playing cops, soldiers, or other leather-tough gentlemen of fortune. When Sylvester Stallone's nostalgia-based actioner "The Expendables" was released in 2010, Willis was one of the most prevalent credits, listed right next to Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger's names. He was, in the eyes of the public, one of America's top leading men when it came to guns and mayhem. Willis played action heroes so well, though, because of a smirking, self-deprecating quality that often undercut his capacity for violence. Willis always lent a twinkling sense of humor to his gun-toting roles, making his genre pictures unique.
It's worth remembering that before "Die Hard," Willis was best known for the 1985 TV series "Moonlighting," a romantic caper show he starred in with Cybill Shepherd. He also appeared in the critically panned but widely successful comedy "Blind Date" wherein...

Timing is everything, horses for courses, styles make fights, and every movie, no matter how packed with potential on the page, is subject to the whims of fate. And here's a casting "what if" that, had it gone a different way, might've turned one of the most beloved movies of the 1990s into a colossal flop.
Let's take a trip back to late June 1988. The summer movie season is in full swing. After a pokey start thanks to Ron Howard's Memorial Day dud "Willow," the box office has picked up under the power of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "Big," and "Coming to America." Moviegoers were gearing up for the July releases, which, with the likes of "Short Circuit 2," "Arthur 2: On the Rocks," and "License to Drive" on deck, did not look particularly promising.
And what to make of "Die Hard?" A big R-rated action movie ought to...

From 2020 to 2022, Bruce Willis cranked out a huge number of movies, most of them low-budget sci-fi/action films that all went straight-to-video, and usually playing brief, supporting roles. The many films were, by and large, panned by critics and mocked by baffled fans, all of whom wondered by Willis didn't appear to have much on-camera dialogue, or why he wasn't the lead character. In three years, he appeared in 22 movies.
In March of 2022, it was announced that Willis had been diagnosed with aphasia, a brain condition that affected his ability to speak and comprehend language. Many of the above fans expressed their deepest apologies, and even the Razzies, in a rare show of good taste, retraced Willis' Worst Actor nominations. Willis retired from acting because of his condition. In February 2023, Willis, now 69, was also diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, and he remains in the care of his family.

In Pulp Fiction Salary Discussed: Why John Travolta Was Paid $150,000 While Bruce Willis Got $800,000 (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When Pulp Fiction dropped in 1994, it wasn’t just the plot twists that had us all abuzz—it was the crazy salary disparity. John Travolta walked away with a mere $150,000. But Bruce Willis? He got a cool $800,000.
Let’s talk about Willis. By the time he stepped into the role of Butch Coolidge, he was already Hollywood stuff. He’d scored a Golden Globe for Moonlighting and defined action heroism with Die Hard, which grossed $143M. But, plot twist: Bruce needed a comeback like a boxer needs a second wind after a series of six cinematic flops.
Enter Quentin Tarantino and Pulp Fiction. Bruce slashed his usual $10M salary to just $800k—but it did pay off! After the film blew up, he returned to the ring, earning between $20M and $25M per flick.

When most television series generate will-they-or-won't-they tension, this nervous energy is usually centered on a friendly relationship threatening to blossom into romance, or an innocent romance threatening to head to the bedroom. This is something shows like "Cheers," "Frasier" and "Moonlighting" did to perfection.
"Gilligan's Island" had a completely different kind of will-they-or-won't-they going, one that involved the entire cast. Put bluntly: most episodes revolved around the possibility that the castaways — either via rescue or their own craft-constructing ingenuity — might finally get off that blasted island. And if they did get off that island, how would the show continue? After all, once they return to civilization, it's not like they're all going to move in together due to some kind of bizarre Stockholm Syndrome impulse (though I would totally watch that version of the show).
CBS abruptly canceled "Gilligan's Island" after its third season (to save "Gunsmoke" at William S.

"Die Hard" turned Bruce Willis into an action star. The actor, previously known for his role on ABC's comedy-drama "Moonlighting," introduced audiences to the reluctant everyman action hero which has since become an archetype of the genre. NYPD detective John McClane also became Willis' best-known role and remains one of the most beloved action icons to this day. Naturally, Hollywood was eager to parlay the success of the original film into a franchise, and so a sequel was quickly produced in 1990. It wasn't quite the hit and cultural touchstone that the first movie had been, but it wasn't without its charms. Then, a third movie materialized which cemented John McClane as an enduring on-screen hero.
As "Die Hard" movies go, 1995's "Die Hard with a Vengeance" is actually one of the better ones. That's mostly due to the two legacy sequels that were churned out in 2007 and 2013 being impressively forgettable.

Before Bruce Willis became a global star with the action franchise Die Hard and the horror film The Sixth Sense, he was a TV star. He rose to fame as the private detective David Addison in Moonlighting, which also featured Cybill Shepherd. The role even earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe.
While the actor then moved on to films after making the action blockbuster Die Hard, he returned as a guest star on Friends. Willis won his second Emmy for the role of Paul Stevens and the guest role was reportedly a result of a bet between him and his The Whole Nine Yards co-star Matthew Perry.

When The Simpsons debuted in 1989, its arrival coincided with another major development: the creation of the World Wide Web, which helped expand the internet into something that became a part of everyday life. Although the internet’s expansion wasn’t fully realized until 1993, newsgroups started becoming a popular way for people (initially college students) to discuss their shared interests.
One of these newsgroups was alt.tv.simpsons, which originated in March 1990, a mere four months after the show’s premiere. It quickly gained popularity as fans would watch the show together and share their favorite Simpsons jokes and quotes. They would also, of course, share their opinions on each episode. And around Season Four, these opinions began to turn more critical — something even the show’s writers took notice of. “We thought we’d find some praise there. We were wrong,” former writer Josh Weinstein recently tweeted about the newsgroup.

Homicide: Life on the Street is streaming on Peacock, bringing joy to fans of its original ’90s run, fans of Andre Braugher, and those who will become fans after their first viewing.
This popular and critically beloved show has been available on DVD for years but was Mia on any streaming service until now.
Homicide: Life on the Street joins two other classic shows, Moonlighting and Northern Exposure, that were lost to streaming until recently.

Like Homicide: Life on the Street, these two shows had at least been available for purchase on DVD, whereas many other shows from that era weren’t so lucky.
Since streaming is how most people access visual media these days, just how many other forgotten gems of TV history are we missing out on?

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Pegasus", Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is reunited with Admiral Erik Pressman (Terry O'Quinn), his former commanding officer on board a ship called the U.S.S. Pegasus. Pressman is visiting the Enterprise to reveal that Starfleet intelligence has located the missing Pegasus, presumably destroyed 15 years ago. It's their mission to either salvage the Pegasus or destroy it before nearby Romulans can cannibalize its technology.
In some meaningful asides, Riker and Pressman talk about the "final mission" of the Pegasus, and how there are some things they have been keeping secret for the last 15 years, hoping that Starfleet never finds out. Like most Admirals on "Star Trek," Pressman is up to something shady, and he had convinced a young Ensign Riker to go along with it. Because Pressman is played by Terry O'Quinn, audiences were likely suspicious immediately; O'Quinn was an expert...

Although "Die Hard" is now considered one of the most successful and influential action thrillers of all time, it's worth remembering that nothing about its success was guaranteed. Because the movie was technically based on a sequel novel to the 1966 bestseller "The Detective," which was turned into a '68 movie starring Frank Sinatra, the studio was forced to offer the main role in "Die Hard" to Frank Sinatra first. Sinatra (who was pushing 70 at the time) said no, and few big-name celebrities wanted to be the guy to take his place.
After Paul Newman, Harrison Ford, and Richard Gere all declined the main role, the studio found Bruce Willis. Willis was already famous thanks to the hit ABC series "Moonlighting," but he had not yet made a major jump to film and it wasn't clear if he could pull it off. Cleveland rocks! And so does Plex because that streaming service is now offering The Drew Carey Show, marking the first time that the long-running sitcom has ever been available on such a format for free. So crack open a Buzz Beer and let’s get this binge-watch going!
Just this month — 20 years after its ninth and final season concluded — The Drew Carey Show finally got a proper streaming release for free. While you’ll have to sit through ads, just be happy that it’s here in the most widely available way since it aired on ABC.
So what took so long? Like so many series, The Drew Carey Show, it comes down to music rights. This was something Carey himself had previously discussed, telling TV Insider the show was “not in syndication…because of music rights and stuff…We’re going to try to change that around and get it back out there.

Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), the big-hearted, fast-talking cop at the center of Bad Monkey, has a way of stumbling into trouble. Based on Carl Hiassen’s 2013 bestselling novel of the same name, the series begins with a severed arm turning up in a tourist’s sport-fishing catch off the Florida Keys. Yancy’s boss, Sheriff Sonny Summers (Todd Allen Durkin), wants to avoid the hassle of an investigation and offers Yancy—who’s been suspended for assaulting the husband of his sometime girlfriend, Bonnie (Michelle Monaghan)—a deal: If he wants his badge back, he must make the arm (and the case) disappear.

Kevin Smith Once Said Working With Bruce Willis Was “Soul-Crushing”. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When Director Kevin Smith heard he was going to Direct Bruce Willis in the 2010 comedy Cop Out, he was delighted. Bruce Willis was a childhood hero of Smith’s, who grew up watching the Dire Hard actor in the 1985 show Moonlighting. However, the director later came to regret working with Willis, describing the experience as soul-crushing.
After Smith was tapped to direct Bruce Willis he gushed on MySpace how he had worked on “a flick that’d reveal a heretofore unrealised dream I’d unwittingly harbored since I first watched David Addison limbo in the Moonlighting Detective Agency offices 20 years prior.”
However, in an interview with Cinemabled, Smith claimed that Willis was difficult to work with and alleged the actor was intentionally messing up his scenes. Smith recalled Bruce Willis chastising him after he tried to direct him in a scene.

The great Frederick Wiseman gave writers some famous advice, which “Between The Temples” co-writer C. Mason Wells brought up at a Morning Coffee panel at the 2024 Nantucket Film Festival: “Marry rich.”
Nantucket and its $28 hamburgers probably isn’t a bad place to hunt for someone with that sort of financial independence — but in fairness to the Nantucket Film Festival, it also has had an abiding love for writers and the craft of writing’s contribution to the filmmaking process. Its awards celebrate both emerging and established screenwriters and television writers.

When was Bruce Willis at the peak of his popularity? It’s hard to say because, truth be told, the man has been a superstar for almost as long as I’ve been alive. When I was in Kindergarten, he was rockin’ the airwaves on Moonlighting and cutting an album, peddling Seagram’s Wine Coolers and starring in hit movies like Blind Date, and this was Before Die Hard. Yet, that 1988 movie took him to another level, with Die Hard 2 and The Last Boy Scout solidifying him as a major, major action star. Yet, one movie almost always overlooked in his filmography is a thriller he did for Sony Pictures that was sandwiched between two against-type turns, one being in Death Becomes Her, the other being in Pulp Fiction. The movie is Striking Distance, and it’s the subject of this month’s The Best Movie You Never Saw!

The streets are about to stream, as David Simon has announced that plans have moved forward to bring Homicide: Life on the Street to your TV sometime in the future. The groundbreaking series – a precursor to Simon’s The Wire – has been tied up in music rights limbo for years but now that red tape has been cleared, we’ll soon enough be crossing the police tape.
As David Simon posted on X, “Word is that NBC has managed to finally secure the music rights necessary to sell Homicide: Life On The Streets” to a streaming platform. Andre, Richard, Yaphet, Ned, and so many others who labored on that wonderful show on both sides of the camera will soon regain a full share of their legacy. Stay tuned for more details.” He would go on to credit showrunner Tom Fantana, EP Barry Levinson and producer Gail Mutrux for their efforts...

Ensembles are the lifeblood of television. "Scooby-Doo" had the Mystery Machine team. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" had the Scooby Gang (no relation). "Riverdale" had its polycule, which it ultimately dubbed the "Quad." With its distinctive blend of humor and horror, Hart Hanson's "Bones" followed the motley crew at the Jeffersonian Institute as they cracked murder cases week in, week out. But when you really drill down to its core, you'll find that a lot of the show's most endearing players weren't around for as long as you might think.
Takes Dr. Sweets. Everybody's favorite nerdy FBI psychologist infamously died a heartbreaking premature death after John Francis Daley's directing career went into overdrive. Still, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that he didn't actually show up until season 3, episode 4, "The Secret in the Soil," considering he ultimately appeared in an eye-watering 138 episodes (albeit out of 246 total). The same goes for Cam.

When it comes to the race to win an Emmy, there will be a collective buzz around the award’s 60+ categories until Sept. 15 when we find out who gets the gold.
Arguably one of the most highly competitive awards doesn’t happen at the main event but the weekend before at the Creative Arts ceremony. That’s when the winners in the four guest performer categories (which include guest actor and actress in both comedy and drama genres) are awarded for a one-time or re-curring role. (Think Jamie Lee Curtis’ two-episode performance on FX’s “The Bear” — a likely candidate.)
In looking back at early precursors, this award has quite a checkered past with numerous category name changes and head-scratching nominee groupings over the years. For example, in 1977, the bracket was called outstanding single appearance in a comedy or drama series. There was no separation by genre, so nominees included...

In 1988, Bruce Willis committed a most grievous offense against entertainment journalists: he proved them wrong. Really wrong. Laughably wrong.
The newly minted star of ABC's "Moonlighting" drew the ire of just about everyone in Hollywood when 20th Century Fox paid him a whopping $5 million to star in the action film "Die Hard." This rankled rival studio executives, who only shelled out that kind of cash for long-established leading men like Warren Beatty and Robert Redford. While Willis might've been a minor media sensation due to "Moonlighting," with his surprise Billboard smash "The Return of Bruno" and his omnipresent Bartles and Jaymes wine cooler commercials, he had yet to prove himself worthy of a $5 million big-screen payday.
Before "Die Hard," Willis had scored a solid theatrical hit with Blake Edwards' dismally unfunny "Blind Date." This was the extent of his motion picture oeuvre when Fox declared him a massive marquee name.

I grew up in the time of the Chuck Norris joke. I didn’t even really know who he was apart from the Walker, Texas Ranger guy who Conan O’Brien would pull a lever to get just the most random, out of context clip. I remember seeing the Chuck Norris joke book in a Barnes and Noble store and leafing through it only to find a bunch of absolutely absurd and comically over the top things that Chuck Norris could and would do to you or what he kept behind his beard. It was enough for me to start looking at his overall contribution to film and much of it was action. I found him teaming up with the likes of Lee Marvin in The Delta Force or going up against the great Christopher Lee in An Eye for an Eye. There’s also a great fight he had with...

Susan Seidelman's 1985 comedy "Desperately Seeking Susan" is about an unhappy housewife named Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) who notices that two people appear to be communicating through mutually placed personal ads in her local newspaper. The correspondents are "Jim" and "Susan," and Roberta becomes involved in their progressing print-only drama. Audiences also see that Susan (Madonna) is an itinerant drifter who is having an affair with a mobster. She is involved in a crime drama of her own. All the same, Roberta manages to see a meeting between Susan and Jim from afar and then buys some of Susan's clothes after Susan sells them to a thrift store.
Naturally, through some exciting contrivances, Roberta is not only mistaken for Susan, but she hits her head and contracts amnesia, soon believing that she, too, is Susan. It's an exciting, high-concept comedy that introduced Madonna to the world and was inspired by Jacque...

The pitch was "Rambo in an office building." In the 1980s, the idea of a Rambo type in anything, anywhere would at least get your project shuttled down the studio production pipeline. 20th Century Fox rightly believed they had a potential winner in "Die Hard." So why was the project anathema to every A-list movie star in Hollywood?
Perhaps it was the pedigree. "Die Hard" was an adaptation of Roderick Thorp's action novel "Nothing Lasts Forever," the author's 1979 sequel to his 1966 bestseller "The Detective." That cop thriller had been turned into a 1968 star vehicle for Frank Sinatra, who was nearing the end of his 1960s big-screen comeback. It was a solid hit for 20th Century Fox, but, despite a feint toward grittiness, it was viewed as nothing more than a paycheck gig for the Chairman.
So 20 years later, when Fox spied blockbuster potential in Thorp's sequel (which was...

While Renny Harlin was promoting his film, The Bricklayer, JoBlo asked him about the making of Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and he had high praise for star Bruce Willis, who he compared, favourably, to the new generation of action stars, who seem reluctant to ever allow themselves to get beaten up on-screen, Willis never had this issue, said Harlin: “I really wanted Bruce Willis to get really screwed up. His face is a bloody mess by the end of the movie, and like you said, it really does make the character more heroic. They are really taking punishment and keep going.”
However, as we reported a little while back, there was one line Willis didn’t love in Die Hard 2: Just the fax, ma’am…

Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette chaired a career masterclass this afternoon at Series Mania in Lille, France, where she served as this year’s guest of honor.
Topics up for discussion during the session ranged from Arquette’s childhood growing up on a “hippie” commune with her parents in rural Virginia alongside her career as an actress, working with filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Richard Linklater, and David Lynch.
“He gives you a lot of freedom,” Arquette said of Lynch, whom she worked with on his 1997 surrealist feature Lost Highway.

Growing up with Nick at Nite, there was one classic series that I adored above all others: "I Dream of Jeannie." Comparisons to that other '60s rom-com fantasy about a supernatural lady causing mayhem in the suburbs be damned, Sidney Sheldon's sitcom was just the blast of silliness that I craved as a kiddo.
As an adult, I've also come to appreciate that easily-rattled U.S. Air Force pilot Anthony "Tony" Nelson (Larry Hagman), his amiable buddy and co-worker Roger Healey (Bill Daily), and Barbara Eden's trouble-making, wish-granting genie ... Jeannie were clearly in a throuple but had to play coy about it to avoid ruffling their neighbors' feathers. Not that they were all that careful about maintaining their cover, what with Roger constantly strolling into Tony and Jeannie's humble abode uninvited with the casualness of someone who definitely doesn't secretly live there. Y'all ain't as slick as you think you are!

Eighties television was a land of new ideas that hadn’t been seen before. It was also a place where old tropes were made shiny and new with a modern sheen that intrigued audiences and would produce classics like the hospital drama St. Elsewhere and the crime drama Hill Street Blues.
It would be a humdinger of a decade within the genre of mystery and detectives. The close-knit "Star Trek" family has lost one of their own today. Actor Gary Graham, most well-known for playing the role of the Vulcan Ambassador Soval in "Star Trek: Enterprise," sadly passed away early in the morning January 23, 2024. His death was first announced in a Facebook post by his ex-wife and actor Susan Lavelle (viaParade.com). No cause of death has yet been revealed, except that it was described as "sudden." Graham was 73 years old.
In addition to starring in "Enterprise" and even showing up for a brief appearance in "Star Trek: Voyager," Graham was more than willing to lend his talents to various roles in "Star Trek" fan films throughout the years, bringing Soval back to life in several unofficial movies that may not be formally sanctioned in the official canon of the franchise, but nonetheless speaks to the actor's passion for the character and his appreciation for the Trekkie community.

The phone rang and rang until he realized he had called his own home, and was struck by the fear of how he would have reacted if he had answered the phone at home on the other end of the line. It is, of course, an impossible scenario, but one that became the idea for his short story "Shatterday," in which a man's life and sanity are utterly shattered after he comes in contact with a better version of himself.
