Despite Automan being the result of a computer hologram come to life, no computer animation was used to create the effects. Only traditional animation and editing techniques were used.
A video game based on this series produced by Bug-Byte Software was released for the Commodore 64 platform in 1985.
According to Chuck Wagner, he based his performance on William Shatner as Captain Kirk in Star Trek (1966) of which he is a big fan.
Glen A. Larson was inspired to create the series after seeing Tron (1982). Producer Donald Kushner also produced that film.
