Female DEFA-director Ingrid Reschke made preparations for the film, but her life was tragically cut short in a car accident, and Heiner Carow took over the project. He dedicated the film to her memory.
The film disappeared from East-German TV after both protagonists had fled the country in 1980 and 1982 respectively.
Erich Honecker, political leader of the German Democratic Republic, personally viewed the film just hours before its premiere to give the green light for its release.
Paul's son Michael was played by the real son of actor Winfried Glatzeder.
