Soldier's Girl (2003 TV Movie)
9/10
It's 20 years old now and it is more timely than ever

It's a shame that this was made for television as I would have liked to have seen what impact it would have had in theaters at the time it was made. It certainly reached a larger audience this way though and that's a good thing. I hadn't seen this in nearly 20 years and it has dated a little bit, but it's still a powerful piece sadly based on true events during the idiotic "Don't ask, don't tell" period in the military. The unusual tale of a presumably straight man entering the Airborne Infantry and falling in love with a male who is transitioning to become a female. Troy Garity is excellent as the soldier in question and while he's had a long career since then, he's never had a role quite like this and I'm not sure he has ever been better. Lee Pace, remarkably in his film debut, is sometimes just mesmerizing and he too has gone on to have a long and successful career since this. Making it even more remarkable to pull this role off is that he is 6 foot 5 inches tall! This is a wonderful love story, but it is also a tragic one. It's touching, moving, sad and important. The very latter stages get a little heavy handed in TV movie tradition in that era, but that doesn't take away from the emotional impact that this film has. It's quite unlike any other and it's rather special.
