Gary Cooper is "Good Sam" in this 1948 film also starring Ann Sheridan, Ray Collins, and Joan Lorring.
Sam is a notorious do-gooder who lends money like he has it, co-signs for loans, takes people in, let's the neighbors use his car, and invites people in for meals, to the consternation of his long-suffering wife Lu (Sheridan).
When they have a chance to finally buy a home, Lu finds out their savings went to a pregnant couple and their fledgling gas station business.
This was a Leo McCarey film that ruined his record of hits. It's not hilariously funny and one becomes frustrated with Sam's over-generosity when his own family is having problems. There are some good scenes and performances but somehow, it doesn't hit the mark. It could have been much better.
