Phil Mattingly is being promoted to CNN’s chief White House correspondent, following the departure of Kaitlan Collins to the network’s revitalized morning show.
Mattingly previously served as senior White House correspondent covering the Biden administration. He previously was a congressional correspondent. He joined the network in 2015 and covered Republican candidates on the campaign trail, including Chris Christie, John Kasich, and Donald Trump. On the White House beat, he broke news including Biden’s plans to sanction Vladimir Putin, details on a multinational effort to target Russian supply chains and developments on the president’s Opec negotiations.
Collins served as chief White House correspondent since the start of the Biden administration, but left the beat to serve as co-host of CNN This Morning along with Poppy Harlow and Don Lemon.

Jake Tapper, the Washington-based correspondent for CNN, will likely get a new spotlight at the network after it said it would expand his weekday program to two hours and make him the lead anchor for all Washington events. The move is part of a broader shakeup of the cable-news outlet’s Washington coverage, which has taken over more of its schedule in the last few months of the Trump administration.
As part of the changes, Abby Phillip will take over as anchor of the weekend broadcast of “Inside Politics,” while Dana Bash will co-anchor the Sunday talk program “State of the Union” with Tapper. Tapper and Bash will each anchor two Sundays a month, beginning January 24th.
CNN placed other prominent Washington operatives in new slots. Jim Acosta, whose profile has grown as CNN’s chief White House correspondent, will take on weekend anchoring duties of a program that will...

The 2020 election has strangely felt both more and less present a part of life than it’d have seemed likely on January 1: It’s more with us because of the heightened tensions stoked by our president, with his supporters and detractors feeling a sense of urgency about how they’ll vote, and it’s less with us because of everything else. It can be easy to forget this is an election year when thinking about all the other things that make 2020 itself — a somewhat startling way in which Covid-19, the economic devastation it has wrought, and a simultaneous awakening around racial justice have worked in tandem to break TV news’s addiction to the endless campaign.

"How do you do it?!" HBO Max / CNN Films have released an official trailer for a journalism documentary called On the Trail, titled in full: On the Trail: Inside the 2020 Primaries. Developed internally by CNN, the doc film takes viewers behind-the-scenes to provide a "front-row seat to history for a glimpse into what it takes to cover a presidential campaign." The focus is on the powerhouse female journalists at CNN, set against the backdrop of one of the wildest elections in American history. Which is a bit of a soft way to describe what's happening. "CNN offered unprecedented access to their coverage, going out of their way to include names news junkies and casual viewers alike have come to know." Including: Dana Bash, Kaitlan Collins, Jessica Dean, Daniella Diaz, Annie Grayer, Kyung Lah, Mj Lee, Abby Phillip, Arlette Saenz, and Jasmine Wright. It's impressive how fast they took current events...
