The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Alongside exclusives like Secret Santa and Night of the Missing and such classics as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, here are five Christmas horror recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Christmas Evil
Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

Finnish writer-director Jalmari Helander returns with an outrageously violent and deliriously entertaining WWII action movie that’s an absolute must-see if you’re a fan of exploding Nazis. An inspired mash-up of Inglourious Basterds, Road Runner cartoons and Liam Neeson vengeful-old-man thrillers, it’s a wild ride from beginning to end.
Sisu opens with a caption that explains the title as an untranslateable Finnish word for “a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination … [manifested] when all hope is lost.” A further caption then sets the scene – it’s 1944 and the defeated Nazis are retreating from Finland, but not without destroying everything in their path.
We’re then introduced to grizzled prospector Aatami (Jorma Tommila), described by a voiceover as “one man who has decided to leave the war behind him, for good.” Accompanied...

Our film tells us that Sisu is an untranslatable Finnish word, for extreme courage. I would debate who that word is supposed to apply to, as our protagonist here is an unfeeling mass murderer Perhaps it refers best to the rape victims of the Nazis, doing their best to survive.
Sisu had me thinking about real history. If I were to create a list of all the peoples and counties who had a legitimate beef with Nazi Germany, during the Second World War the Jews would be at the top and Finland would be at the very bottom. Finland was in a horrible position (literally) as it fought a nasty civil war, to keep Stalin from taking control of their country, but in doing so they signed a pact with the devil, and for most of the war,...

Sisu is a film written and directed by Jalmari Helander starring Jorma Tommila.
Plot
During World War II, a lone man finds gold. On his way, the Nazi army tries to steal it, but they’ll meet a man who is very tenacious when defending his gold.
Sisu (2022) About the film
Extravagant, gory, funny and ironic. An action film plagued with sanguinary scenes and viscera everywhere, yes, but also a film created from the editing room with a production that, although modest, bets on the spectacularity of its images and the rhythm of the shots.
A film created out of editing and sound, very well directed and to which you can only object (if you want) to the bloody scenes. If you don’t fancy that, don’t watch it, but if you are in the mood for a well-done (and gory) action, Sisu is quite an opportunity.

Set during the final days of World War II, Sisu boasts an impressive roster of characters, played by a talented cast. Featuring one action set piece after another, Sisu brims with relentless gore as it follows the journey of an unforgiving former commando named Aatami, who stands tall in the face of danger and stops at nothing to serve justice to wrongdoers. Owing to his unrelenting grit and determination, he goes on a rampage against Nazis when they attempt to steal gold from him.
While Sisu's one-man death squad narrative may seem familiar, the movie is already being lauded by critics for its crowd-pleasing delivery of exactly what it promises. Given how it is Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander's third film after his critically acclaimed Big Game and Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, its early critical acclaim is not surprising. However, other than Jalmari Helander's directorial forte, Sisu's success can...

Writer/Director Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports, Big Game) is back this year with Lionsgate’s Sisu, and today the official image gallery for the bloody genre movie has opened up.
Sisu opens only in theaters on April 28, 2023. Watch the Red Band trailer here.
This time, Helander reteams with Rare Exports actor Jorma Tommila for one epic and hyper-violent period adventure through the wilderness of Lapland in Northern Finland.
“During the last desperate days of WWII, a solitary prospector crosses paths with Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover that they have just tangled with no ordinary miner. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word “sisu”, this legendary ex-commando will embody what sisu means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And no matter what the Nazis throw at him, the...

Lionsgate is teaming up with Stage 6 Films, Subzero Film Entertainment, and Good Chaos to give the World War II action movie Sisu, a Finnish production, a theatrical release in the United States on April 28th – and with that date just a couple months away, a trailer for Sisu has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

"You'll see what happens when you take everything from him." Lionsgate has revealed an official US trailer for the most awesome Finnish action movie Sisu, arriving in US theaters this April. Finally!! I saw this at the Sitges Film Festival last fall and it absolutely Rules. When an ex-soldier discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness and tries to take the loot back home, Nazi soldiers led by a brutal SS officer battle him. Jorma Tommila stars as Aatami, who takes on the entire Nazi battalion himself. "Sisu" is a Finnish idea described as "stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery" - and this movie embodies that perfectly. The cast also includes Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, & Onni Tommila. I raved in my review: "This guy is now an action cinema icon, all hail Jorma Tommila!! Even if it is an obvious homage to Mad Max, Tommila's mostly dialogue-free performance is the epitome of awesome.

As they say here north of the border: Time to drop the puck on the 2022 Toronto Film Festival.
The weather is beautiful, and they’ve cordoned off King Street from the Lightbox to Roy Thomson Hall. People are getting their bearings, most not wearing masks in the open air. This is a sight better than last year, when the cable cars were not rerouted from King Street because so few came for the festivities. Not surprisingly, not a single major deal happened on the ground as the festivals and specialty theatrical business were still feeling the fallout from Covid.
Toronto Film Festival: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Will this year be any better? Some believe it certainly can’t get worse. Buyers and sellers expect the pace to be on the slow side, with some possible exceptions. I hear that the hot title is one that isn’t officially on the for-sale lists,...

When you have a film with Samuel L. Jackson as the President of the United States you would expect him to take centre stage. When his co-star is Rare Export’s Onni Tommila though he can expect to have lost the spotlight… Which is very much the case with Big Game.
Tommila plays Oskari, a thirteen-year-old boy venturing out into the wilderness in a hunting coming-of-age ritual. Expected to return after a few days of hunting with a trophy to signify the kill, nobody expects him to find the biggest game of them all, the William Alan Moore, the President of America (Samuel L. ★★★☆☆ "This is not a good idea." Uttered around the halfway mark by Samuel L. Jackson's nonplussed President William Moore, this neatly summarises the thesis of Jalmari Helander's Big Game (2014), an imperfect but enjoyable mixture of McTiernan-esque violence, Bruckheimer-esque silliness and 1980s-vintage Spielberg kids' adventure. Indeed, Big Game's veering tone often threatens to derail the audience's suspension of disbelief, which is saved, by a thread, by a welcome and surprisingly un-badass turn from Jackson's President Moore and the exceedingly likeable youth, Oskari (Onni Tommila), clearly having a blast playing Potus' diminutive, self-appointed bodyguard.

New Indie: So if the phrase “Samuel L. Jackson is the President” doesn’t automatically do it for you, maybe “from the director of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale” will. In either event, you’ll have a blast with Big Game (Anchor Bay Entertainment), starring Jackson as a Potus who finds himself stranded in Finland after Air Force One crashes, eluding would-be kidnappers with only the assistance of a young boy (Onni Tommila) on a survival quest, armed with nothing but a bow and arrow. It’s the highest of concepts, reuniting Tommila with his Rare Exports director Jalmari Helander, but there’s a lot to like in this action extravaganza, not least of which is an ensemble cast that also includes Victor Garber, Ray Stevenson, Ted Levine...

The Finnish film Big Game is based on an outrageous idea that started as a joke between filmmakers. The Us president’s plane crashes in the Finnish woods enroute to a conference. He is alone and finds himself in the midst of a far reaching conspiracy with only a young boy to help. Samuel L. Jackson is the president; Victor Garber is his Vice President, Felicity Huffman the CIA Director and Jim Broadbent a mysterious figure in the Pentagon. We spoke via Helsinki with Big Game director, Finland’s Jalmari Helander and Onni Tommila who plays the heroic boy in this remarkable […]...

Here are 2 other films opening in limited theatrical releases in the USA this weekend that you may not be as familiar with, as you likely are with the 2 wide releases ("Ted 2" and "Max")... First, Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp is distributing the Samuel L. Jackson actioner "Big Game," which is Finnish director Jalmari Helander’s English-language debut. Jackson co-stars (playing the President of the USA) alongside Onni Tommila. The film follows a shy 13-year-old boy named Oskari (played by Tommila), who must prove his manhood by spending a night alone in the forest, when Air Force One is shot down by terrorists and Oskari discovers the President (Samuel...

Rules of the Game: Helander’s Schlocky English Language Debut
Even though the film seems perfectly well aware of its own silliness as it recapitulates formulaic American action cinema tropes of days past, Finnish director Jalmari Helander’s Big Game never manages to elevate itself beyond a mere dose of basic mimicry. A follow-up to his cult audience courting debut, the strange evil Santa Claus movie Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, it would appear the filmmaker prizes his own amusement over his audience’s, at least judging from the inescapable hokiness tinging the film.
Where his first film displayed playfulness with its dark humor and memorable action sequences, he’s returned with a different set of vintage inspirations. At times entertaining, especially concerning its unique blend of cultures, and with surprisingly adept special effects sequences, this is goofy fun as long as you can keep your expectations in check.

Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander, who made the fiendishly dark and wonderfully bonkers Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, goes Hollywood with a romp about a 12-year-old boy who rescues the President of the United States when Air Force One crashes in the Alps of Finland. There aren’t really mountains that look anything like the Alps in Finland, apparently, but substituting Bavaria for Scandinavia is still more plausible that this embarrassingly bad action comedy; it’s actually more like Helander went made-for-basic-cable rather than Hollywood. "Say cheese," the final words spoken in Big Game, could not be more appropriate for this Finnish/British/German co-production from Rare Exports director Jalmari Helander.
This is a cheap and charming throwback to action movies of the '80s and '90s, an era before spandex-clad superheroes dominated the multiplexes. Think of it as a blend of Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Last Action Hero, but aimed squarely at the younger crowd.
Samuel L Jackson is top-billed playing the President of the United States, who finds himself lost in the wilderness of Finland after Air Force One gets blasted out of the sky by terrorists. His only hope for survival is Oskari (Onni Tommila), a young boy thrown into the woods by...

Samuel L Jackson leads a batty comedy thriller from the director of Rare Exports. Here's Ryan's review of Big Game...
Released in 2010, Rare Exports was a mischievous comic horror film about a small Finnish town menaced by a feral Santa Claus. Action thriller Big Game marks writer-director Jalmari Helander’s English-language debut, and like Rare Exports, it mischievously plays with the expectations of its genre.
Set in the mountains of northern Finland, it introduces Oskari (Onni Tommila, the returning star of Rare Exports), a 13-year-old boy nervously attempting to pass a coming-of-age test. It’s the custom in Oskari’s community for a boy to head out into the forest and hunt down the biggest animal he can find; as one elder puts it, “A boy goes into the wilderness and comes back as a man.”
The problem is, Oskari’s far from a born hunter; unlike his father (Jorma Tommila...

To throw your child off a roof for her own safety, you have to be stuck in a really dire situation. Such a hellish, last resort scenario is experienced by Jack Dwyer (Owen Wilson) in the first trailer for No Escape, a thriller featured along with Big Game in our latest trailer round-up. No Escape (formerly titled The Coup) comes from the writing duo of brothers John Erick and Drew Dowdle (As Above/So Below, Quarantine) and stars Wilson and Lake Bell as Americans caught up in a coup. To get their daughters to a U.S. Embassy alive, they must rely on each other and their friend Hammond (Pierce Brosnan). Big Game, meanwhile, comes from Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale writer/director Jalmari Helander and stars Samuel L. Jackson as an on-the-run President of the United States who is striving to survive in Finland after Air Force One is shot down.

When did I realise Big Game was going to be absolutely insane? It was probably 30 seconds into this trailer, when Ray Stevenson jumped out of Air Force One, dodging missles on the way down. Yes, Big Game is that kind of movie. Coming from Rare Exports' Jalmari Helander, Big Game sees Samuel L. Jackson as the U.S. President, forced to team with a young Finnish boy (Onni Tommila) when Air Force One is shot down by terrorists and crash lands in the rugged countryside of Finland. This new trailer does a fantastic job of selling Big Game as a balls to the wall action movie where you can accept logic being thrown out the window if it means you get the sight of Jackson trapped in a freezer as it falls into a ravine. This should be perfect Summer action movie fodder. Released: June 26th...

In the rugged countryside of Finland, a young thirteen-year-old (Onni Tommila) embarks on a traditional quest to prove himself by spending 24 hours alone in the wild, armed with only a bow and arrow. After witnessing a spectacular crash, he discovers the escape pod from Air Force One, containing the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson). When they realize a group of kidnappers is hot on their trail with the intention of taking the president, this unlikely duo must escape their hunters as they search for the American Special Forces team sent out to find them.

This latest trailer for Samuel L. Jackson’s upcoming movie affirms what most of us already suspected; Big Game is a fun-time romp that doesn’t take itself seriously. After all, how can anyone with a shred of humor expect to believe that a United States President would able to fend off a pack of roving terrorists… in the cold, isolated wilderness of Finland?
That’s exactly the disbelief we should suspend, however, for Jalmari Helander’s latest actioner. As mentioned briefly above, Jackson plays the Potus, who is forced to abandon Air Force One after it begins to descend into the Finnish woods. Naturally, he survives the crash and teams up with a 13-year old boy who helps him fight off the aforementioned baddies.

Samuel L. Jackson is bringing back the '90s action movie in high flying style in Jamari Helander's "Big Game." After kicking off the Midnight Madness section at Tiff last September, the action picture earned positive reviews for its guilty pleasure callbacks to '80s/'90s-era action-adventure blockbusters and its impressive production value. "Big Game" follows a 13-year-old boy (newcomer Onni Tommila) who, after taking part in a tradition where he must spend one day and one night alone in the wilderness to prove himself a man, discovers the President of the United States (Jackson) in an Air Force One escape pod. As terrorists make their way towards the crash site in order to kidnap the President, the unlikely duo team up for a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. The film co-stars Ray Stevenson, Mehmet Kurtulus, Victor Garber, Ted Levine, Felicity Huffman and Jim Broadbent. EuropaCorp will release the film...
