Like science fiction and fantasy, films in the horror genre have permission to bend the laws of reality, as long as audiences can still follow the story. No one is too concerned that "Halloween" slasher Michael Meyers is somehow invincible and impossible to kill, because that lore was established in the first film and continued throughout the confusing, timeline-erasing franchise. What's not to understand?
On the other hand, plenty of films over the years have left audiences scratching their heads as they exit the theater. Is Leonardo DiCaprio dreaming or awake at the end of "Inception" and does it really matter? Was anything in "Mulholland Drive" real? You might give yourself a headache pondering the answers to those knotty questions.
Horror movies tend to use this kind of uncertainty to frighten viewers, leaving them unsettled and disturbed as the credits roll. This is the worst kind of perplexing ending, because you're not only confused,...

After 12 years, five seasons, and a revival aided by Canadian rapper Drake, the thrilling UK crime drama Top Boy has ended fittingly for a show that had become known for its authentic reflection of a specific part of British culture.
Through the story of drug leaders and best friends Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane ‘Kano’ Robinson), viewers witnessed how the dreams of young men wanting to provide for their family and overcome the poor hand they’ve been dealt leads to a life of crime – the only option they feel is open to them. From building a drug empire to violently fighting – and often killing – those who threaten to take their positions, the Summerhouse Estate has gone through a lot to make those dreams come true. But in the final season, Top Boy shows those dreams becoming closer to a nightmare.

It all comes down to this. The final season of Netflix's "Top Boy" is just days away. After more than 10 years, the streamer will be airing the final season, and it's bound to be an intense one.
For the uninitiated, the show follows drug dealers Sully (Kane Robinson) and Dushane (Ashley Walters) as they navigate a scene of gang violence in Hackney, East London. The show first aired on the UK's Channel 4 in 2011 before being canceled. Drake then revived the show in 2017, with the help of Netflix, of course.
In the previous seasons, we've seen Sully and Dushane work together to run a drug empire and turn rivals. From turf wars to prison breakouts, there's never been a dull moment, mostly because no character can be fully trusted. There have been some iconic scenes, from the comedic to the downright shocking. Curtis's (Howard Charles) most evil moments rival any TV villain,...

“Bad Sisters” had a terrific night at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday 14, May. After winning Best Titles and Graphic Identity at the BAFTA Craft Awards, the Apple TV+ show took home Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress for Anne-Marie Duff on the Sunday just gone, bringing its awards total up to three BAFTAs.
The show follows the five Garvey sisters, led by Sharon Horgan‘s Eva, who all try to kill the abusive husband (Claes Bang‘s Jp) of Duff’s Grace. Meanwhile, two insurance agents (Brian Gleeson‘s Thomas and Daryl McCormack‘s Matthew) attempt to prove the sisters’ involvement in Jp’s death. As Grace, Duff gets the plumb role of the show — combining both ferocity and vulnerability to give a performance that ultimately becomes the heart of the series.

Sharon Horgan could be set to follow in the footsteps of another acclaimed multi-hyphenate, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, by earning Emmy bids for both writing and starring in a beloved show. While Waller-Bridge achieved that feat for her comedy “Fleabag,” Horgan could do it for her Apple TV+ drama “Bad Sisters.” Horgan co-created, starred in, and wrote several episodes of this hit show, which follows the five Garvey sisters who plot to murder John Paul (Claes Bang), the abusive husband of Anne-Marie Duff‘s Grace Garvey.
The show flashes between two timelines — one in which the sisters try to kill John Paul and one in which a pair of insurance investigators (Brian Gleeson‘s Thomas and Daryl McCormack‘s Matthew) try to prove the sisters’ involvement in John Paul’s death to save their own business.
Horgan teamed up with “New Girl” scribes Brett Baer and Dave Finkel to adapt the hit Belgian show “Clan.

“Bad Sisters” doesn’t have a good Rotten Tomatoes score, it has a perfect one. The Apple TV+ drama series merits a jaw-dropping 100% on this site that aggregates reviews.
Created by Sharon Horgan, Dave Finkel, and Brett Baer, “Bad Sisters” follows the five Garvey sisters (led by Horgan’s eldest sister Eva) as they try to kill Claes Bang‘s John Paul, the abusive husband of Grace Garvey (Anne-Marie Duff). The action moves between two timelines. The first follows the sisters plotting John Paul’s murder while the second shows two insurance agents (Brian Gleeson‘s Thomas and Daryl McCormack‘s Matthew) trying to prove that the sisters were involved in John Paul’s death in a desperate attempt to save their business.
The juxtaposing timelines make for a whip-smart drama full of pitch-black comedy and pitch-perfect performances. It’s obvious why the show has received that perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

[This story contains spoilers for The Mandalorian “Chapter 24: The Return.”]
On Wednesday, The Mandalorian season three finale wrapped up Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Bo-Katan Kryze’s (Katee Sackhoff) journey to reclaim Mandalore for the displaced and scattered Mandalorian people. In the process, it helped drive home that the series is bringing a narrative focus to Star Wars as it plots its return to the big screen in coming years.
In an action-packed 40-minutes, Din and Bo-Katan defeat Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), who was revealed this season to have escaped capture, while also effectively cloning himself to create an unstoppable force-sensitive clone army. The season’s penultimate episode also revealed Gideon’s involvement with the Shadow Council, a group of Empire loyalists that are working to overthrow the New Republic.
These are developments that not only serve Din and Grogu’s storyline, but also drive forward to support a greater Star Wars narrative as a whole.

It’s been a good awards season so far for the Gleeson clan. The Irish acting family made strong impacts on the big and small screens. Now brothers Domhnall Gleeson and Brian Gleeson could both be Emmy nominees for their performances in “The Patient” and “Bad Sisters,” respectively.
Patriarch Brendan Gleeson has long been an admired character actor. He only just received his first Oscar nomination this year — Best Supporting Actor for “The Banshees of Inisherin” — but his awards resume goes back further than that. For instance, he received industry plaudits for playing Winston Churchill in the telefilm “Into the Storm” (2009), for which he won an Emmy and earned a BAFTA nomination. In all he has received two Emmy nominations, three BAFTA bids, and two Screen Actors Guild noms in addition to his aforementioned Oscar citation.

The penultimate episode of The Mandalorian season 3, “The Spies,” features the return of Moff Gideon and the introduction of the Shadow Council that governs what’s left of the Empire five years after Return of the Jedi. While the mention of Grand Admiral Thrawn and more hints of Palpatine’s cloning plan may have been some of the larger takeaways from this scene, there’s an important connection to the First Order and the Sequel Trilogy that shows just how dangerous this council is to the future of the New Republic.
We learn one of the members of the Shadow Council is Commandant Brendol Hux. Yes, that’s right, he’s the father of future First Order General Armitage Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) from the Sequel Trilogy. His son will one day become an important part of the First Order’s plan to...

The Mandalorian may have unleashed its most Star Wars-y story ever with “The Spies,” an episode that features Mandos vs. Imperial stormtroopers with jetpacks, several references to Legends canon, and yet another tease for Grand Admiral Thrawn. When season 1 of "The Mandalorian" was first revealed to take place in the interim years between the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy, it felt like a choice that was all but predestined. After all, it wouldn't have made much sense for the shiny new streaming series to outpace the timeline of the saga films, nor would it have been advisable to rob themselves of the narrative (and crossover) potential of roping it several established characters from various corners of the "Star Wars" galaxy. Now, however, season 3 appears set on proving just how smart it was to dive deep into a largely unexplored period of time in the franchise's canon.
Season 3, episode 7, entitled "Chapter 23: The Spies" (you can check out /Film's review by Bryan Young here), provides the show's most emphatic statement yet that there's plenty of gaps...

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 7: Chapter 23
The Mandalorian has really outdone itself with season 3’s penultimate episode, “The Spies.” It’s hands-down one of the best, most thrilling episodes in the Star Wars series thus far, with kickass action, poignant character moments, and a high-stakes energy that permeates from beginning to end.
The episode opens with Elia Kane checking in with Moff Gideon in a Coruscant alleyway via an Imperial Probe Droid (a pleasant pop of nostalgia), in a short scene that will probably go forgotten by many but deserves a shoutout for its gritty Blade Runner vibes. Then, we get the Shadow Council scene, which is worth the price of admission alone.
For goodness sake, this scene is jam-packed with so much drool-inducing setup for the future of the Mandoverse it’s ridiculous. Captain Pellaeon (a big Legends blast from the past!

One character in particular ties into the legacy of the sequel trilogy and lays the groundwork for the Stormtrooper program that will produce Finn — known then as Fn-2187. That character is Commandant Hux, who appears in Moff Gideon's Shadow Council of the Imperial Remnant, played by Brian Gleeson.
You may recognize Brian Gleeson as the brother of General Hux actor Domnhall Gleeson, and this is no accident; his character is actually Hux's father, Brendol. Even the name Brendol is a nod to the real-life father of Domnhall and Brian Gleeson: "The Banshees of Inisherin" star Brendan Gleeson.

Spoilers follow for "The Mandalorian" Chapter 23 - "The Spies."
The neon-lit underworld of Coruscant is where the new episode of "The Mandalorian" begins. A shadowy figure in a trenchcoat walks through the alleys until we see who it is. Elia Kane (Katy M. O'Brien), the "former" Imperial who sold out Dr. Pershing in the third episode of the season, and then convinced the New Republic to withhold help for Nevarro, turns a corner to see an Imperial probe droid. It puts her in contact with none other than Moff Gideon, who is angry at her for allowing Nevarro to be rescued by the Mandalorians, since Gorian Shard's attack was one of his machinations as well. He tells her to get back to work and goes to the Imperial Shadow Council, warlords and Imperials who are working to bring about the glory of the Empire in the era of the New Republic.

Since he was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA (which he later won) for his scene-stealing supporting performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, there’s been much talk about Barry Keoghan’s inspiring rise to fame.
As will likely be etched into Irish folklore as his Hollywood trajectory continues its sharp ascent, the Dubliner — born in one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods — would spend seven years in foster homes as a child. It was only around 2008, aged 16, when Keoghan’s love of movies was piqued by an ad in a shop window looking for actors for a new crime drama that was being shot locally. Three years later, he landed a role in Irish TV series Love/Hate (which would become a breeding ground for young Irish talent), followed by 2014’s indie hit ‘72, before breaking out internationally in 2017 with both Dunkirk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

With just a few days until the 2023 Oscars, hot contender The Banshees of Inisherin has been given a boost on home soil.
Martin McDonagh’s period tragicomedy — which has nine Academy Award nominations (an all-time Irish record) — has now landed the most film nods this year for the Irish Academy Awards.
Announced by the Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA), Banshees has 11 nominations, including best film and, as with the BAFTAs and Oscars, the film has been nominated in all of the performance categories for its main cast of Colin Farrell (who also got a nod for supporting actor for The Batman), Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon. Banshees‘ 11 nominations is the same number in 2022 amassed by Irish-language drama The Quiet Girl, which is now also in contention for an Oscar in the international category.
Further down the list, Frank Berry’s immigration drama Aisha — starring Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor — landed 10 nominations.

This interview with “Bad Sisters” editors Catherine Creed and Derek Holland first appeared in the Below-the-Line issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Based rather faithfully on the Flemish TV series “Clan,” AppleTV+’s “Bad Sisters” transplanted the darkly comic tale of a group of five sisters, one horrific husband and a possible murder to a dreamy depiction of greater Dublin. But the real narrative hook of the series, and the reason it became a talking-point show last summer, is its labyrinthine structure: Just as you’re embroiled in a storyline, the focus can shift on a dime (through a nifty film-reel effect) and transport you to another time, often not that far back in the chronology, deepening the focus and development of its many characters and creating more intrigue.

The Oscars broke with tradition in 2022 by being somewhat light in winners from across the Atlantic, but normality looks likely to resume in 2023 — largely thanks to Martin McDonagh’s beloved Irish tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin. There are also a few other major U.K. heavyweights in the running, with Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins lurking further down pollsters’ lists.
But any notion that British and Irish success rests on the shoulders of such established names is easily quashed thanks to the rising talent that has emerged on the big and small screen over the last 12 months. From phenomenal directorial debuts — including one that has a good chance of making the Academy Awards — to several stand-out onscreen performances to one of the world’s biggest pop stars finally getting to fully test his acting skills, there are a number of fast-rising names whose...
