Liam Neeson has enjoyed an unusual career arc. The distinguished actor wasn’t considered an action hero until he unleashed his now-famous “particular set of skills” on the bad dudes what snatched his daughter in 2008’s Taken. At the time, he was 60 – an age when actors not named Bronson, Willis or Eastwood begin slowing down, rather than ramping up the adrenaline levels in their script selections. Unfortunately, this outing, Blacklight, fails to land in his admirably lengthy plus column.

In the string of Taken flicks and others, his motivation was personal and familial. Some comedian remarked that after three Taken adventures, his Bryan Mills character may not be a hero – just a really negligent dad. This time Neeson strays into clandestine political machinations in a vehicle that’s as poorly timed as it was written.

If “Blacklight” were any more generic, it would have a barcode instead of opening credits, and jettison its title in favor of a stenciled label: Liam Neeson Thriller. But if you approach it with sufficiently lowered expectations, and have fond memories of the ’70s paranoid dramas that obviously inspired director and co-writer Mark Williams, this might be your house-brand jam. That might not be enough for you to rush inside a multiplex to catch this time-killer during what likely will be a fleeting “Only In Theaters” run. “Blacklight” probably will play best when it reaches its natural habitat on streaming platform menus.

Since “Taken” in 2008, Liam Neeson has starred in so many movies where he plays a character who protects, rescues, mourns, or avenges his family that it seems somewhat pointless to invest deeply enough in the latest to care whether it’s better than its predecessors, much less if it’s individually good or bad.

Directed, produced, and cowritten by Mark Williams (Neeson’s 2020 film “Honest Thief”), “Blacklight” is an unsurprisingly tepid action thriller which extends this odd phase of Neeson’s career, but the best thing that can probably be said about it is that it’s not materially worse than most of the others.

Williams coaches Neeson through another of the actor’s increasingly familiar gruff-but-sensitive performances while telling the story of the kind of black-bag man whose simultaneous political obsolescence and extrajudicial necessity movies like this too frequently want to explore without possessing the narrative or intellectual sophistication...

Thriller film, “Kidnapped” is close to wrapping up one of the latest movies into production in Australia, following the disruption caused by the coronavirus and stay-at-home restrictions.

Production is now under way in and around Port Douglas in the far North of Australia’s Queensland state, with a shoot that runs Aug. 17 to Sept. 9. The operation is following Covid-safe protocols established at national level and also those devised by the Queensland government.

Written by Shanrah Wakefield and directed by Vic Sarin, the film’s story is told through the eyes of woman living with her family in a tropical paradise. It is idyllic until their four-year-old daughter goes missing. Solving the mystery of her disappearance reveals previously hidden information about the family.

The cast is headed by Claire van der Boom and Todd Lasance.

The film is structured as an unofficial Australia-Canada co-production, involving Brisbane-based Steve Jaggi Company and Canada’s Sepia Films.

Claire van der Boom and Todd Lasance are playing a US-based couple whose young daughter is abducted while they are on holiday at an Australian resort in Kidnapped, an unofficial Australian-Canadian co-production.

Warner Bros/New Line’s It Chapter Two and Roadshow’s Chinese-American dramedy The Farewell gave the flagging Australian box office a much needed jolt last weekend while two new Oz releases struggled.

Kim Farrant’s psychological thriller Angel of Mine and Alan Lindsay’s romantic comedy The Naked Wanderer faced the same challenge which has bedeviled most Australian films this year: Opening on limited screens with minimal P&a, which means low visibility in the marketplace. So relying primarily on reviews, publicity and word of mouth is no guarantee to draw audiences.

Starring Noomi Rapace, Yvonne Strahovski, Annika Whiteley, Finn Little, Luke Evans, Richard Roxburgh and Rob Collins, Farrant’s follow-up to Strangerland grossed $26,000 on 42 screens and $43,000 including festival screenings for R&r Films.

Quentin Tarantino’s ninth movie Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood posted the biggest debut of his career in Australia last weekend, emulating its Us success.

The 1969-set drama/thriller starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Damon Herriman opened 68 per cent bigger than his previous best effort Django Unchained in 2012.

The downside: The Sony Pictures release sucked a lot of air from the second weekends of Universal’s Palm Beach and Transmission Films’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.

The top 20 titles raked in $14.4 million, 3 per cent up on the previous frame, according to Numero. Mind Blowing Films’ Bollywood film Mission Mangal and Magnum Films’ Hong Kong thriller Line Walker 2 had buoyant launches while Universal’s A Dog’s Journey opened with neither bark nor bite, mirroring its Us fate.

After playing kids in Red Dog: True Blue, A Wrinkle in Time, Jasper Jones and Pan, Levi Miller is set to take on his most mature role in writer-director Tyson Johnston’s debut feature Streamline.

Miller will play a 15-year-old swimming prodigy who self-destructs after his long absent father is released from jail.

Bronte Pictures’ Blake Northfield and Nathan Walker will produce the drama which is intended to go into production in Queensland in late 2019.

The movie is a deeply personal project for the La-based filmmaker, who grew up as a competitive swimmer and is drawing on memories from those times.

Roth plays a home care nurse who works with terminally ill patients at their home, isolating himself from the burdens of his past. The cast includes Elizabeth Tulloch, Michael Cristofer, David Dastmalchian, Tate Ellington, Sarah Sutherland and Claire van der Boom. This looks like it's a very tough film to watch with some complex emotional aspects, but it has played at numerous film festivals and won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes, so there's definitely something to it. As usual, Tim Roth looks outstanding in his role. See below. Strangely, it seems like this month and the next is when various distributors decided it was finally time to release their Cannes 2015 competition dramas. Aside from The Sea of Trees, Mia Madre, and My King, Michel Franco‘s drama Chronic, which picked up Best Screenplay at Cannes, will also get a release shortly.

Led by Tim Roth, he stars as a dedicated home care nurse, haunted by the burden of his past, who isolates himself within the intensely personal relationships he forms with his terminally ill patients. Chicago – The new NBC series “Game of Silence” premiered on a special Tuesday night rollout (April 12th, 2016), and one of the co-stars in the ensemble, Larenz Tate, was recently in Chicago at Studio Xfinity to promote the show. Tate is a Chicago born actor – his brothers Larron and Lahmard are also actors – and he also had a featured role in the cult TV series “Rescue Me.” The regular time slot for “Game of Silence” will be Thursdays at 10pmET/9pmCT.

“Game of Silence” is based on a Turkish TV series, “Suskuniar,” and involves a rising attorney whose perfectly crafted life is threatened by long-lost childhood friends who want to expose a secret from their collective past. Paris and Los Angles-based Breakaway Media has kicked off Efm talks on Alison Eastwood’s gothic romance Battlecreek.

Anthea Anka wrote the screenplay about an ailing man whose protected life is shattered by the arrival of a young woman.

Bill Skarsgård, Paula Malcomson, Claire van der Boom, and Delroy Lindo star in the film, hot off its world premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

“Alison Eastwood’s storytelling is poetic, and like her father [Clint], she is a visionary who will be making films for a very long time to come,” said head of sales Mark Austin.

NBC’s supernatural drama Constantine has been wrangling with the ratings since its inception. And given the fact that the network opted against giving the show a full 22-episode order, fans of the titular demon-hunter have been kept on tenterhooks right up until the season finale, which is due to air this Friday.

However, a new report suggests that there could be light at the end of the tunnel for the cult series, as it’s understood that Syfy may stage an 11th-hour swoop to acquire Constantine for a second season under the new branding, Hellblazer. While this remains unconfirmed by both parties at the time of writing, a network switch would make perfect sense for the troubled series, which has been lingering in limbo ever since that aforementioned decision by NBC.
