The thrill of the chase meets an offbeat character study in Diego San Jose’s latest series “Celeste,” a six-part episodic set to bow at San Sebastian’s Velodrome on Sept. 22.
Produced by Movistar Plus+ and The Mediapro Studio’s 100 Balas, with The Mediapro Studio Distribution handling international sales, the slyly enthralling first season follows Sara, an uninspiring tax investigator inching through life. On the cusp of early retirement, she’s lured into staying on the job for one last case – running down Latin pop star Celeste, who’s rumored to be taking advantage of her status to evade paying dues.
Setting out to make a thriller he likens to “Zodiac” or “Seven” but with a twist, San José manages an act of rebellion certain to shake monotonous algorithms and pull a curious, rapt audience. While not a masochist, he admits to craving change – and as he crafted this wily,...

Madrid — As far as film genres go, comedies often have the greatest difficulties in traveling abroad and translating in a meaningful way to foreign audiences. But, by the very nature of its narrative, Daniel Castro’s “Old Man in Love,” and upcoming project and part of the Ecam Incubator for Spanish films in development, will to buck that trend.
An intercontinental “love story,” “Old Man in Love” follows a too-trusting professor in his 70s across the globe as he looks to track down the four-decades-younger girl of his dreams.
Carlos, who teaches at the University of Navarre – one of Spain’s most prestigious and conservative Catholic universities – has all but given up on finding love as his online endeavors to court someone less than half his age have so far proved fruitless.
Just as his hope runs out, the genial geriatric is contacted by a young swimsuit model in Argentina named Claudia,...

Congress is mid-hearing about all sorts of piracy at the moment, but one interesting trend has emerged: The notion that Congress could force Google to de-list pirate sites from search results? And does this constitute censorship?
The House Judiciary's subcommittee on IP, competition, and the Net hearings have seen a long list of witnesses speaking about how their industry is suffering at the hands of pirates (of all calibers, from professional crooks to home users) and counterfeiters. On the table are apparently a number of moves to protect U.S. industry, including forcing Google to adjust its search engine algorithms, and even censoring particular pirate trafficking websites from U.S. users at the ISP level.
Witnesses like Fred Huntsberry (COO of Paramount Pictures) have been pointing out how "enormous profits can be made in trafficking stolen movies" and how there's an entire "shadow economy" of illicit sites that are merely...

In a second wave of layoffs this year, Clear Channel Radio eliminated 590 positions Tuesday, or just under 3% of its December 2008 staffing level. The cutbacks follow a Jan. 20 purge of 9% of the company's workforce in January. Combined the two rounds amount to approximately 2,500 employees or 11.7% of its staff, according to a Clear Channel spokesperson, and complete a months-long process based on an analysis of the company by Bain Consulting.
While the January cutbacks largely affected the top broadcaster's sales force, the new cuts are focused on operations, including engineering, It and local accounting and customer service operations. A number of on-air and Pd positions were also affected, a result of local Pd decisions to replace under-performing dayparts with syndication, voicetracking or offerings from the company's new Premium Choice program.
