‘Wintertide’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: How Did Beth Return The Strays To Their Normal State?
John Barnard’s 2023 film Wintertide isn’t just about the mindless zombies that go around town chasing and killing people; rather, it takes a detour from all the gory elements to focus on the toll an epidemic takes on the mental health of those enveloped in it. The film isn’t just about survival but about the transformations and changes that take place inside everyone’s mind.
Wintertide is set in Canada, wherein most of the population has turned into zombies, called Strays, because of depression caused by the lack of sunlight. Also, these Strays caused electrical disturbances whenever they were in the area. To counter the spread of the epidemic, the government passed around some pills and syrups to fight off the symptoms. Wintertide revolves around one specific person caught in the crosshairs of this zombie apocalypse: Beth.

"Do you think it's possible for the things we do in our dreams to change our lives while we're awake?" I'd say no, but that's just my guess? Gravitas has revealed an official US trailer for an indie horror thriller from Canada titled Wintertide, directed by John Barnard. This premiered at various festivals throughout 2023, including at the Brussels, Cinequest, Sci-Fi London, Palm Beach, and Dances With Films Festivals. Set in an isolated northern city battling a plague of depression that mutates it's victims into zombie-like automatons, a woman discovers the key to immunity lies within her dreams. Beth is a volunteer watchperson in this city fighting a plague of depression that transforms the few remaining residents. Will her own dreams be enough to sustain her? Niamh Carolan stars as Beth, along with Solange Sookram, Jeremy Walmsley, Jesse Nobess, Colleen Furlan, Darcy Fehr, John B. Lowe, and Onalee Ames. I dig the dark,...

"Storm clouds may be brewing, but sunny days lie ahead..." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie crime drama called The Parts You Lose, the latest film from filmmaker Christopher Cantwell (Our Footloose Remake). This small town thriller is about a deaf boy from a North Dakota town who befriends a potentially dangerous fugitive. The boy takes him in and helps him recover from an injury, but the cops are starting to close in. Danny Murphy plays Wesley, co-starring with Aaron Paul, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Scoot McNairy, Darcy Fehr, and Stefanie Wiens. This hasn't shown up at any festivals and looks like your average criminal-on-the-run drama, with a few small tweaks to the usual story. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Christopher Cantwell's The Parts You Lose, from Sgf's YouTube: Wesley (Danny Murphy), a young deaf boy, discovers an injured fugitive (Aaron Paul) and secretly helps him recover.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
It’s some time after midnight, and you’re riding the bus. The rehearsed movements from here to bed are already running through your head: ten or eleven more blocks, fifty steps to the building door, up two flights of stairs,...

My Winnipeg
Directed by Guy Madden
Written by George Toles and Guy Madden
2007, Canada
Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Winnipeg. Where sleepwalkers roam the snow laden streets. Where gender seperation exists in public swimming holes. Where the Winnipeg Jets arena is a shrine to everything that matters. It will be difficult to forget the Winnipeg Guy Madden has envisioned in this documentary for his hometown.
Originally concieved as a simple documentary about his hometown of Winnipeg, My Winnipeg subverts the traditional form of documentaries. Inspired by his producer to create something that would go outside the limits typically imposed on city stories, Maddin uses this opportunity to create a new genre he called “docu-fantasia”. The story is about “Guy Maddin” (played here by Darcy Fehr) and his attempt to film his way out of Winnipeg. Traveling by train he believes the only way to get out of the frozen wasteland would be to...

My Winnipeg
Written by Guy Maddin, George Toles
Directed by Guy Maddin
Canada, 2007
Since its release in 2007, a good deal of the conversation surrounding Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg has been how exactly to define the film. Is it, as Maddin himself has dubbed the picture, a “docu-fantasia,” or is that not even accurate? During an interview between Maddin and critic Robert Enright, as part of the newly released Criterion Blu-ray, the two evoke a number of references in hopes of situating the film: Werner Herzog, melodrama, Chris Marker, city symphonies of the silent era, Fellini’s I Vitelloni. Yes, it is like these, but also not quite. An essay by Wayne Koestenbaum, also included with the disc, likewise alludes to everything from Hitchcock and James Joyce to Andy Warhol’s Blow Job and Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah. So what does it say about a film that can draw such parallels,...

You certainly can and probably should go home again, at least according to the faux approximation of himself in the 2007 pseudo-documentary/experimental homage My Winnipeg from Canadian auteur Guy Maddin. However, donning nostalgic garb calls for drastic reinvention. A director who has built a painstaking filmography of films imitating silent and lost titles from annals of vintage cinematic eras, his name can both provoke and evoke the emotional state phonetically represented by his surname. But whether one embraces his style or not, there’s no one quite like him.
This year is off to a great start for Maddin, beginning first with his second title to grace the Criterion collection (his 2006 title Brand Upon the Brain! also holds this distinction) as well as the premiere at the Sundance Film Festival of his latest work, the operatic The Forbidden Room (which pays homage to the two-headed Roman god, Janus, looking forwards and backwards simultaneously,...

His gang waits inside his house, having shot their way past police. There is friction in the ranks. Ulysses, however, is focused on one thing: journey-ing through the house, room by room, and reaching his wife Hyacinth (Isabella Rossellini) in her bedroom upstairs. The equilibrium of the house has been disturbed and his odyssey eventually becomes an emotional tour,...

The Wndx Festival of Film and Video Art is still a relatively young fest, but always does a tremendous job promoting Canadian experimental and avant garde film. The above highlight real shows off some of the excitement of last year’s sixth annual event, including several moments with both the fake and the real Guy Maddin.
Maddin was at Wndx to recreate his silent film gallery installation, Hauntings, which can be partially seen shimmering ghostily through hanging sheets. Meanwhile, the filmmaker discusses the lost silent films that Hauntings pays homage to. (Plus, Maddin impersonator Darcy Fehr tries to snag some of the credit.)
There’s also other great Canadian celebrating going on, including Darryl Nepinak talking about hating Picasso while filmmakers Mike Maryniuk, Aaron Zeghers and Heidi Phillips discuss their working processes.
And, of course, Wndx is all about the films, so the highlight reel includes clips from award winners...

A lot of hay has been made lately about the future of Netflix streaming movies over the Internet for its subscribers as opposed to their original business model of being a mail-order DVD rental service. A good recent article on the subject was written by Chuck Tryon, who waded through all the hype and arguments against to try to figure out what impact Internet streaming of movies has on the movie industry.
Well, forget about the industry for the moment. How is Netflix streaming affecting the underground filmmaker?
Personally, I’m not a Netflix subscriber, so wading through their offerings is a bit more difficult for me. However, I was still curious if the company was streaming any underground movies. To find out if they were, I ended up searching a website called Instant Watcher, which is a company independent of Netflix, but uses a Netflix developer Api to scan...
