The Santa Barbara International Film Festival landed a major win for its 40th anniversary with the U.S. premiere of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 on February 7. It was a big moment for Kevin Costner, who first introduced his ambitious four-part Western in Venice last September.

After the screening, festival director Roger Durling led a conversation with Costner, costume designer Lisa Lovaas, and composer John Debney.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival celebrated a huge get for its 40th anniversary: the U.S. premiere of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” on Friday, February 7. The screening is five months to the day after it premiered in Venice last September, marking the second installment of Costner’s planned four-part Western epic. Following the screening, festival Director Roger Durling held a Q&a with Costner, costume designer Lisa Lovaas, and composer John Debney.

Costner immediately started talking about what initially drew him to wanting to bring this story to the silver screen, before putting an emphasis on finally giving women their deserved spotlight in the genre. “We were told if we could get across that Atlantic Ocean, there was a place. It was like the Garden of Eden, and if you were mean enough and tough enough, you could make it yours,” Costner said.

Kevin Costner said on Saturday at Deadline Contenders Los Angeles that he’s not giving up on his sprawling four-part Western film series, Horizon: An American Saga, whose Chapter 2 was pulled from a planned August theatrical release after Chapter 1 fell short at the box office in July.

“I’m hoping, I’m dreaming, I’m meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they’re all hiding in the shadows,” the Horizon director, star and co-writer said to laughter from the audience near the end of a panel discussion with a trio of collaborators on the movies: cinematographer J. Deadline’s 2024 Contenders Film: Los Angeles, an annual daylong awards-season kickoff event, hosted stars and talent of films competing for the top honors during the upcoming awards season.

Costner will be presented with the honor following a Nov. 1 afternoon screening of Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1, the first installment of an epic Western film series that he directed and stars in, and a Q&a about the film, moderated by yours truly, in which he will field questions alongside the film’s cinematographer J. Welcome back to the wide-open vistas and scattered settlements of Kevin Costner’s Horizon. This installment picks up where the last left off, continuing the story of Western expansion through interconnected tales. Costner wears multiple hats as director, writer, and star, juggling an epic scope across hours of landscape shots and pioneers’ travels.

Chapter 2 centers on wagon trains navigating plains and hardscrabble towns like Horizon, which sprouts from the dust on promises of opportunity. We rejoin favorites like resilient widow Frances and taciturn gunslinger Hayes, dealing with dangers native to the untamed frontier—from the elements and each other. Harsh realities especially face pioneer women, as some find independence while others fall victim to man’s brutality.

Costner plainly loves the Western genre, but ambition sometimes outpaces execution. Nonlinear editing between plots disorients, and character arcs feel rushed. Still, patient viewers can immerse in rich production design and performances that add nuance to stock archetypes.

The world premiere for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter Two” is back on the horizon. It’s just a little further out there than it initially had been.

The second “Horizon” film will make its world premiere out of competition at the tail-end of the 81st Venice International Film Festival of La Biennale di Venezia. It will screen on the final day of the festival, Saturday, September 7, 2024.

It didn’t take long for costume designer Lisa Lovaas to dive into her exhaustive prep for Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” the director’s ambitious Western chronicling the Civil War-era expansion and settlement of the American West. In fact, she started taking notes immediately after reading the first page of Costner’s massive script (co-written by Jon Baird), which was not her usual routine. But it was so densely packed with descriptions of the characters (140 speaking parts), as well as the locations, that Lovaas needed to jot it all down to get a head start on her research, which turned into a book-length account of everything (including actual photographs from 1861 to 1865).

“Peoor Things” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 21. It prevailed over three of its Oscar rivals, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer” plus “Maestro.”

The fifth Oscar nominee, “Barbie,” won the fantasy/sci-fi race. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Saltburn”

In its 25-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last six Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Cruella” in 2022, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.

Last year, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over eventual Oscar champ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Barbie, Poor Things and Saltburn were among the winners at the 2024 Costume Designers Guild Awards.

Barbie‘s Jacqueline Durran won excellence in sci-fi/fantasy film while Poor Things‘ Holly Waddington took the excellence in period film award, and Saltburn‘s Sophie Canale received the excellence in contemporary film trophy.

Both Barbie and Poor Things are nominated for the Oscar for best costume design, alongside fellow Cdga nominees Killers of the Flower Moon (Jacqueline West), Napoleon (Janty Yates and Dave Crossman) and Oppenheimer (Ellen Mirojnick).

In the TV categories, Beef, The Great and Ahsoka won excellence in contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy television, respectively.

Wendi McLendon-Covey hosted the Cdga Awards, where Annette Bening, Billie Eilish and Francine Jamison-Tanchuck were among the honorees.

Bening received the Spotlight Award, given to an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including an awareness of the role and importance of costume design.

“Barbie” and “Poor Things” led the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards.

In the excellence in period film category, Oscar nominee Holly Waddington won for her work on “Poor Things.” Jacqueline Durran, who is also an Oscar nominee, was recognized for her work on “Barbie,” winning the excellence in sci-fi/fantasy film award.

In contemporary costume, “Saltburn’s” costume designer Sophie Canale won there.

Shawna Trpcic who passed away last year, posthumously won for her work on the Disney+ show “Ahsoka.”

Wendi McLendon-Covey served as the night’s host. Annette Bening received the Spotlight Award. Bening has worked alongside costume designers such as Albert Wolsky and Julie Weiss, and was recognized for her special awareness of the role and importance of costume design. However, due to Covid, Bening was unable to accept the speech in person.

Francine Jamison-Tanchuck was presented with the career achievement award. She thanked mentors including Ann Roth and Edith Head.

The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Maestro,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” among those landing nominations.

The costume designers behind “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” will vie for the top prize in excellence in period film, while the artisans behind “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn” will compete for excellence in contemporary costume.

Notably missing from the lineup were the costume designers behind “The Color Purple,” “Wonka” and “Ferrari.”

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been an Oscars frontrunner for costume with Jacqueline Durran’s designs translating from the big screen into mainstream when the film became a cultural phenomenon last summer. Thousands emulated Beach Barbie and Ken looks as they showed up at movie theaters in various shades of pink. For the film, Durran created hundreds of looks for the various Barbies and Kens.

While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.

The Costume Designers Guild (IATSE Local 892) has revealed the nominees for its 26th CDG Awards, which will be handed out Feb. 21 at Neuehouse Hollywood.

Nominations for features and TV include categories for contemporary, period and sci fi/fantasy costumes. Feature nominees across those categories include Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Little Mermaid, May December, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Saltburn.

Among the television nominees are period dramas The Golden Age, The Crown, Daisy Jones & the Six and The Great and contemporary dramas including The Morning Show, The Bear, What We Do in the Shadows, The Mandalorian and Loki.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Renfield!With critics and fans divided about Renfield, Universal has its first 2023 horror bomb. The production company started strong out of the gate with M3GAN in January and Cocaine Bear in February, but despite early trailers looking promising, Renfield failed to capture the same horror comedy success in April. Starring Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, Count Dracula's minion desperate to get free of his demanding boss, and Nicolas Cage as the dreaded Prince of Darkness himself, it seemed like it could promise a few laughs, a few frights, and at the very least be a fun romp with charismatic actors chewing the scenery.

Unfortunately, Renfield ran into a few problems, most of them to do with pacing, a subplot involving an honest cop (Awkwafina) trying to expose the corruption in her department, and an underdeveloped deuteragonist in the form of a violent New Orleans crime family.

Chris McKay's new horror comedy "Renfield," starring Nicholas Hoult as the title character and Nicolas Cage as a very familiar vampire Count, may serve as a direct sequel to Tod Browning's 1931 classic "Dracula." Set in the present day, it catches up with Count Dracula and his enslaved, immortal henchman Renfield as they have fallen into a pattern. As it goes: Dracula kills too many people, vampire hunters nearly kill him, he and Renfield flee the country to convalesce, Renfield finds new victims to restore his master, Dracula rises again, and the cycle repeats. 

Renfield, having been locked in the same pattern for a century, has grown weary. While he is immortal and eating bugs gives him a short burst of superpowers, he hates that his boss is so narcissistic and controlling. Count Dracula’s bold extravagance has never been an oversight for costume designers, but “Renfield’s” Lisa Lovaas wanted to add a bit of “rockstar flair” to Nicolas Cage’s take on the Prince of Darkness.

While Lovaas still aimed for a “current but timeless” wardrobe for the iconic vampire, she pulled inspiration from David Bowie as well as classic versions of Dracula.

As the film concludes and Renfield seeks his revenge on Dracula, Lovaas wanted to pay homage to former versions of the vampire in an unexpected way. Audiences’ last glimpse at the horror icon is him at his most extravagant, in an ultra-luxe deep burgundy velvet suit.

Lovaas revealed that in this final costume, there was “some David Bowie influence.” She told Variety, “I loved the monochrome style of that iconic red suit of his from the late ’80s. Such a bold and powerful look which I thought worked well for Nic.

Bloody Disgusting spent a day on set, getting acquainted with Nicholas Hoult’s new take on Renfield, the bug-eating righthand to Dracula, and learning more about the expansive supernatural world within director Chris McKay’s horror-comedy.

In part one of our set visit, we observed an early scene where Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield arrived late to a battle between Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and a group of vampire hunters. Later in the day, the lucky handful of journalists invited to set witnessed Cage in feral Dracula mode, ruthlessly dispatching his enemies with sharp teeth and claws.
