Adam Sandler performed a song that paid tribute to Saturday Night Live’s 50 years on the air during Sunday night’s anniversary special, but not before he was introduced by retired Hollywood veteran Jack Nicholson.

Nicholson introduced the Grown Ups actor before he began his referential track, where he highlighted infamous SNL moments, pondered when Lorne Michaels will retire and quipped about “finding out your favorite musician is antisemitic.”

Sandler kicked off his performance saying, “everyone in this room has something in common,” pointing out that “all of our lives were changed by the show” before poking fun at some lighthearted moments. He questioned who would “take over the show when Lorne retires” in his lyrics before he appeared to joke that Speedy Rosenthal, a longtime member of SNL’s music department, would be the one to take over Michaels’ spot.

Tom Hanks has come under fire for his portrayal of a Trump supporter during Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special.

During the episode, Hanks reprised his role as Doug, a Maga hat-wearing contestant on Black Jeopardy! alongside Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and Eddie Murphy.

Originally introduced in 2016, the character satirized both the contrasts and similarities between Trump supporters and Black culture. However, this latest performance did not sit well with some conservative viewers.

Maga supporters took to social media to criticize the skit, arguing that it reinforced outdated stereotypes. “Trump won the popular vote. This tired trope that Maga is racist is disgusting. SNL is an unfunny show for snobbish liberal elites,” wrote former Rfk Jr. aide Link Lauren on X. NBC’s 50th anniversary special for “Saturday Night Live” hit a very strong 14.8 million viewers on average across NBC and Peacock on Sunday night.

That number is 202% above the average number of viewers who have tuned into each regular episode of “SNL” throughout its 50th season, which is 4.9 million — itself a 13% improvement on last season’s same-day viewership. And among the key adults 18-49 demographic, the special scored a 2.5 rating.

According to NBC, this is the network’s most-watched primetime entertainment telecast (meaning non-sports and non-news) in five years, since the 2020 Golden Globes Awards, as well as the fourth-most-watched entertainment telecast of all time on Peacock, only coming behind three Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade telecasts.

“SNL50” closed out its celebratory weekend with an impressive audience.

The three-hour “SNL” anniversary celebration brought in 14.8 million viewers across NBC and Peacock and scored a 2.53 rating in the 18-49 demo, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day viewing figures and internal streaming data. Viewership is expected to keep growing as fans catch up over the coming days.

Among both total viewers and demo viewers, “SNL50” ranks as NBC’s most-watched primetime entertainment telecast five years, since NBC broadcasted the 2020 Golden Globes. The telecast also became Peacock’s most-watched entertainment simulcast, though was still outpaced by three telecasts of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

For comparison, viewership for “SNL50” nearly rivaled that of the 2025 Grammys, which brought in 15.4 million viewers in February, and outpaced viewership for the 2025 Golden Globes, which scored 10.1 million viewers in January.

Near the end of the 50th anniversary Saturday Night Live special on Sunday night, original cast member Garrett Morris sat on a chair at the show’s primary stage (a.k.a. home base) to introduce “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” a 1978 SNL short that imagined an elderly John Belushi as the last survivor of that first group of Not Ready for Primetime Players. Before the film rolled, Morris quipped that when he joined the cast in 1975, “I had no idea I would be required to do so many reunion shows.

Steve Martin kicked off the SNL 50th anniversary special Sunday night with a monologue in which he made jokes about topics ranging from his age to President Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

Adam Sandler’s performance at Sunday night’s “SNL50: Anniversary Special” was one of the most memorable moments of the night — even before it began. The performance was introduced by Jack Nicholson, who received loud applause inside Studio 8H.

“Everyone in this room has something in common. All of our lives were changed by the show,” Sandler, who spent five years on “Saturday Night Live” from 1991 to 1995, began. His song highlighted many behind-the-scenes jokes, including calling out “Drunk Wally” for holding the cue cards upside down and thanking “Nurse Teresa” for the many doses of Pepto Bismol.

“50 years of writers seeing Spielberg at Lorne’s monitors, not laughing at one of their sketches that he obviously hated,” Sandler sang. “50 years of those same writers getting wasted at the after party and loudly telling everybody that ‘Jaws ‘was overrated.”

“SNL” revived its beloved “Black Jeopardy” sketch for its 50th anniversary, except this time with Eddie Murphy playing Tracy Morgan.

In the sketch, Kenan Thompson returned as the host of “Black Jeopardy,” introducing the sketch by saying “Welcome to ‘Black Jeopardy,’ the only ‘Jeopardy’ where every single viewer fully understood Kendrick’s halftime performance,” referencing Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show at last week’s Super Bowl.

Leslie Jones also returned as Shanice alongside Morgan, who played a man named Darius, and Murphy, who played “Tracy Morgan.”

“Darius, Tracy, y’all seem like you might be related,” Thompson said, though Murphy’s Morgan immediately rejected the idea, saying “Well, James Earl Jones is my biological father. James Earl Jones impregnated my mother on the set of ‘Claudine.’ You know what? We might be related.”

Eddie Murphy, who once rescued Saturday Night Live during a rough patch in the 1980s, rescued a sketch in the show’s 50th anniversary special with a note-perfect imitation of Tracy Morgan.

The Black Jeopardy sketch, a reprise from many years ago, featured Kenan Thompson once again playing host Darnell Hayes. Morgan played a fictitious contestant, as did fellow ex-cast member Leslie Jones.

After a flat opening stretch that made it seem like the sketch could go either way, Murphy was introduced as Morgan. Wearing a jumbo-sized gold medallion and a red satin patterned jacket, Murphy-as-Morgan got huge laughs and even nearly broke Thompson. “Big dog gonna make some big money!” he crowed.

Molly Shannon returned as her iconic character Sally O’Malley during Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary special on Sunday night. And yes, she’s still “50 years old,” even after all these years.

The long-awaited cameo moment happened around the 30-minute mark of the three-hour extravaganza. Five-time host Emma Stone (who made waves on the red carpet with her popcorn ballgown) got interrupted by Sally as she was about to cut to a tribute of the show’s best physical comedy moments.

“Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Sally O’Malley,” she told the crowd of A-listers while wearing her trademark red jumpsuit. “I’m proud to say, I’m 50 years old, just like Saturday Night Live. She’s not one of those gals who’s afraid to tell her real age, and she likes to kick, stretch, and kick. She’s 50. Fifty years old!”

Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon kicked off Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special with a touching duet.

The Grammy winners introduced each other before they opened the NBC broadcast by performing Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound.” Simon pointed out that he performed the same track on SNL in 1976 with George Harrison, while Carpenter joked that neither she nor her parents were born at the time.

After they concluded their performance, Carpenter and Simon kicked off the special by reciting SNL‘s signature catchphrase, “Live From New York, it’s Saturday night,” despite the special airing on Sunday. From there, Steve Martin appeared to deliver the monologue.

Carpenter took the stage later Sunday night for a bridesmaid skit inspired by SNL‘s viral Domingo skit with Ariana Grande, which featured music from her track “Espresso.” There, Marcello Hernández reprised his role of Domingo once more, while Pedro Pascal and Bad Bunny...

“Black Jeopardy,” one of Kenan Thompson’s most popular recurring “Saturday Night Live” sketches, came back to 30 Rock during the show’s 50th anniversary special on Sunday. As usual, Thompson played host Darnell Hayes aka Alex Treblack, with contestants being played by former cast members Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and, most notably, Eddie Murphy.

The biggest laughs were earned by Murphy, who did an impression of Morgan, while Morgan played a man named Darius and Jones played a woman named Shanice.

“Welcome to ‘Black Jeopardy,’ the only ‘Jeopardy’ where every single viewer fully understood Kendrick’s halftime performance,” Thompson said, opening the sketch with a reference to Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl appearance.

As Thompson introduced him, Murphy called out, “Big dog gonna make some big money!” in an exaggerated put-on of Morgan’s voice.

NBC celebrated Saturday Night Live on Friday night with over three hours of music history on SNL50: The Homecoming Concert. The special hosted by Emmy winner Jimmy Fallon streamed live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City and is now available to stream on Peacock.

Musical acts included Arcade Fire, Backstreet Boys, Bad Bunny, Bonnie Raitt, Brandi Carlile, Brittany Howard, Cher, Chris Martin, Dave Grohl, David Byrne, Devo, Eddie Vedder, Jack White, Jelly Roll, Lady Gaga, Lauryn Hill, Miley Cyrus, Mumford & Sons, Post Malone, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Robyn, Snoop Dogg, St. Vincent, the B-52s, the Roots, and Wyclef Jean. Surprise comedy musical performances included Bill Murray, Paul Shaffer, Andy Samberg, Chris Parnell, Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, and Tracy Morgan.

Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer reprised their iconic roles as Marty and Bobbi Mohan-Culp during the “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert” Friday.

The old married music teachers even sung Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss track, “Not Like Us.” Gasteyer’s Bobbi chimed out the backing vocals in an opertatic tune, as Ferrell’s Marty rapped the verse. Both comedians went back and forth singing “A minor” trying to find the key, as SNL alum Leslie Jones filmed from the crowd.

Julia Sweeney’s “Pat” was a frequent and popular sketch star during the 1990s era of Saturday Night Live, but in recent years the character of indeterminate gender has come under criticism as a mockery of trans and nonbinary people.

Appearing today on ABC’s The View, Sweeney addressed the criticism, saying she “took it to heart” and has “thought about it a lot.”

“Much later, there was some criticism of it,” she said, “but Pat isn’t trans or non binary. Pat is a man or a woman, but you just don’t know which Pat is. That is the joke, but I did understand the criticism, and I took it to heart and thought about it a lot.”

“But even when we were writing all the sketches ,” she continued, “we were really making fun of the other people [in the sketches] not being able to handle the fact that they couldn’t tell.

Saturday Night Live eras will converge in an upcoming movie. Two of the show's most iconic and beloved cast members are set to star opposite each other.

Bill Murray and Kristen Wiig will star in the comedy Epiphany directed by Max Barbakow and written by Mitch Glazer. Per Variety, the plot follows "Favorite Ives (Wiig), an heiress and fashionista who has blown through her entire fortune and is forced to take up a challenge: marry a rich husband in two weeks or lose everything and end up on the street. This is meant as high praise: Susan Morrison may have ruined “Saturday Night Live” for a legion of journalists assigned to cover the world of late-night TV.

Morrison spent years chatting up Lorne Michaels, the NBC impresario who has seen “SNL” transform itself from an upstart, avant-garde program into an American institution on par with Apple, Disney and McDonald’s. Michaels is famously tight-lipped about the program, and why not? He doesn’t need to say a word about the long-running weekend comedy-and-music showcase to get audiences to tune in or to spur the media to write about it. “SNL” speaks for itself in 20-odd episodes every TV season. Any utterance from Michaels’ lips would only serve to reveal his comedic secrets and erode the fascination people have with the program.

And yet, he spoke to Morrison. About everything that most people never get to discuss with him.

The former SNL star, Pete Davidson, had The Tonight Show audience laughing out loud as he recalled a memorable and surprising encounter with the Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio, during his time on Saturday Night Live.

It was the 40th-anniversary Special episode and all the biggest Hollywood stars were present at the show. However, it was his encounter with Leo who had put him on the edge.

The comedian was on The Tonight Show to promote his latest projects but it was his hilarious behind-the-scenes short moment with DiCaprio that had Jimmy Fallon and the audience laughing nonstop, offering a short glimpse into the high-pressure world of live television.
