Director Adam Wingard has received rave reviews for his R-rated, home invasion horror-comedy You’re Next, which screened at several film festivals over the past couple of years and will be released August 23. But his often gore-drenched creative sensibility — and twisted sense of humor — is not everyone’s cup of Darjeeling. In the spring of 2007, for instance, the then just the 24-year-old Wingard appeared on the premiere episode of Fox TV’s On The Lot, a much-hyped but now little-remembered, Steven Spielberg-produced filmmakers’ competition with the first prize of a million-dollar development deal at Dreamworks. As Wingard recalls, he...

We break down this year's remaining 'Idol' hopefuls, from Aaron Marcellus to Skylar Laine, and everyone in between.
By James Montgomery
Members of the "American Idol" Top 24

On Thursday, after approximately 4,256 hours of auditions, callbacks, comparisons, falsettos and fainting spells (not to mention the occasional bit of nudity and some stuff on a battleship), "American Idol" finally whittled the masses of dreamers down to the Top 24.
It was a ride, to say the very least, but at long last, we know the names and faces of the folks who will battle it out to become the heir to Scotty McCreery's crown. Of course, keeping track of all the hopefuls can get rather difficult (especially since so many of them are country singers), which is why we've once again taken it upon ourselves to break down each of them in handy-dandy bios. Because how else are...

How can anyone complain about an American Idol episode that packed in performances from more than 50 singers, a heaping portion of maniacal/delightful bitchery courtesy of “The Vocal Coach from Hell,” and a genuine emotional breakdown from soundbite-spewing cool kid Heejun Han? Actually, if you’ll give me a second, I’m sure I can come up with something — Season 10 Vegas survivor Hollie Cavanagh once again getting the seen-but-never-heard treatment? one of the strongest vocalists in the competition getting burned by a last-minute judges’ switcheroo? the continued existence of Randy Jackson on my TV screen? — but sometimes, you have to...

Brad Pitt has come forward to clarify comments he made about ex-wife Jennifer Aniston in an upcoming interview with Parade magazine. Brad Pitt says he did not mean to imply in the interview that Jennifer Aniston was boring, although his life while they were married apparently was.
Speaking to Parade magazine, Brad Pitt said that it “became very clear to me that I was so intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself.” Pitt said he “started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holdinga joint, hiding out. It started feeling pathetic.”
In the interview, Pitt — now married to Angelina Jolie – said he thought his marriage to Jennifer Aniston and “trying to pretend the marriage was somethign that it wasn’t” contributed to his discontent.
Brad Pitt later dumped Jennifer Aniston after meeting (and snogging) Angelina Jolie...

This year's Los Angeles Film Festival, running through June 26, opens tonight with the latest from Richard Linklater, and Steven Zeitchik talks with him for the Los Angeles Times: "'It was my most difficult one to get made,' he said flatly. 'It took 12 years to happen, and even then it was tough. People can say shooting in 22 days makes a movie better. It doesn't.' … Bernie is a shaggy, idiosyncratic work, possibly the strangest yet in a career full of strangeness. Set in the small town of Carthage, Texas, it tells of an effeminate, musical-loving mortician named Bernie Tiede [Jack Black] who befriends and then commits a horrible crime against a repressed wealthy matriarch [Shirley MacLaine], leaving him to face the wrath of a local prosecutor [Matthew McConaughey]. The movie is a dramatization of an actual case — the script was based on a 1998 Texas Monthly article about Tiede, and Linklater, who attended Tiede's trial,...

J.J. Abrams' upcoming film Super 8 looks like it's going to be incredible. It's my most anticipated film of the summer. From what I've seen in the trailers and clips, I had no doubt it was going to be a great movie, now there are a bunch of little first impression reviews that have hit the net and twitter confirming the films awesomeness.
Here's a little round up of the first impression reviews, read through them and let us know what your excitement level for this film is:
Slashfilm: Loved it, they don’t make these types of movies anymore. The best thing I can say about the film is that I loved the characters/setting/tone so much that I probably would have enjoyed it just as much as a Stand By Me-like coming of age drama without the sci-fi/train crash/action. Its one of those...

Here are just a few quotes from around the web. They are all very positive for the most part.. Slashfilm: Loved it, they don’t make these types of movies anymore. The best thing I can say about the film is that I loved the characters/setting/tone so much that I probably would have enjoyed it just as much as a Stand By Me-like coming of age drama without the sci-fi/train crash/action. Its one of those films that feels like it was made just for me. (someone asked if its more E.T. or Cloverfield, I responded: It’s Cloverfield with the characters and setting of E.T.( FirstShowing: absolutely loved it, lived up to my high expectations. Felt like watching an Amblin classic. Of course, it’s expected I’d love it, considering how excited I was for it, but yes, it’s that good.

The first public screening of Jj Abrams' Super 8 took place this Saturday in Hollywood. A few movie journalists were in attendance, and today PAramount Pictures gave word that we were allowed to "tweet about your thoughts on the film" before the review embargo breaks on June 1st. I'm sure more than a few of you already follow me on Twitter and already heard what I thought (if you don't, you can find my tweets on @slashfilm [1]). I've decided to do a round up of all the early tweet reactions to the film. Hit the jump to find out what people thought of Super 8. The 49th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is an epic celebration of experimental media that runs for six days on March 22-27. There’s so much great stuff screening this year, it makes one wonder what they’ll have left for their 50th anniversary next year!
A couple of the highlights include the highly anticipated feature-length documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye by Marie Losier, which chronicles the pandrogynous love story between industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife. The film already made a big splash at the Berlinale earlier in the year and looks to be a major hit on the festival circuit this year.
Also not to be missed is a special retrospective of one of this year’s festival jury members, Vanessa Renwick, a longtime favorite on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film. Renwick will screen 10 of her quirky and artistic documentary portraits,...

Over the years, Canada has given us some of the most interesting filmmakers in horror. Bob Clark, David Cronenberg and John Fawcett are just some of the directors to emerge from the Great White North with singular voices and cool films. And with a forceful little flick called Dead Hooker in a Trunk, Vancouver-based filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska have pretty much grabbed the indie horror film community by the collar and demanded admission to this boys club. Word to the wise: If I were you, I wouldn't argue with them. I've seen what they can do.
I first saw Dead Hooker in a Trunk several months ago at a horror film fest. I'd never heard of the movie or its makers, but when I saw that title,...

Ever feel like you were watching a film made of recycled parts? As if the film would say “Made from 100% recycled celluloid” at the bottom if studios didn’t think being blatantly told they were watching a repackaged mix of past, better films would anger audiences. For those who are angered, obviously the solution is just to avoid something like Killers, but for the rest of the world, those who stumble across the cover on a shelf or in a Netflix queue and don’t immediately discard it based on the faces of Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl as the draw, Killers gets to deliver a devastating combo of mediocrity and vanilla-flavored action with a swirl of romance designed to somehow please the testosterone-laden men and the estrogen-fueled women who simultaneously think to themselves “Wow, it’s an action/romance flick I can watch with my girlfriend/boyfriend.” It is,...

Who better than Kate, Cameron and Jen to make Sandy discover that being a single gal can actually be a Good thing?
In life, it’s true that we get by with a little help from our friends (there’s even a song about it!), so what better way for Sandra Bullock to survive husband Jesse James’ shocking infidelity than to hit Tinseltown with a pack of A-list BFFs?
Exactly.
As Sandra, 45, prepares to potentially enter the Hollywood Single Gals club, we at HollywoodLife.com had hand-picked three prospective besties who have been there, done that, gotten the ‘I survived my break-up with Brad Pitt’ T-shirt to prove it.
1) Kate Hudson

Thank you, Brad for chopping off your beard dreadlocks!
Brad Pitt showed off some major improvement on his ghastly beard on Jan. 30 at the Directors Guild Awards in La. Just eight days earlier at the Haitian Relief telethon Brad was sporting not one, but three long, scraggly beard dreadlocks. His trimmed down goatee is leaps and bounds better than his old scruff. However, we can’t wait until the day we can say Brad is beard free and back to his sexy ways! We wouldn’t be surprised if all of the Angelina Jolie breakup rumors were started over a fight over his heinous facial hair! - Marta Topran
