German author, screenwriter and director, a former stage actor. He became an assistant film director in 1934, but subsequently concentrated chiefly on writing screenplays. He is particularly noted for his work on the satirical
Rosen für den Staatsanwalt (1959) and (in collaboration with Helmut Käutner) the powerful wartime drama
Des Teufels General (1955).
