After years of whistling while she worked making a new movie, Snow White is finally nearing her return to the big screen. Disney unveiled the first trailer for Snow White at D23 Friday, ahead of its March 21, 2025 release date.
The film was set to open in March of this year, but Disney pushed it back a year in light of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Underscoring its long journey to the screen, stars Rachel Zegler (Snow White) and the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot) were at D23 two years ago showing off the first footage from the movie.
Marc Web, known for directing the Amazing Spider-Man movies, is directing the feature, which has songs from The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen‘s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
The film comes almost 90 years after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which premiered in 1937 and became a cornerstone of the Disney empire. Multiple takes...

Disney on Friday at D23 showed off the first clip from its live-action take of the 1937 animated classic Snow White, which hits theaters on March 21, 2025.
Said Gal Gadot about her onscreen antagonist, “She’s evil, she’s magical, she’s delicious.”
Rachel Zegler introduced the clip, which she told the crowd at the Honda Center was a classic. Indeed, it was her and the dwarves as she sang “Whistle While You Work.” Snow White is in the dwarves’ house, dancing and cleaning with a crystal falsetto.
They then showed off the trailer, with images of Gadot putting on the crown, doing the mirror mirorr, Zegler picking apples, and the transformation of Gadot into an evil witch. It’s a prefect, lively replication of the original movie.

Madness and misfortune darken the doorstep of the 2024 Chattanooga Film Festival with Adrien Beau’s The Vourdalak, celebrating its North American premiere after an acclaimed run on the European festival circuit. Like an accidental renaissance rendition of Pet Sematary or a Napoleonic re-telling of Salem’s Lot, this French nightmare is a lush and looney folk tale of grave misfortunes. And monsters! Here be monsters…
Shot on film and featuring some incredible moments of handmade horror, The Vourdalak is, yes, a Period Piece- but not a Period Piece that haters of Period Pieces should immediately disregard. I get it, fancy talk and frilly garments aren’t for everyone…but how about live-sized puppets of skeletal ghouls with long boney fingers that stalk in the shadows at night and feast on the blood of the living? How ’bout them Elizabethan apples!? The Vourdalak is like Jim Henson meets The Brothers Grimm, filtered...

Fairy tales, in their undiluted forms, need no help when it comes to being creepy and horrifying. However, the Disneyfication of these classic stories makes it rather easy to forget their morbid beginnings. In the case of Cinderella, most modern adaptations of this quintessential rags-to-riches tale rarely bring up the violent aspects. All of that has been long removed in favor of safer elements, such as fairy godmothers and anthropomorphic mice. Yet, when reimagining the flaxen servant-turned-princess as someone who seeks “bloody vengeance,” Tom Jolliffe looked to the past; the Cinderella’s Revenge screenwriter found inspiration in the character’s gruesome roots.
The Brothers Grimm did not come up with Cinderella (or Aschenputtel) all on their own, but their familiar variation provides part of the source material for Cinderella’s Revenge. Charles Perrault is also credited, seeing as his French version (Cendrillon) was the first to feature the fairy godmother,...

Netflix’s The Grimm Variations brings back the folk tales by the Brothers Grimm. This episode takes inspiration from Town Musicians of Bremen and gives it a dark twist. Inclining towards the anime aspect of this modern rendition, this episode takes place in a cyberpunk kind of Wild West featuring anachronistically futuristic cowboys. The story hints at different themes, such as striking unlikely friendships, isolation, and oppression.

Netflix’s The Grimm Variations gives an anime twist to stories by The Brothers Grimm. Most of us have grown up hearing or watching these stories through different renditions; however, this Netflix adaptation gives it another layer of intrigue with its own plot inspired by the original Grimm stories. This episode of The Grimm Variations is inspired by ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker.’ The original story was supposed to be about gratefulness, but this rendition takes a dark turn instead with Mr. N’s struggle with perfectionism and selfishness.

You know how the petrichor soothes the mind and soul after a dry and hot summer day? Well, this is how the new Netflix anthology series The Grimm Variations introduces itself in the first episode, titled Cinderella. Based on the classic folktales of the Brothers Grimm, this series takes the innocence out of the folktales and replaces it with dark, depressing outcomes. Disney won’t be very happy now, I assume. The brothers Wilhelm and Jacob narrate the tales to their little sister Charlotte as she eagerly waits for the twists and turns that are about to come.

Fack Ju Göhte spinoff Chantal in Fairyland (Chantal im Märchenland) capitalized on its strong start in Germany last Thursday, turning in a weekend performance for the record books. With $6.2M through Sunday, the time travel adventure from Constantin Film scored the best Easter opening frame ever for a German movie in the home market, as well as the best overall launch for a local title since Chantal filmmaker Bora Dağtekin’s 2019 comedy The Perfect Secret.
In total, the Thursday-Sunday session sold nearly 580K tickets with a 37% share of the market. Including previews and the strong Easter Monday holiday, admissions are at 815K through yesterday for nearly €8.3M ($8.9M) which puts Chantal in line with Barbie at the same point in release. Factoring in numbers from Austria and Switzerland, the movie has clocked a little over 930K admissions.

A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.
Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

After desperately clinging to his dream project, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, when the film got postponed by decades, Terry Gilliam shifted his focus to The Brothers Grimm. Making a winning combination from the start, Gilliam used his specialization in the bleak and strange to turn Heath Ledger and Matt Damon’s 2005 movie into the most beloved, dark fairy tales of all time.
Matt Damon in The Brothers Grimm
Although The Brothers Grimm featured a stellar cast including Jonathan Pryce, Monica Bellucci, Lena Headey, and more, it was reported that Terry Gilliam initially wanted Johnny Depp instead of Matt Damon. Considering Gilliam’s preference towards Depp, even Damon was baffled when he was hired for the $105M movie, in place of the Pirates star.

By the time Rumpelstiltskin was in the works, the slasher model of yesteryear was replaced with something fresh but still familiar enough. Hence the many oddball slashers where the antagonist is neither human nor ordinary. From djinns to scarecrows, the decade saw horror turning to more fantastical inspirations. Mark Jones, whose career began in writing for cartoons and television, essentially kicked off the trend with Leprechaun. And had his first movie not been so successful, his next would have likely never happened.
After striking gold with Leprechaun in the early 1990s, Mark Jones looked to another magical icon for his second horror movie. Two specific on-screen depictions of Rumpelstiltskin influenced Jones’ own unique reimagining; he drew from Shaike Ophir and Billy Barty’s performances, respectively from the vintage anthology show Shirley Temple’s Storybook and an ‘87 movie directed by David Irving. Jones remembered Ophir’s take on the Brothers Grimm character to be particularly creepy.

Hansel and Gretel, the two German kids who nearly became somebody’s meal, need little introduction. The characters in this Brothers Grimm classic have been used as a lesson about stranger danger and resilience for years. And while Hansel and Gretel’s ordeal has been put on screen multiple times — both faithfully and loosely — Yim Pil-sung’s 2007 movie is one of the more distinct adaptations. This Korean reimagining retains the essence of the influential fairy tale while also adding its own unique twists.
Hansel and Gretel was one of several movies from the golden age of South Korean Horror — often referred to as “K-Horror” in the West — to be based on fairy or folk tales. While Arang and A Tale of Two Sisters dug into local Korean lore, other movies drew from European narrations. However, much like Cinderella and The Red Shoes, Hansel and Gretel’s interpretation of its basis is rather liberal.

Disney has unveiled a first look photo for its live-action Snow White movie, which this afternoon pushed back its release date from March 22, 2024 to March 21, 2025, amidst the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
Rachel Zegler plays the title character in the new take on Disney’s 1937 animated classic, a work foundational to the studio’s empire that was itself based on a 19th century fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm. The story, of course, follows a princess who is rescued by seven dwarf miners who make Snow White part of their household after she’s exiled into a dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother.
Check out the new still from Disney’s Snow White, featuring Zegler’s princess opposite dwarves Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy, below.
Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) directed from a script by Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, with Marc Platt producing.

Two WGA writers have most certainly not put their pencils down during the now-129-day strike against Hollywood studios. It is not against the guild’s rules to pen a… children’s book — especially one about the fight with the AMPTP.
Peter Cameron is the lead writer on “The Elves and the Shoemakers: a Grimm Little Tale of Givers and Takers.” He’s also a father who has struggled to find the right way to explain the strike to his 3-year-old son. So Cameron, whose dream “has always been” to write children’s books come retirement time (think more Roald Dahl than Dr. Seuss), dusted off his typewriter.
The picture book, a sequel to the Brothers Grimm’s “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” was co-written by a second WGA member with what Cameron called “priceless input” from a third. They prefer to remain anonymous; together, the group goes by “the elves.

This drama about an underdog-understudy forced to clean studios has real ballet dancers but the story is less realistic than Angelina Ballerina
This saccharine drama pivots around aspiring ballerina Sam (Juliet Doherty), who we meet as she is about to go on stage to dance in a production of The Red Shoes (presumably a version of the Matthew Bourne ballet-drama). But in one of those dramatic twists of fate that would set even the Brothers Grimm’s eyes rolling, her sister Annie calls to wish her good luck seconds before she takes the stage – and then promptly gets hit and killed by a passing car.
Obviously, this rather ruins Sam’s big night, and she gives up on dancing altogether. She subsequently falls in with a teenage tearaway named Eve (Lauren Esposito) who, like Sam, is a young American living in Australia for reasons left inexplicably vague. A sequence of...

Disney’s live-action remake of 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs doesn’t come out until next year, but a culture war surrounding the film — titled Snow White — is already at full boil.
First, conservative critics took issue with casting of Latina star Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) as a character described in the original Brothers Grimm story as having “skin as white as snow,” and the production changing the formerly titular seven dwarfs into a diverse collection of magical creatures of varying sizes and genders.
Then 22-year-old Zegler caused a stir when a flurry of comments from late last year recently resurfaced that suggested she didn’t like the original film and that the new movie would take a very different approach to the iconic character.
“She’s not going to be dreaming about true love,” Zegler told Variety in September. “She’s dreaming about becoming the leader...

Samantha Morton appeared on a new episode of “The Louis Theroux Podcast” and recalled her tumultuous history with Harvey Weinstein, who is currently imprisoned as a convicted rapist. The “Minority Report” actor said Weinstein blackballed her on his films such as 2005’s “The Brothers Grimm” after she turned down one of his movies years prior. That film was the 2000 romantic comedy “About Adam,” starring Kate Hudson, Stuart Townsend and Frances O’Connor.
According to Morton, Weinstein was impressed with her performance in 1997’s “Under the Skin” and courted her to star in “About Adam.”
“I said, ‘I don’t like it,’” Morton said about turning down the offer. “‘I think the film is really misogynistic and I don’t want to be part of it.’ The casting director came back with, ‘You don’t say no to Harvey.’ Well it’s not to him. I just don’t want to do this film…...

Stephen King is among history’s most frequently adapted writers, up there with Charles Dickens, the Brothers Grimm, and William Shakespeare for inspiring the most successful page-to-picture creations. From Rob Reiner and David Cronenberg to Mike Flanagan and Andy Muschietti, genre filmmakers have clamored to take on King’s words for decades.
There’s no shortage of material to go around, of course. Horror’s reigning titan of literary terror has written more than 60 books and 200 short stories: many of them rooted in King’s signature strangeness and the believable humanity that turned 2017’s “It” into a global sensation. King has teamed up with his son Joe Hill to produce even more cinematic fodder in recent years. The pair’s “In the Tall Grass” novella became a Netflix movie in 2019, and Hill enjoyed his own success with Scott Derrickson’s 2022 “The Black Phone” adaptation.

OpinionRecasting Ariel as a mermaid of African descent allows brown and black children to feel seen. It allows them to imagine themselves in magical stories, a realm where they’re rarely present.Half-fish and half-woman, the mermaid in fantasy, fairytale, and folklore presents an intriguing idea – that of a sensual yet naive being from another world who is near-human, but animal enough to be exotic. Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid, a fairytale first published in the 19th century, has lent itself to multiple interpretations and readings over the years. The mermaid in the original story feels trapped in her body because of her inability to live in the human world. She gives up her voice and embraces pain for the promise of love. Her forlorn figure on the rocks is a haunting image, and it has continued to stay relevant across centuries for this very reason. Disney’s...

After finding mainstream success with "The Fast and The Furious" in 2001 and its sequel, "2 Fast 2 Furious" in 2003, Paul Walker went through a strange time in his career. The Southern California native tried to capitalize on his image with 2005's "Into the Blue," which flopped about as bad as a movie can flop at the box office. And so Walker turned to director Wayne Kramer.
Having caused a considerable stir with his previous effort, "The Cooler," the director doubled down on the whole dark, disturbing thing with his next project. "Running Scared" was an intense, violent, and strangely haunting crime thriller that resurrected the rawness of similar crime outings from the 1970s. Showcasing a grim desaturated look that heightened its overall sense of doom and seediness, "Running Scared" was an outlier at a time when the adult demographic was seemingly being ignored by mainstream films.

Stephen Graham is showing off his newly bulging biceps. “He’s like Popeye,” says his wife, Hannah Walters, on her way to the fridge. “Just give him a can and he pops it and crushes it.” It’s breakfast time in the couple’s home in a former mining town in Leicestershire, and the This Is England star is being teased by the love of his life, as he chats to me from the kitchen counter.
He does have impressive (tattooed) muscles to show off, though, as a result of intensive training for the role of a hardened pugilist in the forthcoming A Thousand Blows, written by Steven “Peaky Blinders” Knight, which the couple are producing together. They chat and spar as we talk, with Graham paying tribute to Walters for getting Knight involved: “I thought, ‘No chance!’ It was all down to that wonderful woman who’s eating cereal there.

Disney has offered fans a first look at its live-action Snow White remake, starring Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman). The first images from the film directed by Marc Webb were unveiled as part of the studio’s D23 presentation, highlighting its upcoming slate of live-action and animated features, which also spotlighted the work of its subsidiary, Pixar.
Snow White is based on Walt Disney’s 1937 classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was itself based on the 19th century fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm. It was Disney’s inaugural animated feature and foundational to the Disney empire.
Zegler said it was “an honor” to bring the classic back to life “for modern age.” She said that, for her character, the film is about “Finding a sense of agency so she can be a just ruler and wonderful queen.”

Jenkins also revealed it follow the rise of Mufasa and feature young versions of characters Timon, Pumbaa and Rafiki. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will return as Timon and Pumbaa, respectively.

Netflix has released the first photos from Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, a 2022 film based on a short story by Stephen King. Adapted and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), Mr. Harrigan’s Phone stars Donald Sutherland as Harrigan and Jaeden Martell as a young man who befriends the elderly Hannigan.
While most, but definitely not all, of Stephen King’s work scares the hell out of readers, Hancock describes this particular story as more of a cautionary fairy tale.
“More than anything, it’s about an odd relationship between a billionaire in his 80s and a [young man] and the bonds of friendship, and how far will you go for a friend?” writer/director Hancock said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “Do you like Shawshank Redemption, do you like Stand By Me,...

Into The Woods Broadway Review: Stephen Sondheim's Seminal Fairy Tale Musical Is Still A Masterpiece
Fairy tales entertain, enthrall, frighten, or comfort as well as shape a moral compass from the cradle. From Perrault, Brothers Grimm, to the Disney diet, I grew up with a brain stocked with fairy tales, how goodness brings you the ballgown, the glass slipper, and the Prince. Witches are the villains, or a savior will pull you out of the wolf's belly.
I find a catalog of comfort in the fairy tale revision musical "Into the Woods" because of its frankness. The 1987-premiered original Broadway production (directed by Lapine)...

A new show opening June 21 at the Getty Center explores the centuries-long influence that the elaborate visual storytelling styles of the Middle Ages have had on the contemporary imagination in entertainment.
“There are these real hallmarks of popular culture — Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones — which make use of the visual language of the Middle Ages and do so in culturally relevant ways,” Larisa Grollemond, assistant curator of manuscripts of the J. Paul Getty Museum, tells THR. “I think the project of this exhibition was to pull back the curtain on what aspects of these beloved franchises are actually medieval and which are the product of historical imagination over time.”
“The Fantasy of the Middle Ages,” which runs through Sept. 11, tracks the evolution of the fantasy genre in modern entertainment and how medieval traditions and costume studies have birthed an entire artistic universe.

While Netflix’s 2018 holiday film, The Christmas Chronicles, didn’t have a clear antagonist—it was more about saving Christmas—the 2020 sequel pits Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) against an elfin protégé-turned-human-rival, Belsnickel (Julian Dennison). But while Belsnickel, with his odd garb and anti-Claus vendetta, might initially seem not to fit into The Christmas Chronicles 2, the character is actually rooted in Yuletide tradition.
According to German folklore that dates back to at least the 18th century, Belsnickel is a foil of sorts to Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus: a disheveled man dressed in tattered furs and dirty clothes, often wearing a mask with a long tongue and carrying a switch, he visits homes a few weeks before Christmas to check up on children’s behavior. Belsnickel’s name is a combination of belzen and Nickel, a nickname for the German Nikolaus.

It takes less than a minute into the newest trailer for the Goya Award-winning “Birdboy: The Forgotten Children” to set itself far apart from its more kid-leaning brethren. Last week, we took a look at Loving Vincent, a stunningly gorgeous animated feature taking its aesthetic cues from traditional fine arts; and this week, we're doing the same thing. Though the style in the French The Girl Without Hands is quite a long way from the rich oil portraits of Loving Vincent. Now, the inspiration is (or anyway, appears to be) Chinese ink wash painting, the art of sketching out characters and settings in a few swift, bold brush strokes with strongly-colored ink. Tagline: "The New Civil War Has Begun." Directors: Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Writers: Nick Damici and Graham Reznick Cast: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow and Angelic Zambrana. Bushwick is an action thriller, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Starring former pro-wrestler Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect, 2012), the film tries to answer the question: what if Texas seceded from the United States? Naturally, they would attack Bushwick! a suburb of Brooklyn. Writers Nick Damici (Stakeland II) and Graham Reznick have offered a modern retelling of the Grimm Brothers' Little Red Riding Hood, as Lucy (Snow) attempts to get to Granny's house. The path is littered with gunfire as the big bad wolf gets in the way. As well, much of the film is shot via long takes, with a steadicam. This shooting technique puts the viewer right in close with the characters. Meanwhile, there is a...

Weeks later, the scandal surrounding Harvey Weinstein's alleged history of sexual harassment only seems to intensify. Stars have continued to come forward with stories about the producer, who is now being investigated by police in Los Angeles, New York and London. But could he be charged for the claims of sexual assault and rape leveled against him? And how has he -- and Hollywood -- reacted to new allegations?
Here's the latest on the scandal, from police investigations to the social media movement that sparked a conversation about sexual harassment in Hollywood.
Can Weinstein be charged for the allegations?
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told Et on Thursday that they are currently investigating Weinstein after a woman came forward alleging that he sexually assaulted her in 2013. The woman remains anonymous, but detailed her allegations to The Los Angeles Times, claiming that the producer "bullied his way into my hotel room" and alleging that he "then...

Following hot on the tail of our article about Courtney Love blowing the whistle on Harvey Weinstein in 2005, here's another hot little tidbit. Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg, having written memorable movies for Miramax such as Beautiful Girls and Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead, decided to write an ode to Weinstein on his Facebook timeline.
Deadline has taken sharing the entire post, but it's pretty much easy to summarize. Besides all the hard hitting f-bombs, the ode speaks to how everybody knew, despite ignoring it, what kind of man Weinstein was. Some key descriptions are Weinstein's hunger or appetite, and it wasn't for food.
Not that he was raping. No, that we never heard. But we were aware of a certain pattern of overly-aggressive behavior that was rather dreadful. We knew about the man’s hunger; his fervor; his appetite. There was nothing secret about this voracious rapacity...

“Brawl in Cell Block 99” introduces the retooled and muscle-plated Vince Vaughn 2.0 headfirst, his shaved and tattooed skull stomping away from the camera like an asteroid hurtling toward earth. Action Vaughn 2.0 has the same movie star qualities as the hunk of “Swingers”: the barreling 6’5″ frame, the deep-set eyes that convinced Rihanna to call him the sexiest man alive.
But now that Vaughn is 47, his powerful torso has the leather-knotted look of a man who spent his life pounding railroad spikes—no vanity abs here—and the exhausted shadows on his face say he’s seen too much. And that’s not just because he and “Cell Block” writer-director S. Craig Zahler just wrapped their second film together, “Dragged Across Concrete,” just four days before flying to Austin for the movie’s American premiere at Fantastic Fest. (It opens theatrically on October 6.)

The first time I ever saw Dario Argento’s Suspiria, I was very young—somewhere between eight and ten (I’m gettin’ old, so my memories are fuzzy from time to time). Regardless of whatever exact number that age might have been, I just know I was definitely too damned young, because Suspiria shattered my budding cinematic sensibilities and screwed with my tender psyche in ways that would stick with me for my entire life. It’s a movie I’ve spent a long time loving, which means I’ve been patiently waiting for Synapse’s restoration of the landmark giallo film from one of Italy’s premier Maestros of Horror.
And after three arduous years (for Synapse, not for me, obviously), the 4K restoration version of Suspiria has finally arrived, and it is absolutely well worth the wait. Not only is watching every single frame like bearing witness to a work of art,...

With that in mind, here’s my pick of the Top 5 (because it’s Sharknado Five… geddit?!?) movies from The Asylum in – shock, horror – order of preference…
5) Avengers Grimm
An off-the-wall mix of Grimm Fairy tale characters and superhero team-up movies which, frankly, should have been obvious given the title, Avengers Grimm’s plot is relatively simple: when Rumpelstiltskin uses the Magic Mirror to escapes to the modern world taking Snow White with him and destroying the mirror in the process,...

3.8 Who Rules the Land of Denial?
This was very much an episode of two halves. The first half was entirely given over to the continued pursuit of Nikki (and her new accomplice in escape, Mr. Wrench, last seen in season one) by Varga’s trio of murderous henchmen. As a standalone piece of television, it was incredible stuff - visually arresting and funny and terrifying at turns. Filmed from a raw palette of dirty blacks and grimy grey, the chase appeared to be taking place in a haunted forest, replete with animal heads, crossbow hunters and decapitations, like something from the tales of the Brothers Grimm if they’d been animated by the German Expressionists instead of Walt Disney.

The Brothers Grimm loved nothing more than a horrifying, gruesome, decidedly older-skewing fairy tale. While their classic stories have often been sanitized for wider audiences, it appears as if Gkids’ upcoming feature film “The Girl Without Hands” is holding on to at least a few of the more terrifying details of the original story that has inspired the animated offering.
In the film, a starving miller makes a literal deal with Devil, only to find that he’s been tricked (such is the main problem with dealing with Satan, after all) and has accidentally sold off his cherished daughter. Initially protected by her disarmingly pure heart, the Devil eventually makes off with the girl’s actual hands, forcing her to embark on a hard-won journey to redemption that involves true love, a surprising new life, and more than one more run-in with the evil being that hurt her in the first place.

The trailer for The Girl Without Hands (La jeune fille sans mains) caught my eye because of its strikingly different animation style. In her review for Variety, Alissa Simon notes: "Each shimmering frame is composed of multiple layers of diverse drawing and painting techniques and washes of color combined with 2D computer." The film, based on a tale by the Brothers Grimm, represents the feature debut of French animator Sébastien Laudenbach. From the official synopsis: In hard times, a miller sells his daughter to the Devil. Protected by her purity, she escapes from the Devil who, in revenge, deprives her of her hands. So begins her long journey towards the light... but in spite of her resilience and the new protection of a handsome prince's...
