Severin Films is bringing out the big guns and starting 2023 with a bang, exclusively telling Bloody Disgusting this afternoon about the first two releases they’re bringing to the new year.

Happy Monday, dear readers! We have a brand new slate of home media releases to look forward to as we head into a new month, and there are some great films coming out on Tuesday that genre fans will definitely want to pick up. Rlje Films is finally releasing Horror Noire on both Blu-ray and DVD this week, and they’re also bringing home arguably the most talked-about horror film of 2020 as well: Rob Savage’s Host. Kino Lorber is showing some love to Dark Intruder with their new 2K Blu, and Code Red is giving us more reasons to fear the water with their Blu-ray for The Great Alligator.

We’ve got another exciting batch of home entertainment releases coming our way, and if you’re something of a Fulci-phile, it’s going to be an exceptionally good week for you, as Scorpion Releasing is giving both Murder-Rock and The Psychic the Special Edition treatment this Tuesday. Arrow Video has dug up the cult classic The Chill Factor for their Special Edition release, and Scream Factory is showing Strays some love this Tuesday as well.

Duncan Jones’ Moon is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a brand new 4K release that you can pick up this week, and for those of you DC fans out there, Shazam! hits multiple formats as well.

August 14th looks to be a killer day for genre fans looking to add to their home media collections, as there are a bunch of great releases coming our way this week. Scream Factory is putting in some serious overtime this Tuesday, as they have a trio of gorgeous Steelbooks—Army of Darkness, Lifeforce and The Howling—on tap, as well as the Collector’s Edition of Return of the Living Dead Part II and a standard Blu-ray of The Unborn to boot.

Arrow Video has also put together a Special Edition collection for What Have They Done to Your Daughters?, and they are re-releasing both The Gore Gore Girls and The Cat O’ Nine Tails as well. And, as if all that wasn’t enough, Full Moon has put together a nifty Blu set for Laserblast that fans are going to want to pick up.

The plot is as follows: Susan Stevenson (Ursula Andress) and her brother Manolo (Claudio Cassinelli), unable to get help from the New Guinea authorities, hire former explorer Edward Foster (Stacy Keach) to help them find her husband. He went missing months ago in the jungle whist on a quest to reach the sacred mountain of Ra Ra Me. Susan clearly loves her husband and would do anything to get him back. Foster agrees to take them, despite the obvious difficulties ahead, not only from the dangerous animals, but also from the legendary cannibal tribe said to be lurking within the darkness of the jungle canopy. Sergio Martino was a journeyman Italian director who averaged around three films a year into the early nineties and who worked in many different genres including documentaries (Naked and Violent), spaghetti westerns (A Man Called Blade), poliziotteschi (The Violent Professionals), sex comedies (Sex with a Smile), and action films (The Great Alligator; Slave of the Cannibal God; 2019: After the Fall of New York). But this blue-collar filmmaker is arguably most famous for his early seventies gialli such as The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, The Case of the Scorpion’s Tail, All the Colors of the Dark, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, and Torso. Without a doubt, Suspiria is Dario Argento’s best film (some of you may not feel the same, but I stand behind my choice), and one of the most atmospheric and artistic films ever made in the horror genre. It is the first in Argento’s “The Three Mothers” trilogy, which also includes Inferno and The Mother Of Tears. Argento was at the top of his proverbial game when directing both Suspiria and Inferno as they defy everything you've come to expect from horror films. Not only are they brimming with suspense and incredibly stylized violence, they are absolutely beautifully filmed.

• Crispin Glover fans have no doubt been wondering what happened to Simon Says, the indie slasher opus starring the eccentric actor as homicidal twins, which was made nearly three years ago and has only made a few festival appearances in North America since. Well, the wait is finally over.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release the William Dear-written/directed flick on DVD June 23. The cast also includes From Within’s Margo Harshman and Kelly Blatz, Greg Cipes, Carrie Finklea, Kelly Vitz, Artie Baxter, veteran actor Bruce Glover and Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively along with her siblings Lori and Robyn and their father Ernie, and the disc will contain a widescreen transfer with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, a filmmaker audio commentary and possibly other extras.
