With the Toronto International Film Festival starting, there’s plenty to look forward to on the feature front. There’s also much room for discovery among Short Cuts, TIFF’s dedicated program of short films. Spread across seven groups and one feature pairing, this year’s Short Cuts comprises 48 shorts from 23 countries, the most titles in the program since 2019. There’s also one major change this year in the form of Strange Cuts, a set of six genre shorts one might describe as a bite-sized take on TIFF’s Midnight Madness.
This year also has the strongest collection of shorts in some time, which is partly why I decided to highlight 11 titles this year as opposed to the usual 10 (a self-imposed maximum due to limited time more than a lack of wanting to write about more films). Below are my thoughts on these 11 highlights from this year’s program, and...

Captain Ryan Clark, played by Hugh Laurie, is ready to just “sit here and wait for death” as an ill-fated spaceship heads straight into the Sun.
So starts the trailer for Season 2 of HBO’s “Avenue 5,” where food is running low and passengers on a luxury space craft will have to wait eight years before returning to Earth. Josh Gad reprises his role of billionaire Herman Judd, who owns the spaceship captained by Ryan (Laurie) as customer relations executive Matt (Zach Woods) tries to thwart the growing panic onboard. The second season premieres October 10 on HBO.
Created by two-time Emmy winner and “Veep” alum Armando Iannucci, “Avenue 5” is set 40 years into the future where traveling the solar system is a booming tourism business. The eight-episode second season charts how an eight-week space cruise has turned into a nightmare never-ending vacation for those onboard.

Fleabag star Sian Clifford and Sherlock actor Jonathan Aris are joining BBC and HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials.
The duo are joining as Agent Salmakia and Commander Roke, respectively, both ‘Gallivespian Spies’. In the Philip Pullman story, Gallivespians are tiny humanoids who evolved in their native universe’s earth.
In the books, Gallivespian Spies are described by Pullman thus: “He was striking to look at: he was no taller than Lord Asriel’s hand span, and as slender as a dragonfly, but the rest of Lord Asriel’s captains treated him with profound respect, for he was armed with a poisonous sting in the spurs on his heels. He and his kind, the Gallivespians, had few of the qualities of good spies except, of course, their exceptional smallness: they were so proud and touchy that they would never have remained inconspicuous if they had been of Lord Asriel’s size.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a real and very British phenomenon; a perplexing mix of activities to challenge, empower and mildly endanger teenagers which concludes by setting them loose in the countryside with a map, a compass and a pat on the back. Get Duked! wisely focuses on the weirdness of the expedition portion and exploits its eccentricities to delightful effect.
The dreadful behaviour of a trio of toilet-detonating mates – Duncan, Dean and DJ Beatroot – finds them ‘volunteered’ for the DofE scheme as a final chance to straighten up. Baffled by both the welcome video and the very concept of orienteering the boys reluctantly hit the Highlands-bound minibus armed with all their survival essentials: sick beats, jelly sweets and box-fresh trainers.

Teamwork. Orienteering. Foraging. Three tasks that shouldn’t be too difficult to complete when bolstered by your best friends on a hiking trip en route to earning the Duke of Edinburgh Award. It’s going to be a challenge, but most who seek it do so with open eyes because of what the accolade means on their university applications. They want to be their best, will follow the map to the letter, and meet their chaperone at the midway campsite and coastal finish line with smiles on their faces. But as years passed, fewer teens actually still cared about a stuffy award forcing them to put their phones in their pockets and traverse the Scottish Highlands. It became a punishment teachers used to escape their troublemakers for a couple of days.
That’s exactly why Dean (Rian Gordon), Duncan (Lewis Gribben), and DJ (Viraj Juneja) find themselves in the middle of nowhere without reception.

What surely would have made a good reality-tv series — three juvenile delinquents from the big city, plus an awkward kid with no friends, are dropped in the Scottish Highlands and left to find their way back to civilization — works even better as a dark comedy goof when a couple of lunatics start shooting at them from afar. The stakes are high, but so are half the characters in Ninian Doff’s irreverent survivalist satire, which makes this deranged camping trip — with its phallocentric hip-hop jams, improvised pyrotechnics and hallucinogenic rabbit droppings — all the more unforgettable.

Music-video director Doff’s as wicked as Ben Wheatley and as wacky as Guy Ritchie in the style department, bringing urban attitude to this totally unexpected setting.

Amazon Prime Video has released an official trailer for an indie highlands comedy titled Get Duked!, which won the Midnighters Audience Award at last year's SXSW Film Festival. Formerly known as Boyz in the Wood, it has been given a new title for its US release this month. Set deep in the Scottish Highlands, the film follows wild teenage friends out on a character-building camping trip. With plans to do nothing but get high in the woods, the boys must face a shadowy force hell-bent on extinguishing their futures. From writer-director Ninian Doff comes an anarchic satire of generational politics, hip-hop loving farmers and hallucinogenic rabbit droppings that pits the youth of tomorrow against the status quo of yesterday. Starring Samuel Bottomley, Rian Gordon, Lewis Gribben, Viraj Juneja, Kate Dickie, Kevin Guthrie, Jonathan Aris, Georgia Glen, Alice Lowe, Brian Pettifer, with James Cosmo and Eddie Izzard.

Amazon Studios has launched the first red band trailer for the anarchic satire ‘Get Duked’.
Dean, Duncan and DJ Beatroot are teenage pals from Glasgow who embark on the character-building camping trip — based on a real-life program — known as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, where foraging, teamwork and orienteering are the order of the day.
Eager to cut loose and smoke weed in the Scottish Highlands, the trio finds themselves paired with straight-laced Ian, a fellow camper determined to play by the rules. After veering off-path into remote farmland that’s worlds away from their urban comfort zone, the boys find themselves hunted down by a shadowy force hell-bent on extinguishing their futures.
Written and directed by Ninian Doff — making his feature debut after a slew of award-winning music videos and short films – the film stars Samuel Bottomley, Rian Gordon, Lewis Gribben, Viraj Juneja, Kate Dickie, Kevin Guthrie, Jonathan Aris,...

"Science is changing... And I'm going to prove them wrong." Amazon Studios has released an official Us trailer for Radioactive, a historic biopic film about the life and times of iconic scientist Marie Curie. We already featured two UK trailers for this film earlier in the year, but with it arriving on Amazon Prime Video later this month there's a new Us trailer to watch. The film tells of the scientific and romantic passions of Marie and Pierre Curie, and the reverberation of their discoveries into the 20th century. Marie (born Maria Salomea Skłodowska) discovered the element Radium with Pierre in December of 1898, and went on to make many other great contributions to science throughout her life, including research on and invention of the term "radioactivity". Rosamund Pike stars, with Sam Riley, Anya Taylor-Joy, Aneurin Barnard, Simon Russell Beale, Jonathan Aris, Corey Johnson, Tim Woodward, and Harriet Turnbull. I still...

In his latest podcast/interview, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks with director Lorcan Finnegan about the Kafkaesque sci-fi Vivarium, which stars Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg and Jonathan Aris.
A young couple is thinking about buying their starter home. And to this end, they visit a real estate agency where they are received by a strange sales agent, who accompanies them to a new, mysterious, peculiar housing development to show them a single-family home. There they get trapped in a surreal, maze-like nightmare.
Vivarium is out on DVD & all good VOD platforms. Check out our review right here.

In Lorcan Finnegan’s Vivarium, which world premiered at last year’s Critics’ Week (parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival), a young couple is looking forward to take the next step in their relationship: get their own home. Guided by an unequivocally weird estate agent named Martin (Jonathan Aris), school teacher Gemma (Imogen Poots) and school gardener Tom (Jesse Eisenberg) take a trip to Yonder, a new suburban housing development. The artificial “perfect” suburban “dream” is not really up the couple’s alley, they find the place uncomfortably creepy – specifically, house #9, which even features already a room designed for a baby boy – therefore, they want to leave as soon as possible. When the estate agent disappears, Gemma and Tom decide it’s the perfect time...

Last year, Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots co-starred in one of the best films you likely never saw. That was The Art of Self-Defense, among the most underrated movies of 2019 and a truly terrific tale. Today, they team up again in a similarly unique title, though subject matter wise, it’s as different as can be. Both are terrific though, suggesting that a pairing of Eisenberg and Poots is a consistently strong recipe for success. The collaboration is in Vivarium, an exercise in weirdness that quickly becomes hypnotic. Hitting Video On Demand today, it’s another very strong option for new release viewing this weekend. The film is a hybrid of science fiction and horror, with a deceptively simple premise that turns into anything but. Young couple Gemma (Poots) and Tom (Eisenberg) have been looking for a house for some time. When they visit an odd real estate agent (Jonathan Aris...

The world has completely changed since Imogen Poots wrapped her latest starring vehicle, Vivarium, in the summer of 2018. Vivarium is a sci-fi horror film from director Lorcan Finnegan, who also wrote alongside Garret Shanley, who also penned the screenplay. We follow a young couple who are looking for a house, and find themselves buying a home in a development called “Yonder”. This new development is strange, empty and the guy showing them the house is a tad on the peculiar side too. When the guy showing them the house disappears, they attempt to leave Yonder, only to find themselves going around in circles, unable to find a way out.
The concept of the film immediately hooked me when I read about it a few months ago. The film doesn’t mess around either. You’re into the story and the flesh and bones of the idea within a few minutes,...

As any first-time homebuyer will know, finding an affordable, desirable property in today’s housing market can be an extreme ordeal. For young couple Gemma (Imogen Poots) and Tom (Jesse Eisenberg), searching for a suitable property turns into a literal nightmare when they become entrapped in a labyrinth-like neighbourhood of identical houses. Lorcan Finnegan’s sophomore feature is a surreal, unnerving minimalist sci-fi with satirical bite.
Vivarium starts with teacher Gemma and handyman Tom casually looking for their first home when they encounter bizarre estate agent Martin (Jonathan Aris). After a peculiarly enthusiastic sales pitch, the couple reluctantly agree to follow Martin to a new suburban housing development called Yonder. When Martin disappears during the tour the couple decide to hastily flee the site of this weird, completely unoccupied settlement of identical houses. Following multiple failed escape attempts, it starts to dawn on the couple that they have been trapped in this never-ending domestic prison.

With a nifty premise torn out of “The Twilight Zone” and a superb performance from Imogen Poots, “Vivarium” offers either the sort of horrifying distraction you might need right now, or a shattering window into the darkest parts of yourself you just don’t care to see.
Gemma (Imogen Poots) and Tom are a young couple looking to settle down in a new home, but not exactly looking to have children. After a fruitless search to find that perfect place, they meet up with an instantly creepy real-estate salesman, Martin (Jonathan Aris), an automaton straight out of “The Stepford Wives,” to Yonder, a housing tract where all the identical, pale-green starter homes and their white picket fences look copy and pasted on a seemingly endless horizon of astroturf.

We all like to believe that we have some semblance of control over our lives. Do we, though? How much of our identity is dictated by social conditioning? Maybe it’s explicit indoctrination like that taught by religion, politics, and culture as “superior” than others. Or maybe it’s implicit like the subliminal messaging possibilities of art appropriated by marketing. You might say to yourself that you’re too smart for advertising, but what do you do when confronted by four of the same product consisting of one brand you recognize via its logo, another you recall because of its jingle, a third that’s adorned with the name of the store you’re in, and a fourth from a company you’ve never heard of before? Do you even consider that last one?
Of course you don’t. It might be the best of the bunch by a wide...

Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg star in Vivarium, a mind-bending horror film from director Lorcan Finnegan.
Vivarium, a concept-driven indie horror film, is an intriguing showcase for stars Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg, taking shape as a sci-fi-themed drama about a couple stuck in a nightmarishly pleasant residence; one that doesn’t seem to exist in the real world and they therefore cannot leave.
Lorcan Finnegan directed the film, following up his 2016 feature debut, Without Name, which was preceded by award-winning shorts such as Foxes, Changes and Defaced. Finnegan worked off a screenplay by Garret Shanley, based off a story he helped develop.

"This house is forever." Vertigo Releasing has debuted the official UK trailer for sci-fi psychological thriller Vivarium, which premiered at the Cannes FIlm Festival last summer. One of my favorite sci-fi creations from the last year. This fantastic "Black Mirror"-esque thriller has been playing on the festival circuit, and is arriving in theaters + on VOD next month. In search of a starter home, a young couple follow a mysterious estate agent to a nice home. There they find themselves trapped in a mysterious labyrinth-like neighborhood of identical houses. Jesse Eisenberg & Imogen Poots star, and it's pretty much just these two most of the film, along with Jonathan Aris, and Senan Jennings as the boy. Go see this! I said in my review that it's "clever and captivating... twisted, minimal sci-fi" done right. I know they need to promote it, but these trailers give away too much. If you love...
