Hollywood anarchist and noted nudist Jack Nicholson saw his career flash before his eyes in the mid-1980s as the eraâs most popular movies totally confounded him. In a 1986 interview with The New York Times, Nicholson was asked if he felt âlike a creative person trapped in an uncreative age in the industry.â
''Well, you know,â Nicholson replied, âlast night I saw â whatâs that movie? Ferris something?â
Was Nicholson referring to Ferris Buellerâs Day Off? Anyone? Anyone?
âWell, that movie made me feel totally irrelevant to anything that any audience could want, and 119 years old,â he explained.
To make matters worse, it felt like the audience was on John Hughesâ side of the argument. âBelieve me, everyone else watching it liked it,â he said. âAnd you know, I literally walked out of there thinking my days are numbered. These people are trying to kill me.â
Imagine what...

Director Florian Frerichs breathes new life into Arthur Schnitzlerâs classic novella âTraumnovelleâ in Berlinâs pulsing nightlife in 2024, transforming a century-old narrative of sexual tension and psychological exploration into a contemporary meditation on desire, fantasy, and marital boundaries. This daring adaption follows Jacob (Nikolai Kinski), a distinguished psychiatrist, and his wife Amelia (Laurine Prince) as they traverse the complex landscape of modern intimacy, where technology, sexual liberation, and deep-seated psychological drives intersect.
Frerichsâ adaptation is more than just a retread of familiar territory; itâs a daring reimagining that aims to capture the raw psychological essence of Schnitzlerâs original work while firmly anchoring the story in the zeitgeist of 2024. The filmâs basic themes will be transposed into a world of vibrator apps, OnlyFans models, and Berlinâs varied nightlife, promising to investigate the perennial human concerns of faithfulness, fantasy, and the muddy lines between imagination and reality.

Director Elia Kazanâs âThe Visitorsâ was barely noticed when it was released in 1972, and it hasnât had many opportunities for reappraisal since. While several of Kazanâs other movies that were commercial failures during their initial runs â most notably âBaby Doll,â âA Face in the Crowdâ and âWild Riverâ â have since been canonized as classics, âThe Visitorsâ remains obscure. Thatâs a shame, because itâs a fascinating case of Kazan applying his talents to film that initially seems like a major departure, but on deeper examination reveals itself to be a personal and profound work.
A new Blu-ray from Kino Lorber provides the perfect opportunity to take a closer look after decades in which âThe Visitorsâ was almost impossible to find (and almost never in watchable transfers â the long out-of-print MGM DVD reduces the entire movie to a murky blob). This piece contains some spoilers for "Gladiator II."
In this month's "Gladiator II," Rome does not fall â but it comes damn close. It's also not for lack of trying, as both the manipulative ex-slave Macrinus (Denzel Washington) and our ostensible hero, Lucius (Paul Mescal), have no love for the Empire, with both men actively seeking to usurp, disrupt or combat its rule. Even though Lucius eventually changes his mind and finds himself believing in a "dream of Rome" begun by his grandfather Marcus Aurelius, and his father, Maximus (Russell Crowe in the first "Gladiator"), it may be too late, as the Empire has been nearly irrevocably tarnished by decades of decadence and misrule. The two men most responsible for this are the Emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), a couple of Enfant Terribles who director Ridley Scott told Vanity Fair he saw as "almost a replay of Romulus and Remus,...

Nicole Kidmanâs relationship with Tom Cruise was one of the most talked-about moments in the actressâs personal life. Considering they were two high-profile actors involved with each other and married for eleven years, it is not surprising that the world was interested in the ins and outs of their relationship.

A movie doesn't have to be successful to be a classic. Take "Heathers" â written by Daniel Waters, directed by Michael Lehmann, starring Winona Ryder.
Ryder, fresh off "Beetlejuice," played another death-obsessed teenager. Unlike gothic outsider Lydia Deetz, though, Veronica Sawyer from "Heathers" is in the in-crowd. She hangs out with Westerburg High School's trio of mean girls, all named Heather, but feels disillusioned. So her new bad boy lover J.D. (Christian Slater) convinces her to pull a lethal prank on queen bee Heather Chandler (Kim Walker).
"Heathers" is the template for other biting black comedy teen movies, from "Mean Girls" to "Jennifer's Body." It even inspired a "Heathers" musical! But it only made $1.1 million on a $3 million budget.

J. Michael Muroâs 1987 cult classic âStreet Trashâ is on the Mount Rushmore of âmelt movies,â a sickening horror subgenre marked by bodies literally dissolving into goo, with skin peeling off and skeletons deconstructing as outlandishly as possible. In the film, homeless people are poisoned and killed by a mysterious liquor named Tenafly Viper. âFried Barryâ writer and director Ryan Kruger has helmed a same-name sequel (out today on digital via Cineverse) that keeps the gonzo practical effects as a group of charming homeless misfits battle against a fascist government actively trying to exterminate them with a gaseous version of Viper. Kruger, who also co-wrote the movie and shot it in his native South Africa with producers Not the Funeral Home, spoke to Variety about balancing the message in the movie while still having fun, the difficulty of mopping up melted bodies and the possibility of a sequel.

Bob Fosse only directed five features â âSweet Charity,â âCabaret,â âLenny,â âAll That Jazz,â and âStar 80â â but among filmmakers and cinephiles, his legend looms large in proportion to the abundance of his output. David Fincher, for example, frequently references Fosse as an influence alongside and equal to far more prolific directors like Steven Spielberg, William Friedkin, and John Carpenter. Every week, moviegoers are polled by a company called CinemaScore to see how they like new movies in theatres. Their opinions are averaged out, and the film is assigned a letter grade. If the movie scores in the A-range, it will likely prove to be at least a decent-sized hit. Movies scored in the B-range usually do mediocre business, although there have been plenty of hits that have scored this way, too â it might just mean that the movie inspires strong feelings, with some people loving it and others not. Anything below a C-rating is a disaster, unless itâs a horror movie, because for whatever reason, even hit horror movies typically have underwhelming CinemaScore ratings. Only 22 films have ever gotten an F, but a D rating is considered the kiss of death for your film, with Joker: Folie a Deux recently scoring a dreaded D. Only one movie that...

During his long and incredibly prolific career, Stephen King has been involved with a number of things that one could understand he'd either regret and/or would rather forget. One of these regrettable things might be having Stanley Kubrick adapt "The Shining" to the big screen. Another might be the infamous orgy he wrote into one of his magnum opus novels, 1986's "It," a book which continues to be popular even though certain elements â like that moment â have not aged well. Yet another still might be his one and only directing gig on the film "Maximum Overdrive" (1986). While King has proven himself a decent screenwriter a few times over, and has even given a couple memorable turns on screen as an actor, he wasn't very well suited to the director's chair, at least according to the general reception of that movie. While some of us see the charm in "Maximum Overdrive,...

Nicole Kidman has worked with a lot of commendable talents from the entertainment industry to become one of the most top-notch actresses in all of Hollywood. Stanley Kubrickâs masterpiece A Clockwork Orange has polarized audiences since its 1971 release, as viewers wrestle with its unapologetic portrayal of violence, mind control, and moral decay. Today, itâs seen as a daring piece of cinema and a powerful social commentary. However, at the time, legendary film critic Roger Ebert saw something deeply troubling in it. Unlike Kubrickâs other works, which Ebert often praised, A Clockwork Orange struck him as little more than a âparanoid right-wing fantasy masquerading as an Orwellian warning.â He gave it two stars, baffling fans of Kubrick and shocking readers accustomed to his thoughtful critiques.
Ebertâs issues with the film began with its central character, Alex DeLarge. Alex, a teen delinquent who revels in âultraviolence,â is violent to a point few characters on film had ever been, committing brutal acts of assault and sadism, only to later become a victim of government reprogramming.

Nicole Kidman went viral earlier this year when she was awarded the AFI Life Achievement prize and used her acceptance speech to list every director sheâs worked with in her career. It was a remarkable roster of talent, from Stanley Kubrick to Jane Campion, Gus Van Sant, Yorgos Lanthimos, Sofia Coppola and more. But Kidman recently told Vanity Fair that her wish list of directors to work with remains quite long.
âIâve always said I want to work with [Martin] Scorsese, if he does a film with women,â Kidman said. âIâd love to work with Kathryn Bigelow. Iâd love to work with Spike Jones. Iâd love to work with PTA [Paul Thomas Anderson]. Iâve always wanted to work with Michael Haneke. In 1949, Alec Guinness dazzled critics and paying audiences alike by playing eight members, male and female, of the D'Ascoyne family in the deliciously dark comedy "Kind Hearts and Coronets." There weren't many actors alive cocky enough to attempt such a thing, let alone pull it off, so you'd think the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would go gaga for the actor's brazen feat and hand him the Best Actor Oscar before the ceremony began. Amazingly, he didn't even receive a nomination (though John Wayne snared his first for basically playing John Wayne in "Sands of Iwo Jima").
How did Guinness not even earn the honor of an Oscar nod? He made one critical mistake: he gave his bravura performance in a comedy.

Critics are possibly simultaneously the best and the worst thing to have ever happened to the world of art and literature. The deconstruction and analysis that goes into a piece of work takes away its creative individuality, instead substituting it with one personâs understanding of the subject.

After all, a genius auteur who could make such a timeless epic as Blade Runner come alive on the big screen only to hear it being dismissed as âunimportantâ would rightfully lose his mind.

When people think of Tom Hanks, they tend to call to mind a decent, stalwart American whose against-all-odds heroics inspire them to persevere when facing their own travails. They think of "Saving Private Ryan," "Apollo 13," even "Toy Story" -- some of Hanks' best films, and ones that could've easily starred classic Hollywood actor James Stewart had he been thriving during Hanks' heyday.
There is, of course, more to Tom Hanks than this. Indeed, it often seems like people have memory-holed the star's zany, adult-skewing comedies like "Bachelor Party," "The Man with One Red Shoe," and "Volunteers." And what of the noble box-office misfires "Punchline," "Joe Versus the Volcano," and "Charlie Wilson's War?" Hanks can play a loser or a cad when called upon, which, if you've a firm grasp of film history, is as Jimmy Stewart as it gets.

Nicolas Cage is one of our most impressive living actors, and a big part of that is because of his intense love of cinema. He's a true student of the craft, with an obsession for older films that has led him to an extensive knowledge of all the medium has to offer. Cage's passion for his projects has led to him becoming the subject of many memes, mostly using his most over-the-top performances, but the man really knows his stuff. So, when Rotten Tomatoes asked Cage for his five favorite films of all time, he came a little over-prepared, offering his top 13 favorite films instead. He said that he simply couldn't narrow it down to five because "there's different movies for different reasons in different lifetimes," which is the most Nicolas Cage thing he could have said.

The revival of Frasier on Paramount+ was met with high hopes and nostalgia-fueled excitement from longtime fans of the original. After all, Frasier was a sitcom that skillfully combined highbrow humor with relatable family dynamics, often taking sitcoms to new heights of cleverness.
However, despite this beloved foundation, Frasier 2 has struggled to recapture the charm that made the original a classic. Below, we explore five key reasons the reboot fell short.
1. Lack of Chemistry and Natural Interactions A still from Frasier | Credits: Paramount Domestic Television
One of the defining traits of the original Frasier was the nuanced chemistry among the cast. Viewers fondly remember scenes at CafĂ© Nervosa where characters would banter, seamlessly pausing to place an order, or watching Frasier and Niles squabble in ways that revealed their quirks. The new series, however, misses this magic. Fans on social media have noticed the rebootâs stilted atmosphere, describing scenes...

Breaking Bad has always been about a man suffering from the worldâs worst midlife crisis and deciding to break bad after being handed too many lemons in life. For Vince Gilligan, his own pensive experiences shaped the showâs core idea around which he then developed a cult-classic sleeper hit.
Years after its release on AMC, the whacky series became a pop culture phenomenon almost overnight when Netflix dragged it off the shelves and onto the streaming platform, giving it a second life. The fanfare around the series escalated to an all-time high and Breaking Bad became one of the biggest hits Netflix never made.

Vince Gilligan later admitted that his creation, although completely original in its conception, is not the first of its kind. And even though that statement might sound contradictory, Gilligan cited a 1952 Akira Kurosawa film as a reference that explains it all.

A sequel to the Oscar-winning âGodzilla Minus Oneâ has been greenlit and is in the works at Toho International, the Japanese studio announced on Friday, November 1.
Takashi Yamazaki, the writer and director of 2023âs âGodzillaâ film, will return to write and direct the follow-up. The âEmergency Announcementâ that came through via X said only âfurther details to follow.â
âGodzilla Minus One,â the Japanese prequel twist on the classic âGodzillaâ story, was one of the better âGodzillaâ movies in years. The film was a surprise international hit, grossing $115.8 million worldwide and performing even better once it finally hit PVOD and later Netflix.
The film though dealt with some unfortunate timing that limited its box office run stateside, as it opened within several months of Warner Bros. Stephen King is known for his works of horror, but every now and then, he strays outside of his established genre. His anthology book "Different Seasons" forgoes the supernatural for more grounded stories like "The Body" (adapted to the screen as "Stand By Me") and "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption". One of King's more recent non-horror books was "Billy Summers," a drama-thriller published in 2021. At times, "Billy Summers" reads as if King binged a bunch of episodes of the great HBO series "Barry" and said, "Let me try that, but without the jokes."
The story follows a Marine sniper-turned-hitman, the titular Billy Summers, who is ready to get out of the "killing people" business. He agrees to take one last job, and this job requires some prep work, including creating a cover story. While Tom Cruise is known for his action films, he has also experimented with his stardom. He has worked with acclaimed directors like Paul Thomas Anderson, Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and more. Cruise was also legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrickâs final leading man.
Kubrickâs final film Eyes Wide Shut was touted as an erotic thriller when it was first announced but the final film seemed to be a more surreal look into the world of secret societies, cults, and the elite. While the film polarized viewers, Cruise later defended the film saying that the expectations of the audience clouded their judgment.

At the dawn of the 1980s, Warner Bros. had two major in-house artists who could do just about anything they wanted. One was a movie star, the other a filmmaking genius, and they couldn't have been more different in aesthetic or temperament.
Clint Eastwood was a television star who found big-screen success by making Spaghetti Westerns in Europe with an upstart named Sergio Leone before becoming the avatar of the angry, Miranda rights-burdened American police officer as "Dirty Harry." Stanley Kubrick was a Bronx born-and-bred autodidact who found his love for filmmaking via photography; after a string of critical successes with "Paths of Glory," "Loilita" and "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb," he was hailed as a visionary for the groundbreaking "2001: A Space Odyssey," upon which he became renowned for his perfectionism and technical boundary pushing.

From 2020 to 2022, Bruce Willis cranked out a huge number of movies, most of them low-budget sci-fi/action films that all went straight-to-video, and usually playing brief, supporting roles. The many films were, by and large, panned by critics and mocked by baffled fans, all of whom wondered by Willis didn't appear to have much on-camera dialogue, or why he wasn't the lead character. In three years, he appeared in 22 movies.
In March of 2022, it was announced that Willis had been diagnosed with aphasia, a brain condition that affected his ability to speak and comprehend language. Many of the above fans expressed their deepest apologies, and even the Razzies, in a rare show of good taste, retraced Willis' Worst Actor nominations. Willis retired from acting because of his condition. In February 2023, Willis, now 69, was also diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, and he remains in the care of his family.

Although Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror film "The Shining" is frequently cited as one of the scariest films of all time, it's widely known that Stephen King â who wrote the 1977 novel on which it's based â hates it. Kubrick famously altered several details of King's book, and the author felt that the changes were arbitrary at best and insulting at worst. King wrote his story as the tale of an ordinary man who was gradually driven to madness. King expressed interest in gentler actors like Martin Sheen or Michael Moriarty for the role of Jack Torrance, feeling they would be sympathetic immediately. Kubrick, however, cast Jack Nicholson in the role, and King felt that Nicholson was already unstable from the jump. With Nicholson, it wasn't a tale of a sane man going insane, but an already-insane man cracking open.

Of course, when it came to the most explicit and kinkiest scenes in the movie, an intimacy coordinator, Lizzie Talbot, helped the guide the two. âWeâd have a discussion with the intimacy coordinator and then Nicole and I kind of did our own thing with it once we set the parameters of what we were both comfortable with,â Dickinson told me Friday at a âBabygirlâ screening at the London West Hollywood hotel. âThe intimacy coordinator is saying, âWhat are you comfortable with,...

Every filmmaker has their own unique vibe that usually shines through in any movie they make, and thatâs what helps them build a loyal fan base of cinephiles. Denis Villeneuve is no exception, especially when it comes to sci-fi, a genre he really nails as a director.

It turns out that this wasnât always the case. Even before he had the opportunity to direct Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve was hesitant about tackling a more technological or dystopian storyline. He recently mentioned that the film was a risky move for him in the film industry.

All October long, Cracked is catching up with some of the greatest writers in Simpsons history to discuss the most beloved segments from the âTreehouse of Horrorâ series. From the cursed monkeyâs paw to Krusto the Clown, weâre digging into the making of some real fan-favorites.
When it comes to The Simpsons, longtime showrunner Al Jean has seen just about everything. Which means that when heâs picking show favorites, the competition is fierce. Maybe never more so than among âTreehouse of Horrorâ episodes, as he was half of the creative team behind the second one (with his stalwart writing partner Mike Reiss), and heâs played a role in pretty much every installment since.
When I ask him and Reiss for a favorite, though, the answer comes pretty easy: Season 26âs âTreehouse of Horror Xxv.â
Per usual, it contained three segments, all written by Stephanie Gillis. The first was âSchool Is Hell,...

It's hard to be down in the dumps when the start of the work week brings the news that horror maestro and Stephen King aficionado Mike Flanagan has been tapped to adapt the King's monumental first novel, "Carrie," as a TV series. Flanagan has consistently knocked it out of the park with his adaptations of King's work, like turning the seemingly unadaptable "Gerald's Game" into one of the best King movies ever made and doing the impossible with "Doctor Sleep" by bridging King's novel with the imagery of Stanley Kubrick's take on "The Shining." As of publication, Flanagan is set to release "The Life of Chuck" in 2025 after a successful premiere out of the Toronto International Film Festival, and is working to crack the script for his take on "The Dark Tower." Flanagan is a magician when it comes to picking and choosing which aspects of King's books to...
