Promoting Our State, Our Stories Since 1828
Established in 1828, the Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) is Michigan's oldest cultural organization and helps connect Michigan’s past to its residents and organizations through programs and events, publications, awards, workshops, networking opportunities, and support for local history organizations. HSM is a member-supported educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and receives zero state-appropriated funding.

Supporting the Historical Society of Michigan
The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) is a nongovernmental, nonprofit with a unique Michigan history education mission, and is not part of Michigan’s state government. Although the state Legislature has designated HSM the state’s official historical society, that role does not come with annual appropriations in the state budget. We rely on friends, members, and donors to support an ever-increasing amount of Michigan history programming.
