Well, congrats on that "baby on the way" thing, Kyle! You must be very excited.

I'm Melki. I've been roaming the halls of Goodreads since April. I read from a vast array of genres, but have always had a soft spot for humorous writing. Here's my profile, if you want to know more:
http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/52...

Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Groan! I feel a strange disturbance in the force...

No...it's just Bob.

raya (a little mango) (airtwit) | 14 comments Hi, my name is Raya. This November I'll be marked with the legal drinking age, but a nice, quiet time with a couple of books (or getting my Fringe Friday on) interests me far more. Laurie Notaro is responsible for my recent craving of humorous books, so I'm on the hunt.

message 5: by Hazel (last edited Oct 26, 2011 03:26AM) (new)

Hazel | 309 comments Hi, my name is Hazel, and its been 3 years since I had any alcohol... (hey, if we can't start with a cliche, where would we be? :P )

I have a daughter, who is a pain in the.... the apple of my eye. Other than that, errm, reading, painting, drawing and knitting, oh and roleplay and larp, thats pretty much me. Its quite sad that I can condense myself down to a short couple of sentences...

Raya, if you haven't tried Terry Pratchett yet, his books are great, and other humorous writers that I like: Tom Holt and Robert Rankin. I recommend all 3.

I haven't read Pratchett yet, but he's been recommended to me so many times that I've lost count. I plan to check out one of his Discworld books soon-ish. I'll write down the other two on my list, thanks!

Welcome Hazel and Raya and Lynne - who hasn't commented yet, but I know she's joined. (Tiny pink dust bunnies told me so...)

Happy wishes to you Raya, on you upcoming birthday.
I've never regretted an evening spent in the company of books.

Hazel - how old is your, er...apple? I'd love to hear more about your larp activies. (Yes, I admit - I had to ask my teenager what the hell that was!)

message 8: by Robert (new)

Robert (bobhe) Ok answers for thick Englishman. What is legal drinking age where you live? What is a larp?what is fringe Friday?
It's less than 30 hours since I had alcohol. BUT only 3 hours before down pub. With legitimate excuse as need sort New Years Eve out as now Not WORKING
Think gonna like this group

message 9: by Melki (new)

Melki | 3539 comments Mod
I think it's obvious that it's LESS than 30 hours since you've had alcohol, Bob.

Drinking age in US is 21. Larp is Live Action Role Playing (I'll let Hazel fill us in on the details.) and Fringe is a cool sci-fi tv show that airs on Friday nights. I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

message 10: by Hazel (new)

Hazel | 309 comments LARP, as melki said, stands for Live Action Roleplay. Basically, its like dungeons and dragons, but instead of sitting around rolling dice, you get dressed up, and go out and actually act out the game. My other half and I have been writing a new game, that we're planning on playtesting as soon as we get some woodland we can use.

Melki, my daughter turns 3 in a couple of weeks.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) Hi I am Lynne from Dorset in the UK. Sorry Melki I went out to a concert tonight and didn't get to read all the posts till now - gone midnight here in the UK.

I have 2 grown up kids both in Wales - north and south...no cheeky comment please Bob!

I am a booklover and I have over 1100 to be read and all here in my library - hence 'The Book Squirrel' and its a play on my surname too - Hazell....nuts....squirrel...oh never mind shut up Lynne and go to bed. It is 39 hours since I had a decent nights sleep....Night Bless and Bedbugs all!

Welcome Christopher! It's good to have you here.

Daniel Pinkwater is currently offering his novel, "Bushman Lives", serialized online. A new chapter appears every Monday. It's been a fun read, so far. Here is the link:

Christopher Bunn Wow! Thanks, Melki. I've been a fan of Pinkwater for decades. I'm off to catch up on the story.

(next day)...hilarious! Pinkwater still has the old charm. Thanks again for tipping me off.

Yup, that's it. I re-watched season one over the summer and had fun with spot-the-observer. Great show, or at least I think so. (;

Sam (ecowitch) | 154 comments Hiya all, I'm Sam and have been dragged here on pain of death by Melki (I'm sure the threat was there you know). I'm an ecologist (glorified tree hugger, or eco-freak as my boss refers to us as) living and reading in Cardiff, South Wales (watch it Bob!). I have an ever so minor book obsession (definitely no where near Lynne's anyway) and thanks to GR I've expanded my reading repertoire vastly (although me and chick lit still do NOT get on).

Look forward to harassing...I mean getting to know you all :-D

message 25: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry (pezski) | 9 comments hey guys

another new recruit signing in! I'm in Sheffield in the UK, and like to read most anything with print on it. I think it's a rare book that can get by without some humour in it (I think John Steinbeck could've done with a joke or two...) but also rather like the Pratchett quote about funny not being the opposite of serious. Case in point being Towing Jehovah, the most recent book I've read that can safely be shelved under humour. I seem to be reading a lot of history at the moment. The Roman Republic is a hoot.

Also good to see more Fringe fans here! I really must start watching the current series - so no spoilers, please! My excuse is that a friend recently introduced me to Community, and I've been ODing on that.

message 26: by John (new)

John Martin (httpgoodreadscomjohn_martin) | 12 comments Hi,
Excuse this impostor. I cannot deny it: I am an Aussie. But there are mitigating circumstances for me being here. a) I did live in the UK for a year or two; b) I used to have a British passport because I had dual nationality owing to my father being born and raised in Workington, Cumbria, and; c) my new satirical novel Major B S: A Top-Secret Mission features two Londoners and one Yorkshireman in a deal of strife near Canberra, Australia's capital city.

As well as being a writer, I'm an avid reader and always on the lookout for funny reads.
You can find more about me at http://www.goodreads.com/httpgoodread...

I'm another bookworm, a Canadian though, who has read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide, #1) by Douglas Adams ...ever heard of it? Haha. Seems to be on every list of 'funny' books ever?

Oh, and I wasn't one of the lucky members who were dragged here by Melki...what is up with that?

message 37: by Jon (new)

Jon Finkel | 22 comments Cross continental geography humor is the best... I'm actually from Boston, which is home to the most important place in New England: Fenway Park.

message 38: by Melki (new)

Melki | 3539 comments Mod
I like that it's still called Fenway, instead of "Pomwonderful Oscar Meyer T. Rowe Price Park". It's got to be one of the few ballparks left in the US that still has its original name, doesn't it?

Yeah - just Googled it - it is. But I have a new favorite now - Petco Park in San Diego. Gives me visions of players crossing home plate and being tossed rawhide and Snausages.

message 39: by Jon (new)

Jon Finkel | 22 comments Actually, if you like the idea of sausages at the game, then you would enjoy Miller Park in Milwaukee, where men dress up in 8 foot tall bratwurst, sausage, and kielbasa outfits and race around the diamond for the fans.

Oh, they do that in Pittsburgh too! I believe there was a mild scandal at PNC Park a few years ago, when one of the players tripped a costumed pierogi.

message 41: by Jon (new)

Jon Finkel | 22 comments Haven't been to PNC park yet. It's on my list... I've been waiting for the Sox to play there in interleague play... I remember when the player took out the pierogi... I don't know why the idea of racing meat has to be limited to tubed meats... I would think Philly fans would enjoy a Cheesesteak Chase. Or maybe a Meatloaf Marathon.

I love everything (or almost everything) britcom throws at me and I believe Sir Terry Pratchet should be more than just knighted. :) So, if you have know any type of books (or tv series) that match my likings feel free to enlighten me.

Also be sure to check out my short stories collection Working for heat :)
