Yes, this challenge instead of just getting an extra 10 bonus points just for reading a certain number of books in this category --- now you have to earn the bonuses. :-)
But on the upside, the bonuses can start with the first book read for Spring Cleaning.
Here's the excerpt from Sam's explanation on how to earn the bonus points. It's in the "How to Play Spring Cleaning" topic.
--------------
Each task is worth 15 points; however, you can receive bonus points in two different ways:
1) Read a book written prior to 1980, receive 5 bonus points.
2) Read a book with more than 500 pages, receive 5 bonus points.
A bonus of 150 points will be rewarded for anyone who completes all of the "Spring Cleaning" tasks.

Hi Jackie: Either the book you linked here -- or the publication date shown is incorrect. The book "Charade" that you added in your post was published in 1994. If that's the correct book, it's not eligible for Oldies Style points.

Jackie --- if you could include the book you read for Task 10.8, that would be great.

Task 15.8 Spring-Cleaning
Biography Rutherford B. Hayes by Hans L. Trefousse
+15 pts - Task
Grand Total - 55 pts
Guess what? What happened in the election of 2000 had already happened in 1876! There was Rep gov running against a Dem and in the end it first was thought Tilden won, then as more votes came in, it wasn't sure. Dem won pop vote and Rep seemed to have more electoral but Florida was the deciding factor. Many felt the minorites' votes weren't counted and disregarded so they called a re-count but finally after weeks of uncertainy a Supreme Court judge (repub) ruled that the Republican governor had won,
Digging in history I'm always amazed about how we've been through this before but no one remembers so we keep repeating the same mistakes. Like they could have made a protocol at that time how it would be handled. All during his term the New York Sun called him RutherFRAUD Hayes because they thought he stole the election. wow!

Spring Cleaning: Task 15.4
Historical Fiction...I am categorizing this book as thus because even though it is based on her relative's experiences, she says that many of the events are fictionalized based on drawings, etc. that she had. If I need to change it to "biography" just let me know.
I read What World is Left by Monique Polak (Lexile 740) for 15 points.

However, since you couldn't know how I was going to count pages & I don't want to discourage you from reading my favorite playwright, I am accepting the points claimed.
