[book:The Years with Laura Diaz|182000
This work is a sprawling, unwieldy attempt to portray the politics of most of the twentieth century of Mexico using a character's life as its armature. The novel is not shy about presenting its grand vision. I nearly stopped reading it but for some reason, soldiered on. For someone, like myself, with little knowledge of Mexican politics/history, there was a huge cast of characters which I found difficult to keep track of. The frustrating aspect of this work is that there is a great novel contained in it but for it to be so, it would have needed some serious editing. Aside from the cast of characters, there were many single sentences that ran over 100 words. Having just completed reading this work, I feel a sense of accomplishment because it is over 500 pages but not a sense of satisfaction.

As one who, while trying to convey a specific ideation, has been known to include an astronomical number of words, despite vigorous self-editing, i must admit to wondering how one would begin to parse (which was called "diagraming" when i was in elementary school) my ditties of a mere half-hundred words, must wonder if you, Rachel, tried to parse Diaz's hundred word+ sentences?
Seriously, sometime when i read those long lines, i wonder if authors realize what they have done and how distracting that can be. I've not tried to parse the entire sentence but have looked at them to see the noun-verb combo.
You are to be commended for your terrific start, of course, but staying the course on this one sounds daunting and to be applauded. Well accomplished!

Thanks for the encouragement. Don't you think it would be an editor's job to say something to the author? Plus there were many of those ultra long sentences. Many because it was originally written in Spanish, maybe the language difference? I prefer more to the point narrative.

Over a decade ago one of this group's regular contributors talked about the role of editors in this new world. She said that even before the Internet, publishers were hiring fewer editors and that their jobs were more assuring deadlines were met than actually editing what was written. Ultimately, she left the industry because she could no longer tolerate the lowered standards. I pass that along, just in case that is a factor here.
You make an excellent point about translating books, though. It would seem easy to go overboard with the prose in attempting to relay what the author's original words meant. Good point. I guess this is why they now have awards for translators.

Authors can't count on editors to correct mistakes any longer. Only the book's expected to be bestsellers even make it to an editor. Authors can hire an independent editor, but they are very expensive.

So editorial is going the way of the dodo? Plus I was listening to something the other day that said a huge new thing is self publishing.
Yes, self-publishing guarantees your book will be published. Then, i imagine you may turn to some other professional to get your book read by people who will like & promote it. And on. Those i know who have self-published perform all the other work themselves--booking readings, advertising and give aways. It often engenders interest because they know their audience.

Wouldn't you think it should be just the opposite? Give the newcomers the editors and let the Big Money authors pay for an independent editor. Perhaps they are so full of certainty that they wouldn't do so? I don't know.
My daughter is a copy editor and she has basically acted as an editor for books for two authors. So, this is another direction they can take. Many will only correct the language usage but others will extend their work to include organization.
Btw, when my daughter wrote her book, her editor changed firms, leaving my kid high & dry. Her editor? Herself. :-) And that was Simon & Schuster!

Mr. Emerson's Wife
Yes, Mr. Emerson's Wife is the book in question. As I said, I do not know much about him but as presented in the book, I did not find him a likable or sympathetic character.

That's interesting, Rachel. I would have thought he would have been. I don't know why I thought that, though.

Same here, Kiki. Of course living with someone and admiring his/her life are quite different things. :-)

Agreed. I am definitely going to read something else by him. Also, I started listening to The Passenger by Cormac McCArthy and almost gave up on it. But I listened on and I am getting more involved in it. The first chapter I could not for the life of me figure out what was going on.
It's frustrating to begin a new book, only to become befuddled by the opening chapter. I don't recall ever quitting after that, but it's an awful first impression and sometimes i end up struggling with the remainder of the book, due to that start. McCarthy's way with words will often overcome such an unfortunate start, fortunately.
I must tell you that I am loving this Challenge because I am reading books that I probably would not have picked just because. For example The Passenger and also I am reading The Good Lord Bird which I actually started a long time ago and said to myself, not interested and the Challenge made me pick it up again and now I am loving it.
I'm happy to hear that, Rachel. I feel the same way. It gets me reading outside of my comfort zone. Happily, I found many good books in that outer zone !
I agree.
Last year i read The Good Lord Bird for Historical Fiction. From there, i read his memoir, The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother, which i really, really liked. I hope to read more James McBride this year, too.

I LOVED The Color of Water. It was for a book group quite some time ago. Great book which I highly recommend for anyone who has not read it.

I learned much from it, Rachel. And had a better understanding of the author, of course, from learning about his family. His mother was an outstanding woman, almost more so in later life. She had a history to tell.
Kiki, my aunt liked Deacon King Kong best, too. She was the one to encourage me to read McBride in the first place.
