Grimdark is a common name for it, yes. I have a shelf of it if you're interested with ratings and reviews for most I believe.

My top suggestion would be Malazan Fallen

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments Second Malazan. Also The Lies of Locke Lamora.

Abercrombie's Twitter handle is @LordGrimdark, so that answers that. :p
According to a blog post I read a while back he doesn't really like the term, because a lot of people use it dismissively, but since people insist on naming him a trendsetter in the "genre" he thought he might as well make it his own.

Mpauli Malazan is great and very grimdark. Although it's not the easiest series to get into.

Mark Lawrence would be another example. His series starts with Prince of Thorns.

Christopher Preiman | 347 comments Brent Weeks is another good one to look at

Travis (the_hero_of_canton) R. Scott Bakker's "Prince of Nothing"

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 1081 comments The Black Company by Glen Cook, which in my opinion is the original gritty fantasy series.

Michael Pang (bookbandit) | 3 comments I agree with the Black Company series. I would also add the Demon Cycle series by Peter Brett.

Christopher Preiman | 347 comments Oh i loved heroes die. Gritty fantasy with just a touch of science fiction for flavor.

Joseph | 2431 comments Scourge of the Betrayer by Jeff Salyards also definitely fits the bill.

Nils Krebber | 208 comments Only trouble I can see with the grimdark label is that it is commonly attributed in a derogative way to works like Warhammer 40k or Judge Dredd. In these works, the grim and darkness is simply way over the top into parody land, that's why I can understand Mr. Abercrombie doesn't like the tag very much.

James (beastbot) | 35 comments Check out Blood song by Anthony Ryan best one I've picked up recnetly

message 20: by Ross (new)

Ross I'm debating giving Brent Weeks' Night Angel a shot, but I have to admit it looks a bit cheesy. Is it good or does it read like a Forgotten Realms book? Also, R. Scott Bakker get's my vote for top notch grimdark.

Personally I enjoyed The Way of Shadows, but thought each following book got worse. Many seem to enjoy the whole trilogy though.
