Long Shot (Hoops, #1)

Let me first say, this is not the fluffy contemporary sports romance you might be expecting. This book was BRUTAL. If you have triggers in general about domestic/physical/sexual/emotional abuse, then consider yourself warned to not read this book because this book does not pull any punches AT ALL. I can't emphasize this enough, and I am not one to really give trigger warnings often but this book absolutely necessitates it.
Given that absolutely serious disclaimer about abuse - this book shook me up. I will say in the very beginning of the book when August and Iris meet, it's actually kind of boring to the point that I almost put this book down. And yet I am *so glad* I did not put this book down. Because shortly afterward it took a serious turn for the better (though for the worse for what the characters go through). I couldn't put it down! I don't want to give anything away, but just know that this is a romance story, but it is definitely about going through hell at first.
Iris is a smart woman who is put in an impossible situation and does the best to deal with the hand she has been dealt. August is perhaps written too much as a saint but given how dark this book gets at times, his endless light is very much needed so I will forgive the author for his sometimes unrealistic perfection. Oh and he is perhaps a little too much into giving oral sex, and I am not one to shy away from smexy times in books but even I was like "ok buddy calm down with that" LOL! An extended epilogue would have been nice considering everything that they go through, but the book did end on a note that I enjoyed. This book will absolutely stick with me.
And for those of you who have read this book already and liked it, I would recommend Kane's Hell (ignore the absolutely terrible title and cover, it's a much more serious book than it looks and is not a paranormal romance at all).

SOLD, Holly ;) I have been wanting to read this for sometime and your fantastic review convinced me move it way up!! 😊💜
LOL my eyes rolled heavenward when they got into that closet and he did his thing. I was like jeez Louise Kennedy Ryan we get it he's a giver!
Great review! I'm always on the lookout for interesting romances. I'll give a try when my mood is up for something like this :]
Great review Holly, glad you enjoyed this.
I loved this author's Grip series, but I just can't read this one.
Which is a shame because I know Ryan is a great writer, but I just can't read about the abuse.
I also kind of can't forgive the author for promoting this as a fluffy sports romance, I almost got it, but I'm glad I waited for the early reviews....

Great review!!! I read so much that only a few stories and characters each year stuck with me - but this one is still haunting!!! I’ll have to check out your rec!!!!
Great review. Given your trigger warning, I'll probably avoid this, but I'm glad to know it was really good! I'm kind of intrigued by an ambitious-sounding (rather than fluffy) romance.

Hope you enjoy it! (Well, as much as you can for books like this where upsetting things happen)

Yeah you definitely have to be in a certain mood for this kind of book, definitely not the mood for a light romance!

Yeah like this could be very upsetting for people. Hell, it was upsetting for me and I have no personal/friend/family history that would make me sensitive to this subject. It was rough. I will have to look into her other series, thanks for the rec!

Haunting is definitely the right word! I hope you like Kane's Hell if you get to it :)

Ambitious/traumatic. So yeah I would maybe avoid if you even think you should avoid, because it's not an easy read. I applaud her realistic take on the subject, but at the same time....
