The spicy tale of Odysseus' protracted and wandering return to Ithaca and his wife Penelope after the events of the Iliad. I was surprised to find the epic so accessible. Some of the violent scenes are very unpleasant and superfluous, but some passages and ideas are luminous and it is easy to see why Homer was so beloved and the work has survived.

When I visited Ithaca it was nice to know the story!
